FBI Agent Alex Cross is on vacation in Los Angeles with his family and with his girlfriend, Jamilla Hughes (from Violets Are Blue) when he receives word that a Hollywood actress has been murdered. The actress was shot and her face violently slashed with a knife. An email describing the killer's mindset before and during the murder as well as allusions to the killer's motivation was sent to an entertainment reporter named Arnold Grinner at the Los Angeles Times. The emails are signed "Mary Smith". The actress happens to be friends with the wife of the President of the United States who has asked FBI Director Ron Burns to look into the matter. Burns then gives the case to Cross, who goes to the scene, despite protests from Nana and Jamilla. After getting there, he does not return until very late in the afternoon, but by then several things have happened. Jamilla has left to return to San Francisco, which doesn't surprise Alex, and that Alex Jr. "Ali" has been taken away by Christine, who had come down to spend time with Ali and Alex.
Mary, Mary is a play by Jean Kerr. The play became one of the longest-running productions of the decade.
After two previews, the Broadway production opened on March 8, 1961 at the original Helen Hayes Theatre (demolished in 1982), where it ran for nearly three years and nine months before transferring to the Morosco where it closed in December 1964, after 1572 performances. Directed by Joseph Anthony, the original cast starred Barbara Bel Geddes as Mary, Barry Nelson as Bob, Michael Rennie as Dirk, John Cromwell as Oscar, and Betsy Von Furstenberg as Tiffany. Bel Geddes was nominated for the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play.
The plot focuses on wisecracking cynic Mary and infuriatingly sensible Bob, only recently divorced and who haven't seen each other in nine months, who meet at his apartment in the hope they can avert an audit by the IRS. A snowstorm forces Mary to spend the night, and the following morning mutual friend and lawyer Oscar, Hollywood heartthrob and neighbor Dirk Winston, and Bob's considerably younger fiancée Tiffany arrive on the scene. The comedy's humor is derived from discussions about income taxes, marriage, alimony, divorce, remarriage, extra-marital affairs, weight-loss programs, exercise, and sex.

Despite himself, Hunham starts empathizing and bonding with one of his students, AngusTully (Dominic Sessa), as well as Barton cafeteria manager, MaryLamb (Da’Vine JoyRandolph), who is grieving over the loss of her son.

One of the main reasons we stuck with Giamatti’s misanthropic mess of a human being in “The Holdovers” is the fact that Da’Vine JoyRandolph’s MaryLamb stuck with Giamatti’s Paul Hunham as a friend, and if Mary saw something in Paul, we could do.
