Mbarara University of Science & Technology (MUST), commonly known as Mbarara University, is a public university in Uganda. Mbarara University commenced student intake and instruction in 1989. It is one of the eight public universities and degree-awarding institutions in the country. MUST is accredited by the Uganda National Council for Higher Education.
Location
The university has two campuses:
The Mbarara Campus is in the town of Mbarara, on the Mbarara-Kabale Highway, approximately 266 kilometres (165mi) southwest of Kampala, Uganda's capital and largest city. The coordinates of the university campus are 00 37 01S, 30 39 24E (Latitude:-0.6170; Longitude:30.6565).
The Kihumuro Campus is in the suburb of Kihumuro, approximately 7 kilometres (4.3mi), by road, west of Mbarara's central business district along the Mbarara-Bushenyi Road. The campus sits on 139 hectares (340 acres) of land, away from city noise. Once construction is completed, it will house all university faculties and institutes except the College of Health Sciences, which will remain at the Mbarara Campus. The Uganda government has spent USh5 billion (approx. US$2 million) of its own money on the construction. It has also secured a US$12 million loan from the African Development Bank to move the construction along.
Mbarara is a town in the Western Region of Uganda. It is the main municipal, administrative, and commercial center of Mbarara District and the site of the district headquarters.
Location
Mbarara is about 290 kilometres (180mi), by road, southwest of Kampala, Uganda's capital and largest city. Mbarara is an important transport hub, lying west of Masaka on the road to Kabale, near Lake Mburo National Park. The coordinates of the Mbarara central business district are 00 36 48S, 30 39 30E (Latitude:-0.6132; Longitude:30.6582).
Population
In 2002, the national census estimated the population of the town at 69,400. The Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) estimated the population at 82,000 in 2010. In 2011, UBOS estimated the mid-year populatiation at 83,700. In August 2014, the national population census put the population at 195,013.
History
MBARARA GENESIS Early Travellers in Ankole and the Founding of Mbarara by an African, Asian and European Initiative. by David Weekes, (2014) ISBN 9780956550149 describes its founding in 1899 on an old royal site which had been abandoned.

Infrastructure in Western Uganda - USMID registers progress in Mbarara, Kabale and Ntungamo
Leaders of Ntungamo, Kabale and Mbarara are requesting for the continuation of the Uganda Support to Municipal Infrastructure Development Projects.
This follows the end of the 10 yrs old Municipal Infrastructure development program (USMID), that closed June 30, 2024.
The project has provided for great progress in many urban areas through urban infrastructure, waste management, capacity building, institutional strengthening among others.
The Mayor for Mbarara City, Robert Mugabe Kakyebezi says the programme has incorporated pedestrian walkways and reduced potholes making the city more beautiful.
