The Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems
The Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems is a world leading research institution in the field of AI, Machine Learning and Robotics. Our goal is to understand and investigate the fundamental problem of Perception, Action and Learning, asking the question: How are intelligent systems able to operate autonomously in, and adapt to, complex, changing environments? We use nature’s blueprint to design state-of-the-art artificially intelligent systems. They range from life-like avatars to humanoid robots with a sense of touch, to algorithms that detect patterns in huge datasets. Find out more here: www.is.mpg.de

Welcome to our Institute
At the Max Planck Institute for Biology of Ageing we dedicate our research to deciphering the mystery of growing old: Why do organisms age at all? How can we influence our ageing and lifespan? And how do we ensure that our bodies remain fit and healthy as we grow older?
Over 300 employees from more than 35 nations help to answer these basic questions. Four departments focus the institute’s research on nutrition and signalling pathways, molecular genetics of ageing, mitochondrial function, and brain epigenetics. In addition, up to twelve research groups cover all important facets of ageing research: cell growth control, autophagy, genome stability and DNA repair, chromatin processing, immune system and infection, evolution, and protein homeostasis.
Our eight core facilities offer all res...

Max Planck Institute of Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics
The mission of the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Cell Biology and Geneticsis is to discover the molecular and cellular principles by which cells form tissues. To achieve that mission they understand that research programs must span across all the biological scales; from molecular assemblies to organelles, cells, tissues, organs, and organisms. They harness the knowledge and power of model organisms and incorporate new cellular models, in particular human organoid models that several groups in the institute have pioneered over the years from gastrointestinal organs like liver and pancreas, to brain, trunk and placenta development.

Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems & IMPRS-IS
The Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems- or MPI-IS, for short - is one of currently 86 institutes and facilities of the Max Planck Society, Germany’s leading national organisation for basic research.
The MPI-IS is split between two sites, one in the major city of Stuttgart and one in the nearby smaller city of Tübingen. Both lie in the state of Baden-Württemberg in south-west Germany, an area of breathtakingly beautiful nature with forests and mountains. In this film, we want to show you what it is like to work as a researcher here at MPI-IS.

Gerhard Rempe - Quantum Dynamics (VIDEO PORTRAIT)
Gerhard Rempe is scientific Director of the Quantum Dynamics Group at the Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics. He and his team investigate the quantum world - in the form of individual atoms and molecules - and its effects for future applications, in particular the processing of information. Their experiments follow two different strategies: one is devoted to finding new interfaces between the classical and the quantum world, like ever better optical resonators or novel light sources. The other focus is to gradually increase the size of quantum systems, connecting several atoms and photons as qubits in a larger quantum network, to at some point maybe even a global quantum internet.
The interview and lab tour with Gerhard Rempe was recorded in November 2021 at the Max Planck Institute ...

In addition, up to twelve research groups cover all important facets of ageing research: cell growth control, autophagy, genome stability and DNA repair, chromatin processing, immune system and infection, evolution, and protein homeostasis.
Our eight core facilities offer all researchers the opportunity to pursue their research questions with the latest techniques and state-of-the-art methods in the areas of bioinformatics, comparative biology, CRIPSR screening, FACS and imaging, metabolomics, phenotyping, proteomics, and transgenesis.
Our institute offers career support and programmes on every level, from undergraduate students to postdocs. At the Cologne Graduate School of Ageing Research, outstanding PhD students receive training in biological and medical disciplines, gain experience in the use of diverse model organisms as well as state-of-the-art technologies, and develop communication skills essential for a successful scientific career. Our researchers also benefit from the extensive scientific network in the Cologne/Bonn region.

The interview and lab tour with Gerhard Rempe was recorded in November 2021 at the Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics. The video was produced with the support of ScienceRelations.
