Max Planck
Max Karl Ernst Ludwig Planck, FRS (/plɑːŋk/; 23 April 1858 – 4 October 1947) was a German theoretical physicist whose work on quantum theory won him the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1918.
Planck made many contributions to theoretical physics, but his fame as a physicist rests primarily on his role as an originator of quantum theory, which revolutionized human understanding of atomic and subatomic processes. However, his name is also known on a broader academic basis, through the renaming in 1948 of the German scientific institution, the Kaiser Wilhelm Society (of which he was twice president), as the Max Planck Society (MPS). The MPS now includes 83 institutions representing a wide range of scientific directions.
Early life and career
Planck came from a traditional, intellectual family. His paternal great-grandfather and grandfather were both theology professors in Göttingen; his father was a law professor in Kiel and Munich.
Planck was born in Kiel, Holstein, to Johann Julius Wilhelm Planck and his second wife, Emma Patzig. He was baptised with the name of Karl Ernst Ludwig Marx Planck; of his given names, Marx (a now obsolete variant of Markus or maybe simply an error for Max, which is actually short for Maximilian) was indicated as the primary name. However, by the age of ten he signed with the name Max and used this for the rest of his life.

Max Planck Society
The Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Science (German: Max-Planck-Gesellschaft zur Förderung der Wissenschaften e. V.; abbreviated MPG) is a formally independent non-governmental and non-profit association of German research institutes founded in 1948 and named in honor of its former president, theoretical physicist Max Planck. The society is funded by the federal and state governments of Germany as well as other sources. The Max Planck Society is the successor to Kaiser Wilhelm Society established in 1911.
According to its primary goal Max Planck Society supports fundamental research in the natural, life and social sciences, the arts and humanities in its 83 (as of January 2014) Max Planck Institutes. The society has a total staff of approximately 17,000 permanent employees, including 5,470 scientists, plus around 4,600 non-tenured scientists and guests. Society budget for 2014 was about €1.6 billion.
The Max Planck Institutes focus on excellence in research. The Max Planck Society has a world-leading reputation as a science and technology research organization, with 33 Nobel Prizes awarded to their scientists, and are generally regarded as the foremost basic research organization in Europe and the world. In 2013, the Nature Publishing Index placed the Max Planck institutes fifth worldwide in terms of research published in Nature journals (after Harvard, MIT, Stanford and the US NIH). In terms of total research volume (unweighted by citations or impact), the Max Planck Society is only outranked by the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Russian Academy of Sciences and Harvard University. The Thomson Reuters-Science Watch website placed the Max Planck Society as the second leading research organization worldwide following Harvard University, in terms of the impact of the produced research over science fields.

Gerhard Rempe is scientific Director of the Quantum Dynamics Group at the Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics. He and his team investigate the quantum world - in the form of individual atoms and molecules - and its effects for future applications, in particular the processing of information. Their experiments follow two different strategies: one is devoted to finding new interfaces between the classical and the quantum world, like ever better optical resonators or novel light sources. Our institute offers career support and programmes on every level, from undergraduate students to postdocs. At the Cologne Graduate School of Ageing Research, outstanding PhD students receive training in biological and medical disciplines, gain experience in the use of diverse model organisms as well as state-of-the-art technologies, and develop communication skills essential for a successful scientific career. Our researchers also benefit from the extensive scientific network in the Cologne/Bonn region.

Gerhard Rempe is scientific Director of the Quantum Dynamics Group at the Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics. He and his team investigate the quantum world - in the form of individual atoms and molecules - and its effects for future applications, in particular the processing of information. Their experiments follow two different strategies: one is devoted to finding new interfaces between the classical and the quantum world, like ever better optical resonators or novel light sources. The other focus is to gradually increase the size of quantum systems, connecting several atoms and photons as qubits in a larger quantum network, to at some point maybe even a global quantum internet.
The interview and lab tour with Gerhard Rempe was recorded in November 2021 at the Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics. The video was produced with the support of ScienceRelations.

At the Max Planck Institute for Biology of Ageing we dedicate our research to deciphering the mystery of growing old: Why do organisms age at all? How can we influence our ageing and lifespan? And how do we ensure that our bodies remain fit and healthy as we grow older?
Over 300 employees from more than 35 nations help to answer these basic questions. Four departments focus the institute’s research on nutrition and signalling pathways, molecular genetics of ageing, mitochondrial function, and brain epigenetics. In addition, up to twelve research groups cover all important facets of ageing research: cell growth control, autophagy, genome stability and DNA repair, chromatin processing, immune system and infection, evolution, and protein homeostasis.
Our eight core facilities offer all researchers the opportunity to pursue their research questions with the latest techniques and state-of-the-art methods in the areas of bioinformatics, comparative biology, CRIPSR screening, FACS and imaging, metabolomics, phenotyping, proteomics, and transgenesis.
Our institute offers career support and programmes on every level, from undergraduate students to postdocs. At the Cologne Graduate School of Ageing Research, outstanding PhD students receive training in biological and medical disciplines, gain experience in the use of diverse model organisms as well as state-of-the-art technologies, and develop communication skills essential for a successful scientific career. Our researchers also benefit from the extensive scientific network in the Cologne/Bonn region.

Gerhard Rempe is scientific Director of the Quantum Dynamics Group at the Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics. He and his team investigate the quantum world - in the form of individual atoms and molecules - and its effects for future applications, in particular the processing of information. Their experiments follow two different strategies: one is devoted to finding new interfaces between the classical and the quantum world, like ever better optical resonators or novel light sources. The other focus is to gradually increase the size of quantum systems, connecting several atoms and photons as qubits in a larger quantum network, to at some point maybe even a global quantum internet.
The interview and lab tour with Gerhard Rempe was recorded in November 2021 at the Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics. The video was produced with the support of ScienceRelations.

Max Karl Ernst Ludwig Planck, FRS (/plɑːŋk/; 23 April 1858 – 4 October 1947) was a German theoretical physicist whose work on quantum theory won him the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1918.
Planck made many contributions to theoretical physics, but his fame as a physicist rests primarily on his role as an originator of quantum theory, which revolutionized human understanding of atomic and subatomic processes. However, his name is also known on a broader academic basis, through the renaming in 1948 of the German scientific institution, the Kaiser Wilhelm Society (of which he was twice president), as the Max Planck Society (MPS). The MPS now includes 83 institutions representing a wide range of scientific directions.
Early life and career
Planck came from a traditional, intellectual family. His paternal great-grandfather and grandfather were both theology professors in Göttingen; his father was a law professor in Kiel and Munich.
Planck was born in Kiel, Holstein, to Johann Julius Wilhelm Planck and his second wife, Emma Patzig. He was baptised with the name of Karl Ernst Ludwig Marx Planck; of his given names, Marx (a now obsolete variant of Markus or maybe simply an error for Max, which is actually short for Maximilian) was indicated as the primary name. However, by the age of ten he signed with the name Max and used this for the rest of his life.
