Michelangelo: The Story of a Sculptor
He is revered as one of the greatest artists of all time. For centuries he has typified the perfect artistic genius. His greatest legacy is the surviving works that we can see today - The Sistene Chapel, the Statue of david, the Pieta. Yet, behind the artworks lies a complex and stubborn man. In this week’s Biographics, we go beyond the facade to discover the real Michelangelo.

The Renaissance - The Age of Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci (1/2) | DW Documentary
Beginning at the end of the 14th Century, the Renaissance created a new type of man, triggering economic, scientific, technical, religious, social and cultural developments that are unique in history.
Never before have culture, economics and science developed so rapidly within one century as during the Renaissance. But what was the catalyst for it, what is the "Renaissance factor"? The Renaissance is an epoch unique in human history: Never before have art, culture, economics and science developed so rapidly within a single century. We search for the "Renaissance factor", that combination of influences that triggered a pivotal period in history. It is a journey through time from Ancient Rome to the Crusades and the Black Death in the 14th century, events that defined the developments of t...

Michelangelo - A Revolution in Art | Documentary
At the young age of 23, Michelangelo broke all traditions and created his first masterpiece - the Pietà, of Mary cradling the body of Jesus Christ after his death, who looks as if he was sleeping peacefully.
Michelangelo’s David sculpture, carved from a 7-metre-high block of marble, also broke taboos of its time - an anatomically perfect body representing the freedom and sovereignty of the spirit. Michelangelo’s frescoes are no less monumental than his sculptures.
When Michelangelo was offered the job of decorating the arched ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, he had never painted a fresco before. Michelangelo locked himself in the Sistine Chapel for four years and suffered terrible hardships while working day and night. The result was a work the likes of which had never been seen before: T...

The many meanings of Michelangelo's Statue of David - James Earle
View full lesson: http://ed.ted.com/lessons/the-many-meanings-of-michelangelo-s-statue-of-david-james-earle
We typically experience classic works of art in a museum, stripped of their original contexts, but that serene setting can belie a tumultuous history. Take Michelangelo's statue of David: devised as a religious symbol, adopted as a political emblem, and later iconized for its aesthetic beauty. James Earle walks us through the statue's journey, to show how art gains layers of meaning over time.
Lesson by James Earle, animation by Avi Ofer.

Michelangelo's David gets a dusting
Michelangelo’s David, the world most famous sculpture, got a cleaning on Monday as a restorer with a special vacuum cleaner, a brush and a soft cloth worked over every centimeter of his body from the top of his head to his toenails.
Michelangelo Buonarroti sculpted the giant marble “David” between 1501-1504 after being commissioned by the cathedral of Florence.
The statue, which measures more than 5 meters (5.4 yards) high and weighs 5 tons, is considered the height of Renaissance art that draws 1.7 million visitors each year to Florence’s Galleria dell’Accademia.

It is a journey through time from Ancient Rome to the Crusades and the Black Death in the 14th century, events that defined the developments of the Renaissance. We travel with Michelangelo to the major construction site that was to become St. Peter’s Basilica, to the banking houses of the Medicis and the workshop of Johannes Gutenberg. We examine some of the many innovations of the Renaissance such as linear perspective, the printing press and double-entry bookkeeping. We ask what these achievements mean to us today and how - almost half a millennium later - we continue to benefit from the "Renaissance factor." And we delve deeper with the help of spectacular reenactments and our "special investigators" - modern-day trendsetters, scientists, business tycoons, fashion designers and artists.
