The Lost Trident Sessions is a studio album by jazz fusion group the Mahavishnu Orchestra, released on 21 September 1999 through Sony Music Entertainment. It was originally recorded in June 1973 at Trident Studios but was not released until 26 years later. According to the album's detailed liner notes, in November 1998 Columbia Records producer Bob Belden stumbled upon two quarter-inch tapes in Columbia's Los Angeles vault whilst gathering material for a remastered reissue of the Mahavishnu Orchestra's 1972 album Birds of Fire. The tapes were otherwise unlabelled besides the recording location, but upon further inspection they were revealed to be the two-track mixes for what would have been the Mahavishnu Orchestra's third studio album at the time.
Guitarist John McLaughlin told The Music Gig magazine in 1977:
With the exception of "John's Song #2", all compositions on this album were performed on other albums: "Dream", "Trilogy" and "Sister Andrea" appeared on the Mahavishnu Orchestra's 1973 live album Between Nothingness and Eternity, whilst "I Wonder" and "Steppings Tones" appeared on violinist Jerry Goodman and keyboardist Jan Hammer's 1974 album Like Children.
The Mahavishnu Orchestra was a jazz-rock fusion group led by John McLaughlin, active during 1971–1976 and again in 1984–1987 after major line-up changes.
First Mahavishnu Orchestra
The band's original lineup featured "Mahavishnu" John McLaughlin on acoustic and electric guitars, with members Billy Cobham on drums, Rick Laird on bass guitar (although Tony Levin was the first person McLaughlin called to join the band),Jan Hammer on electric and acoustic piano and synthesizer, and Jerry Goodman on violin. This first incarnation of the ensemble was a multinational group: McLaughlin is from Yorkshire, England; Cobham from Panama; Hammer from Prague, Czechoslovakia; Goodman from Chicago, Illinois; and Laird from Dublin, Ireland. This group was considered an important pioneer in the jazz fusion movement. McLaughlin and Cobham met while performing and recording with Miles Davis during the Bitches Brew sessions. McLaughlin was also influenced in his conception of the band by his studies with Indian guruSri Chinmoy, who encouraged him to take the name "Mahavishnu" which means "Divine compassion, power and justice." or simply "Great Vishnu", an aspect of Vishnu.

Mahavishnu Orchestra - One Word (Châteauvallon, France, 1972 - synchronised)
Here's a snippet from their Chateauvallon concert but it's replaced with radio-sourced audio and synched. (If you don't think there's much difference in the audio, I highly suggest wearing your headphones)

Watch for:
-at 0:00, the snare goes from the right channel to centre channel - very creative!
-at 0:53, the radio-sourced audio persists while the video gets abruptly cut.
-at 2:23, MEH (comical relief)
-at 8:36, drum solo
-at 14:03, wrap it up
-at 15:19, this motif is called Resolution when describing in the context of Mahavishnu Orchestra; the motif was first heard in Tony Williams Lifetime's single One Word.
-Throughout the whole video, this was equalised (the thin-sounding audio don't do much for me.)

Guitarist John McLaughlin told The Music Gig magazine in 1977:

i am a daimon among twelve you say "you will", i say "i am" the ouranic and the cthonic your world will crumble at our feet i can destroy all of earth my mighty sea may drown you all give us sacrifice, keep the rite and forever you'll have day and night none defies me in my domain nor do i mock my brothers names i am one in the cosmic order divided in fate and honour the sea is my weapon the honorless my foe the water you are upon
