MASPETH QUEENS - Walking Around New York City
We take a Walk around New York City today in my neighborhood of Maspeth in Queens. I show you some of the old signs in the area, local stores and we finish with a great conversation with two auto repair shop owners/workers. The business has been around since the 1950's and the guys were really gracious in talking to me about their cars.
The name "Maspeth" is derived from the name of Mespeatches Indians, one of the 13 main Indian tribes that inhabited Long Island. It is translated to mean "at the bad waterplace" relating to the many stagnant swamps that existed in the area.
The area known today as Maspeth was chartered by New Netherlanders and British settlers in the early 17th century. The Dutch had purchased land in the area known today as Queens in 1635, and within a few years began ch...

⁴ᴷ⁶⁰ Walking NYC : Ridgewood to Maspeth, Queens (Myrtle Avenue & Fresh Pond Road) (February 2020)
Google Maps Route: https://goo.gl/maps/5hxHgJY6NtGMukCx6
A walk through the neighborhood of Ridgewood, Queens to Grand Avenue in Maspeth, Queens. I walk along Stephen Street, Myrtle Avenue, and Fresh Pond Road.
From Wikipedia:
"Ridgewood is a neighborhood in the New York City borough of Queens. It borders the neighborhoods of Maspeth, Middle Village and Glendale, as well as the Brooklyn neighborhoods of Bushwick and East Williamsburg. Historically, the neighborhood straddled the Queens-Brooklyn boundary.
The etymology of Ridgewood's name is disputed, but may have referred to Ridgewood Reservoir, the local geography, or a road. Ridgewood was settled in the 17th century by the British, while nearby Bushwick was settled by the Dutch. The presence of the adjacent settlements led to decades ...

Grand Ave Maspeth Queens | Judy Garland NY History
Grand Ave in Maspeth, Queens is our NYC History tour for today. Along the way we find locations for Judy Garland and Goodfellas, plus we visit Garlinge Triangle and the World War I memorial.
We start at the site of the old Maspeth theater where Judy Garland used to perform. From there I give you the location on Grand Ave of the famous Billy Batts bar scene in the movie Goodfellas, which was filmed just one block from where I was standing, though the bar no longer exists.
After that it is a visit to the Walter A. Garlinge war memorial and finally a walk down Grand Avenue in Maspeth towards the point where the video starts.
My apologies for the humming on my microphone, it took me a while to work out that the noise was coming from the power on my fridge of all things. It shouldn't happen ...

Police Involved Shooting in Maspeth, Queens
At approximately 5:32 p.m., two simultaneous marked radio patrol cars arrived and met a 54-year-old female in front of the location who identified herself as the 911 caller. She directed the officers to the second floor upstairs apartment at that address. She also told the officers that she believed there was a female intruder in the home armed with a knife or a razor. The police officers entered the home to conduct a search for the intruder. As the officers were searching the home the 54-year-old female that had met them in front and said that she called 911, entered the home behind the officers. At some point during the time in the apartment, which was a total of 50 seconds from the time the officers entered the front of the apartment, two shots were fired. The 54-year-old woman came at ...

