Ma'loula, Maaloula, or Ma'lula (Aramaic:ܡܥܠܘܠܐ, Maʿlūlā; Arabic:معلولاMaʿlūlā) is a town in the Rif Dimashq Governorate in Syria. The town is located 56km to the northeast of Damascus, and built into the rugged mountainside, at an altitude of more than 1500 metres. It is known as one of three remaining villages where Western Aramaic is still spoken, the other two being the nearby villages Jubb'adin and Al-Sarkha (Bakhah).
Etymology
Maʿlūlā is from the Aramaic word maʿʿəlā (ܡܥܠܐ), meaning 'entrance'. Until recently, the town was dominated by speakers of Western Neo-Aramaic.
Climate
Population
According to the Syria Central Bureau of Statistics, Ma'loula had a population of 2,762 in the 2004 census. However, during summer, it increases to about 10,000, due to people coming from Damascus for holidays. Half a century ago, 15,000 people lived in Ma'loula.
Religiously, the population consists of both Christians (mainly Eastern Orthodox and Melkite Catholics) and Muslims. For the Muslim inhabitants, the legacy is all the more remarkable given that they were not Arabised, unlike most other Syrians who like them were Islamised over the centuries but also adopted Arabic and shifted to an "Arab" ethnic identity.

Battle for Syria Christian town of Maaloula continues
A BBC correspondent in Syria has said the battle for an ancient Christian town is continuing, despite reports that government forces had retaken it.
Jeremy Bowen said that a heavy gunfight with rebels was continuing in Maaloula, with smoke rising into the sky.
He added that he had not seen evidence confirming religious sites had been damaged by al-Qaeda-linked jihadists.
Fighting over the town, 55km (34 miles) north of Damascus, began last week after rebels attacked a checkpoint.

Christian village Maaloula falls into jihadists' hands as Al-Qaeda grows in Syria
Inside Syria, the number of Al-Qaeda-linked extremists within the opposition ranks is reportedly growing. And they're not just fighting government troops but also their former rebel allies, with the fiercest battles taking place near the Turkish border. Civilians are also suffering with the ancient Christian village of Maaloula just one area to fall into the hands of jihadists. RT's correspondent in Syria Maria Finoshina reports.

In a remote village nestled in Syrias picturesque Oalamoun mountains, resides a small Aramaic community. It is one of the last and it is devoted to preserving Aramaic: the language that Jesus spoke.
Protecting this 3000-year-old language has united Malulas residents: Christians and Muslims are like brothers in this town, says local resident Ibrahim Kamar. Whilst Mel Gibsons The Passion of Christ has revived interest in the language, fears that Aramaic is dying out continue. Malula, where the orphans must recite in Aramaic, is one of the last bastions for a language Mother Superior Savaf describes as a gift from God.

Nestled on the rugged side of the rocky mountains of Qalamoun, north of Damascus, Syria, Maaloula is a small Christian village of a few thousand people, most of whom still speak Aramaic, the language of Christ. At the entrance, a sign reads: "Maaloula, city of culture and history, welcomes you".
And when you walk through the heavy gates of the village, you immediately understand why Maaloula has been, since the early centuries, an emblem of Eastern Christianity.
It owes its fame to the troglodyte caves where the first persecuted Christians took refuge, including Saint Thècle, a young Seleucid princess, disciple of Saint Paul. Fleeing from her persecutors, she found refuge in a cave above which was built a Greek Orthodox convent bearing her name.

Syria: How Maaloula was Invaded by al-Qaeda & the FSA, September 21, 2013
How the Ancient & Mostly Christian Town of Maaloula was Invaded by al-Qaeda & the FSA
This video shows excerpts from the planned attack on September 4, 2013 by the foreign-backed insurgents led by al-Qaeda's Jabhat al-Nusra (Nusra Front) and assisted mainly by John McCain's "moderate rebels" from the 'Revolutionaries of Bab Amr' Brigade of the "Free Syrian Army" (FSA) on the ancient and mostly Christian town of Maaloula, the only town in the world where Aramaic is still spoken by its inhabitants. The town retains a highly symbolic importance in Christendom not only due to "Jesus's language" that is still spoken there but also due to its ancient Christian heritage and monasteries.
The invasion of the town was carried out by means of a suicide bomber with the alias of Abu Musaab, whose accent in Arabic indicates that he is most likely from Saudi Arabia, and who blew himself up at the checkpoint situated at the ancient town's main gate. The rhetoric of Jabhat al-Nusra terrorists, as seen from this footage, reveals how their Saudi Wahhabi doctrine ingrains in them a deep hatred of anything that does not conform to their strict and narrow-minded way of life.
The last portion of the video is a report from Russia Today (RT) showing the suffering of the citizens of Maaloula at the hands of these militants who think that they are advancing a divine cause by killing people.
