Mark Thompson is a two-time Emmy award winner for writing, hosting and producing specials for the Fox Broadcasting Company stations.
Career as a television host
No stranger to live TV, Mark Thompson is a regular hosting television shows of high drama and even life and death.
Mark has hosted high profile "event" shows like Celebrity Daredevils Live (FOX) with Dennis Rodman and Angie Everhart, all the Robbie Knievel jumps since 1990 (building to building in Las Vegas, over a portion of the Grand Canyon, and over an oncoming train). He even was hosting a live Knievel jump during which the weather prevented the jump and Thompson was asked to "fill" for the entire hour.
There was no jump and the show registered a 25 share.
New Year's Eve viewers know Mark as a regular New Year's Eve host for FOX Television as well. In those shows he has presided over everything from building implosions to musical acts.
Then with a different kind of drama and a bit of glamor, Mark Thompson hosted the "red carpet" arrival show for the most recent Emmy Awards on Fox Television (Sept. 2011). It was his second time hosting an Emmy red carpet show.
WPIG is an FM radio station located in Olean, New York. Branded as “95.7 The Big Pig,” the station operates at 95.7MHz on the FM dial and operates a mainstream country music format. It is owned by Community Broadcasters, LLC.
History
The station originally signed on as WHDL-FM in 1949 and in its early years was affiliated, like most upstate New York FMs of the time, with WQXR in New York City. James F. Hastings, later a U.S. Congressman, ran the station from 1952 to 1966. The call sign was changed from WHDL-FM to WEBF-FM in recognition of station owner E. Boyd Fitzpatrick. During the 1980s, the station aired what today's jockeys pejoratively referred to as an "elevator music" (likely something along the lines of middle-of-the-road, beautiful music or easy listening) format. In September 1988, under new ownership, the station was known as WOLN (not to be confused with FM 91.3, the public radio station that uses the call signs) with an adult contemporary format. A year later, on September 29, 1989, the call sign was changed to WPIG. Later, on November 6, mirroring the national trend, the station switched formats to the rapidly burgeoning country music format and became known as "The Big Pig 95.7, Today's Sizzlin' Country," which remains the station's motto.
Mark Thompson (born 1973, Norfolk, England) is a British astronomer, television presenter and writer best known for being one of the presenting team on the BBC show Stargazing Live and is a regular face on The Alan Titchmarsh Show. He has been called the "Peoples' Astronomer".
Biography
Thompson has lived in Norfolk all his life and was first enthused about astronomy aged 10 when he saw the rings of Saturn through a telescope. He has remained living in the county because the night skies are very dark and ideal for stargazing.
Thompson had given up his ambition to present on TV and had retrained as a pilot when (in 2009) he was picked to become a presenter on the BBC's The One Show.
Thompson was the first amateur astronomer to become a council member of the Royal Astronomical Society. He is President of the Norwich Astronomical Society. (In fact Mark was not the first amateur astronomer to become a council member of the RAS. Since it was founded in 1820 as the Astronomical Society of London (receiving its Royal Charter in 1830 from King William IV) it has had many amateurs on its council, including many of its founding members (of the original 12 founding members in 1820, 11 were amateurs, including the Sir John Herschel, the son of William). Nigel Calder and Anthony Kinder, both amateurs, were members of the council in 2001-2004.)

Mark Thompson - Observing the Orchestra of the Stars
Astronomer and TV presenter, Mark Thompson looks to the skies and points towards the next advancement in space telescopes.
Whilst the refracting and reflecting telescopes used by amateurs can see great distances, distortion is caused by peering through the Earth's atmosphere. In contrast, the much larger Hubble space telescope floats above the atmosphere and is able to produce amazing images like Mark's chosen view of the Great Orion Nebula, also known as M42.
But Hubble isn't the end of the story. The James Webb Space Telescope is set for launch later in 2018 and, designed to work primarily in the infrared range of the electromagnetic spectrum, it will be able to look further and deeper into space than ever before.

He said the move, which saw Mark Byford leave the BBC with a total payout of £949,000, was part of a move to axe senior executives which would give the BBC "£19 million of savings for every year into the future" and he believed he "had the full support of the BBC Trust" to order it.
The committee's chair, Margaret Hodge, said people were looking at BBC management in "dismay" and asked Mr Thompson if the BBC had, under his management, lost the plot.
He said: "I do not think we lost the plot."