The Dutch had purchased land in the area known today as Queens in 1635, and within a few years began chartering towns. In 1642, they settled Maspat, under a charter granted to Rev. Francis Doughty, making Maspeth the first English settlement in Queens; the deed that was signed between the Native Americans and the settlers was the first one signed on Long Island. As part of the deed's signature, the "Newtown Patent" granted 13,000 acres (5,300 ha) to settlers. Conflicts with the Maspat tribe forced many settlers to move to what is now Elmhurst in 1643. The settlement was leveled the following year in an attack by Native Indians, and the surviving settlers returned to Manhattan.
In 1652, settlers ventured back to the area, settling an area slightly inland from the previous Maspat location. This new area was called Middleburg, and eventually developed into what is now Elmhurst, bordering Maspeth. Originally, 28 English Quakers had founded the village of Maspeth, which had sizable water and milling industries along Newtown Creek and Maspeth Creek. Two storekeepers, Nathanial Hazard and Francis T. White, sold food and clothes at the Maspeth Town Docks, at what is now 56th Terrace and Rust Street, by the late 18th century. After the
American Revolutionary War, villagers repaved roads with crushed oyster shells or wooden planks.
Columbusville was the name formerly applied to a section of Maspeth. It was a development of Edward Dunn that took place on 69th Place (originally known as Firth Avenue) between Grand Avenue and Caldwell Avenue during 1854–55, and was subsequently absorbed into Maspeth. The name fell into disuse in the 1890s.
Following waves of immigration during the 19th century, Maspeth was home to a shanty town of Boyash (Ludar) Gypsies between 1925 and 1939, though this was eventually bulldozed. By the 1970s, the neighborhood had become home primarily to German, Irish, Lithuanian, and Polish residents. Maspeth was considered relatively safe compared to other New York City neighborhoods experiencing crime increases, and multiple generations of the same family often lived in Maspeth.

While Bushwick was developed rapidly in the 19th century, Ridgewood remained sparsely populated until the early 20th century, when rowhouses were built for the area's rapidly growing, predominantly German population. Ridgewood has become more ethnically diverse since the mid-20th century. Today, large parts of the neighborhood are national and city historic districts.
Ridgewood is patrolled by the New York City Police Department's 104th Precinct. Politically, Ridgewood is represented by the New York City Council's 30th District."

It shouldn't happen any further moving forward.
*The name "Maspeth" is derived from the name of Mespeatches Indians, one of the 13 main Indian tribes that inhabited Long Island. It is translated to mean "at the bad waterplace" relating to the many stagnant swamps that existed in the area.
The area known today as Maspeth was chartered by New Netherlanders and British settlers in the early 17th century. The Dutch had purchased land in the area known today as Queens in 1635, and within a few years began chartering towns. In 1642, they settled Maspat, under a charter granted to Rev. After the

The 54-year-old woman came at the officers with a knife and lunged at them. One of the officers gave direction to put the knife down. We know this because there was body camera video. Subsequently, one officer discharges his service weapon three times striking the female in the torso.
Immediately after firing, shots aid is rendered. EMS is called to the scene. Unfortunately, the 54-year-old female was pronounced deceased at the scene. An approximately 10-inch kitchen knife was recovered and has been secured and it is an ongoing crime scene as we speak. It appears at this time, preliminarily, the 911 caller and the female was again one in the same. Her motivation is unknown at the time. After entering the apartment to investigate, however, she did attack the officers with a knife and I will point out that there is a history of calls to this location.

LIRR C-3's roll west through Maspeth on the Lower Montauk Branch
We have moved east a couple of miles to Maspeth, where we see another set of LIRR C-3's as they deadhead west to Long Island City, as they cross Maspeth Avenue. Maspeth Yard is still here and in use, but the station here, as well as the other stations that used to line the tracks here a long gone. The deadhead consists of C-3 cab car 5017, 3 additional C-3 cars and DE30AC 418 shoving on the rear. If you have any questions about the video, feel free to message me. Comments are welcome. The video was taken on March 5th, 2012.

Long Island Rail Road Move Over The Lower Montauk In Maspeth #shorts
On the early morning of Friday, January 20, 2023, MTA Long Island Railroad made some unusual moves as Bombardier M7s heading out to be scrapped. Bracketed by a pair of EMD built MP15s, first the cars were taken over the Lower Montauk Line, where LIRR does make occasional appearances along with tenant and freight operator New York & Atlantic Railway, but never with electric MU cars as the line is not third rail powered. Then after passing the through the Fresh Pond Yard, the cars headed through the East New York Tunnel and continued down the Bay Ridge Line to the New York New Jersey Rail 65 Street Yard where very few appearances by any LIRR operated power are known to have occurred since NYAR took over the operation in 1997. These cars have been deemed irreparably damaged in an accident and...
