Meet the House of Habsburg
This video is filled with simplifications and generalizations. It should be regarded as a brief introduction to the vast subject that is the history of the Habsburg dynasty.
The Habsburg dynasty is arguably the most influential of the european royal houses. Vast empires from the danube stretching even to the Americas, whole countries named after their figureheads, such as the Philippines, patronage of artists such as Diego Velázquez and Mozart, all of this are testaments of the mark left by the House of Habsburg on the modern history of our planet.

The Royal House of Habsburg, one of the most powerful dynasties of Medieval and Renaissance Europe, reigned over much of Europe for centuries. But genetic inheritance and the perils of inbreeding may explain their demise.
Like many royal families their expansion and hold on power came about in part through inter-family marriages. But over time, generation after generation of inbreeding, helped contribute to some of the physical ailments that often plagued the family as well as the distinctive look with their big lower lips, long noses and the distinctive “Habsburg jaw.”

Charles of Habsburg arrives to Spain to become king (Carlos, rey emperador)
After the death of Ferdinand of Aragon (1452-1516), the Regent of Spain Cardinal Cisneros writes to Ferdinand's eldest grandson, Charles of Habsburg, to come to Spain and claim his kingdoms, even though his mother Queen Joanna the Mad is still alive (and imprisoned). The new foreigner teenager king Charles, who was born and raised in Flanders, goes to Spain with his sister Eleanor and his Flemish advisers, but he is not very welcome.

Cousins married cousins and uncles married nieces. All in the name of keeping wealth and power in the family and keeping their blood blue. They were oblivious to the havoc all this intermarrying was playing on their genetics. The tragic results were numerous family members with mental illness, intellectual disability, vulnerability to diseases, and a famously unusual continence which came to be known as the Hapsburg Jaw. Just how inbred where the Habsburgs? Short answer, very. Long answer, well, lets get into it!

The Habsburg family ruled central Europe since the early medieval times to World War I. To keep themselves in such high positions, the Habsburgs had to develop unique strategies to fight their political enemies. To keep the family pure, they often married within their family, which resulted in a very weak genetic pool and many mental and physical problems.

'Carlos, Rey Emperador' is a Spanish TV series about the life of Charles of Habsburg, Holy Roman Emperor and King of Spain, the most powerful man in his time.
(Sorry for grammar mistakes in the translation.)
I own nothing.
If you like the video, watch the series on RTVE.
