The Forgotten Religion: Manichaeism
From the 3rd to the 7th century AD a new religion spread. It combined the teachings of Zoroaster, Buddha, Jesus and one more prophet: Mani. For a brief moment this religion was among the most widespread, with followers from the Roman Empire all the way to China. And then it dissappeared.. well, almost. Join me today as we uncover the forgotten religion of Manichaeism.

Grass Temple, the last temple of the Manichean religion
People still worship here- I learned in college & grad school that Manicheanism is a dead religion, but it's not true! In China, the Manichean religion became syncretistic with Taoism and Buddhism, and people still worship here, take care of the grounds, and there's even a convent! (Sorry, we didn't get to meet the nuns- they're cloistered!) But the grounds here are beautifully maintained and amazing. It's incredibly relaxing- go to Jinjiang and check it out for yourself!

Mani Biography | Animated Video | Famous Prophet and founder of Manichaeism
Mani was born in AD 216, near Seleucia-Ctesiphon, in the Babylonian district of Nahr Kutha. His father, Patik, was a member of the Jewish Christian sec of Eclesaites, while his mother Maryam was of Parthian descent.
At the age of 12 and also at 24 years, Mani had a vision of a heavenly twin that called him to leave his father's Baptist sect and become a true preacher of Jesus' message of the new gospel. Although Mani had been raised in a heterodox Babylonian environment, the community where he lived was of Jewish Christians, mingled with some Gnostic features that believed in the incarnations of heavenly apostles.

This Core Concept video focuses on Augustine of Hippo's work, Confessions, specifically on his engagement with the Gnostic religion of Manichaeism, his dissatisfaction with the answers to important philosophical questions that they provided, and his disappointed hopes in their bishop Faustus
