What is Fish School? | The Marine Mammal Center
Every year, we rescue hundreds of marine mammal pups that were either separated from their mothers too early, or never quite got the hang of feeding themselves. Sometimes the pups come to us so young, they don’t even know what a fish is! So, we enroll these young seals in “fish school,” a program that teaches them how to find and eat fish on their own.
Caring people like you give these pups all the time (and fish!) they need to prepare for life in the wild. Every pound of fish to feed hungry marine mammal patients cost about $1. Provide a pup in need with fish today at https://bit.ly/3yvBcEM.

At our busiest time of year, we can have over 100 marine mammal patients in our care. Individual patients are given specific medications and vitamins as part of their treatment regimen. But sometimes there can be five or six seemingly identical seals in a single pen. So how does our expert animal care team tell them apart? Why, with hat tags of course!

There are around 1,400 Hawaiian monk seals left in the world and they all live in and around Hawai`i. Since 2014, The Marine Mammal Center has rehabilitated about 2% of the entire Hawaiian monk seal population through their animal hospital, Ke Kai Ola. Rehabilitating these animals also allows researchers to collect important scientific information that helps us understand the health of the animals, the health of the population, and the health of the ocean overall.
Entanglement in marine debris is one of the largest threats these animals face. Hawaiian monk seals have one of the highest documented entanglement rates among all pinniped species and the number of seals found entangled remains largely the same each year. Lost, abandoned, and intentionally discarded fishing gear comprise some of the largest entanglement threats.
While 4ocean’s mission is to clean the ocean and coastlines, we know that ocean plastic also threatens wildlife and critical marine habitats. Our nonprofit partnerships help raise awareness about the impact of ocean plastic and address countless threats to marine life.
In January 2019, we partnered with The Marine Mammal Center to help save Hawaiian monk seals. The purple 4ocean Hawaiian Monk Seal Bracelet removes one pound of trash from the ocean and coastlines. It also supports rescue and rehabilitation efforts at Ke Kai Ola so these marine mammals can be enjoyed by future generations.

Marine Mammals: Champions of the Deep
Beneath the surface of the ocean exists an incredibly hostile world - an icy world immersed in eternal darkness where the pressure is phenomenal. This world is the abyssal domain - the largest habitat on our planet.
Yet, some air-breathing, young-feeding marine mammals, like us, spend much of their time in this dark world. Scientists are now discovering that the depths reached by these ocean giants are much greater than previously thought.
Using transmitter beacons worn by the animals, abyssal cameras and 3D scan images, this film accompanies and illustrates a contemporary scientific revolution. Constructed according to a dramatic progression towards the abyss - from the shallowest to the deepest dive - it brings to the forefront the often unknown animals and their remarkable physiologica...

Reducing the Impact of Ship Noise on Marine Mammals
Human shipping operations have increased significantly in the past few decades. While that means international trade and cheap goods for humans, it also means the ocean has experienced an increase in noise pollution. This has a measurable negative impact on marine mammals and other aquatic life. Could mathematics be the solution? This interview explores how optimization techniques can guide voyage optimization in a way that handles multiple optimization objectives including fuel cost and sound reduction.

Welcome, nature lovers! Today, we're diving into the depths of the ocean to explore some of the most fascinating creatures on Welcome, nature lovers! Today, we're diving into the depths of the ocean to explore some of the most fascinating creatures on the planet - marine mammals!
These amazing animals are masters of the sea, with adaptations that allow them to survive and thrive in even the most challenging environments. From playful dolphins to majestic whales, these marine mammals will leave you in awe and wonder. So, strap on your goggles, grab your snorkel, and get ready to join us on a wild adventure as we explore the incredible world of marine mammals!
There are approximately 5,500 species of mammals on Earth. They are a diverse group of animals that include everything from tiny kangaroo rats, bats and squirrels to massive hippos and elephants.
Mammals are classified together because they share some key characteristics that make them unique compared to other animals.
Mammals are warm-blooded which means they are able to regulate their body temperature to stay stable, regardless of their environment.
Another distinctive trait of mammals is the presence of hair or fur on their bodies. Hair or fur serves multiple purposes, including providing warmth, protection, and camouflage, depending on the specific species.
Mammals give birth to live young and are also defined by the presence of mammary glands in females. These glands produce milk, which is essential for nourishing their young.
All mammals also have lungs which are used taking in oxygen from the air and releasing carbon dioxide from the body.
A marine mammal is a type of mammal that is specifically adapted to living in marine or aquatic environments, such as oceans, seas, and coastal areas. Just like land mammals, marine mammals are warm-blooded, have hair or fur, females have mammary glands and all marine mammals have lungs, meaning they need to come to the surface to breathe at regular intervals.
Marine mammals possess unique physiological, anatomical, and behavioral adaptations that enable them to thrive in their watery habitats.
Marine mammals are a diverse group of mammals, which can be classified into four main groups:
Cetaceans: This group includes whales, dolphins, and porpoises. They are characterized by their streamlined bodies, dorsal fins, and blowholes for breathing. Cetaceans are highly intelligent and social animals, often living in complex social structures.
Pinnipeds: This group comprises seals, sea lions, and walruses. Pinnipeds are characterized by their flipper-like limbs, thick layers of blubber for insulation, and their ability to both swim in water and move on land. They are primarily carnivorous, feeding on fish and various marine invertebrates.
Sirenians: This group includes manatees and dugongs, which are also known as sea cows. Sirenians are large, slow-moving herbivores that feed primarily on seagrasses and other aquatic vegetation. They have a rounded, barrel-shaped body and paddle-like flippers for locomotion.
Marine carnivores: This group consists of a few species of marine-adapted mammals that do not fit into the other three categories, such as sea otters and polar bears. These animals have various adaptations that allow them to hunt and feed in marine environments. For example, sea otters have dense fur for insulation and use tools to break open the shells of their prey, while polar bears are powerful swimmers that hunt seals on sea ice.
And that's a wrap on our epic journey through the world of marine mammals! Fron giant whales, acrobatic dolphins, the chilled out sea lions, and the mysterious manatees, it's amazing how diverse and fascinating these creatures are, right?

You might think the way mammals eat is pretty simple: They open their mouths and bite the thing they want to eat. But for some marine mammals, feeding strategies can include suction or vortices!

Constructed according to a dramatic progression towards the abyss - from the shallowest to the deepest dive - it brings to the forefront the often unknown animals and their remarkable physiological adaptations to the pressures of the great depths.
