The ‘flying’ vehicles of Meru County | Miraa Vehicles
Though it is well known that miraa drivers flout crucial traffic rules and ignore the common sense of decency on the roads, not many miraa users are willing to pull down their tower of cards to lop their tall poppies.
Instead, they discuss speeding by miraa drivers as if in admiration of the neck breaking speeds that leave drivers using the Maua-Meru-Nanyuki-Nairobi Roads shaken almost to death.
It’s about 7pm and it’s a miraa pick hour. Maua Town is a beehive of activity as miraa dealers flock pick and drop points near the market.

Is Meru National Park the Most Secretive Park in Kenya?
Meru National Park covers 1800km2 and is the core of an ecosystem that includes Kora, Bisandi, Kitui and Rahole National Reserves, an additional 5000+km2 of pure wilderness. It is a lot less busy than some of Kenya’s more popular parks and has an unspoilt feel.

WHO ARE THE MERU PEOPLE ? 10 Surprising Facts ; Curvy Women etc
#bantu #meru #kenya
This video is about the Meru people of Central Kenya. The Meru are one of the largest ethnic groups in Kenya, with a population of over 2 million people. Their home region of Meru and Tharaka Nithi counties lies on the fertile lands of the north and eastern slopes of Mount Kenya in the former Eastern Province. Their region is the farthest the Bantu expansion has ever reached.
It is believed that they are descendants of the Bantu-speaking groups that migrated southward from West Central Africa, particularly Cameroon. The Bantu expansion brought them initially to the Kenyan coast, from where further migration inward brought them to the highlands of Mount Kenya.
The slopes of Mount Kenya, where the Meru live, are some of the most beautiful and fertile lands in Africa. The...

Khat or qat (Amharic: ጫት ch’at; Oromo: Jimaa, Somali: qaad, khaad or khat, Arabic: القات al-qāt) is a flowering plant native to the East and West Hararghe zones of Ethiopia. Khat contains the alkaloid cathinone, a stimulant, which is said to cause excitement, loss of appetite, and euphoria. Among communities from the areas where the plant is native, khat chewing has a history as a social custom dating back thousands of years analogous to the use of coca leaves in South America and betel nut in Asia.
The khat plant is known by a variety of names, such as qat and gat in Yemen, qaat and jaad in Somalia, and chat in Ethiopia. It is also known as jimaa in the Oromo language, mayirungi in Luganda, and as miraa in Kenya. In the African Great Lakes region, where Catha edulis is in some areas cultivated, it is known as miraa, muhulo and muirungi
The World Health Organization (WHO) classified it in 1980 as a drug of abuse that can produce psychic dependence,[3] although the WHO does not consider khat addiction to be a serious problem
Khat has been grown for use as a stimulant for centuries in the Horn of Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. There, chewing khat predates the use of coffee and is used in a similar social context. Its fresh leaves and tops are chewed or, less frequently, dried and consumed as tea, to achieve a state of euphoria and stimulation. The leaves or the soft part of the stem can be chewed with either chewing gum or fried peanuts to make it easier to chew.
In Uganda, it is grown in the central region, especially in Kasenge (Wakiso), Butambala District, Mabira Forest, and in some parts of the western region of the country.[2] In Kenya, it is grown in Meru County.
Meru is a town in eastern Kenya. It is the headquarters of Meru County and the seventh-largest urban center in the country. Meru forms a municipal council with a population of 240,900 residents Meru town is the Commercial capital of Northern and Eastern Kenya. It hosts a Central Bank of Kenya’s Currency Centre serving the North Eastern Half of Kenya. Meru has 22 bank branches. while several micro-finance institutions are also available. Mwalimu Cooperative Savings & Credit Society Limited, (Mwalimu Sacco), the largest Sacco in Kenya, maintains a branch in Meru. The town is the business and agricultural center for north-eastern Kenya. Meru County is one of the 47 counties of Kenya, located in the former Eastern Province. It borders Isiolo County to the North, Tharaka/Nithi County to the East, Nyeri County to the South West and Laikipia County to the West. It covers a total area of 7,006 Km2 out of which part of it 972.3Km2 is gazetted as forest. It has a population of 1.55 million people. Meru County is the home of the Ngaa people (Meru), who are related to other ethnicities living around the Mount Kenya region: the Kikuyu, Embu people and to some extent the Kamba people Also, peoples from the east coast of Kenya, along the Indian Ocean, like the Bajuni, Swahili, Mijikenda, and further inland, the Taita, Taveta and westwards to the Lake Victoria coast, the Kisii and Maragoli as well as other Luhya people, are all related to the Meru.

The Park was made famous in the 1960s by Joy and George Adamson, who reintroduced their beloved lioness “Elsa” into the wild at the Park. They wrote a book about their experience which was made into a feature film “Born Free”.
Meru National Park is particularly scenic. The Tana River on its southern boundary is the largest waterway in Kenya, and there are several small streams that run through the park. Beautiful doum palms and baobab trees are silhouetted against the sky, and the red soil makes a striking background for arid-adapted animals.
The Park also offers good overall wildlife viewing and is home to the Big 5. Elephants are particularly common. Big cat sightings are hit-and-miss. There is a 100+ strong herd of white and black rhinos in the drive-in Rhino Sanctuary, although the vegetation is extremely thick. Hippos and Nile crocodiles are common along the Tana River.

The Meru region is covered with trees and is indeed breathtakingly beautiful. Within the Meru region, you will find forests, rivers, the second highest mountain in Africa, Mount Kenya, lush rolling wheat farms, beautiful green tea plantations, and serene rural landscapes full of warm, hospitable people. The capital city of Meru is Meru Town, a bustling, beautiful city that is one of Kenya’s fastest-growing cities. Due to its location on the slopes of Mount Kenya , the city enjoys a relatively temperate and cool climate that is a joy to experience.
