Metropolitan Police is a generic title for the municipal police force for a major metropolitan area, and it may be part of the official title of the force. They provide all general police services and tend to be headed by a chief called a Commissioner or Sheriff.
In the United States, metropolitan police agencies have often been formed through mergers between several local police agencies formerly holding jurisdiction within neighboring communities within a metropolitan area or county, such as several local police departments and possibly the county sheriff's office.
Typically, such communities have experienced recent population growth and urban sprawl, which causes the area to more closely resemble and function as one single conurbation. Under these circumstances, a single law enforcement agency with a unified command, jurisdiction and support structure comes to be seen as more appropriate and efficient.
A related concept exists in some American counties in which county sheriffs' offices contract with some (though not necessarily all) local cities or towns within their counties to provide all law enforcement services in those municipalities in lieu of a separate city or town police force.
Metropolitan Police Department of the District of Columbia
The Metropolitan Police Department of the District of Columbia, abbreviated as the Metropolitan Police of the District of Columbia (MPDC), or in general simply called the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD), and in the U.S. and D.C. codes referred to as the Metropolitan Police force, is the primary law enforcement agency of Washington, D.C. The MPD has a unique role among law enforcement in the United States in that it serves as a local police department, with county, state and federal responsibilities, and is under a municipal government but operates under federal authority.
A police force is a constituted body of persons empowered by the state to enforce the law, protect property, and limit civil disorder. Their powers include the legitimized use of force. The term is most commonly associated with police services of a sovereign state that are authorized to exercise the police power of that state within a defined legal or territorial area of responsibility. Police forces are often defined as being separate from military or other organizations involved in the defense of the state against foreign aggressors; however, gendarmerie are military units charged with civil policing.
Law enforcement, however, constitutes only part of policing activity. Policing has included an array of activities in different situations, but the predominant ones are concerned with the preservation of order. In some societies, in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, these developed within the context of maintaining the class system and the protection of private property. Many police forces suffer from police corruption to a greater or lesser degree. The police force is usually a public sector service, meaning they are paid through taxes.
As of October 2011, the Met employed 48,661 full-time personnel. This included 31,478 sworn police officers, 13,350 non-police staff, and 3,831 non-sworn police community support officers. This number excludes the 5,479 Special Constables, who work part-time (a minimum of 16 hours a month) and who have the same powers and uniform as their regular colleagues. This makes the Metropolitan Police the largest police force in the United Kingdom by a significant margin, and one of the biggest in the world.
The Metropolitan Police is the police force under the authority of the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires. The force was created in 2010 and is composed of 1,850 officers, and is planned to expand to 16,000. Security in the city is concurrently the responsibility of the Metropolitan Police and the Argentine Federal Police.
This is a character guide to the radio drama, film, manga and anime works Kerberos saga (ケルベロス・サーガ, keruberosu saga). Characters are sorted by organizations or groups according to the original works. The English adaptation equivalents are mentioned when available.
Shutoken chian keisatsu kikoh: often shortened to Shutokei (首都警) is the third Japanese armed forces together with the Self-Defense Force and the Self-Police. "Metropolitan Police" and its initials "M.P." are used as official translation in the English-language written synopsis available in all Kerberos Panzer Cop Japanese editions - as well as in the licensed versions published in Asia in the 2000s. The original version of Jin-Roh, released in Europe one year prior to Japan, translates the synopsis term as "POSEM" (contraction of "POlice de SÉcurité Métropolitaine"), French for "Metropolitan Security Police". However the English language anime version kept the manga's 1994 English adaptation - Hellhounds - with "CAPO" (for "CApital POlice") rather than "Metropolitan Security Police". Also Hauptstadtpolizei (shortened to Polizei), the German term for "Capital Police", is used as an additional emblem on the M.P.'s (首都警) aerial reconnaissance helicopter Fa-330, while it was not featured in the manga version.
