August 15, 2016 by BOBBY CARTER • Good luck trying to classify Anderson .Paak and his band The Free Nationals. Much of their sound is layered atop a soulful hip-hop foundation; from there, your safest bet is to call it a hodgepodge of genres in the best way possible. Guitarist Jose Rios and bassist Kelsey Gonzalez inject a hard-rock edge into the Hi-Tek-produced "Come Down," this set's opening number. When you hear them play the first few jazz chords of "Heart Don't Stand A Chance," it's hard to simply call this R&B.
It's been a slow build for .Paak, who released a few mixtapes before his 2014 debut album Venice. This year has marked his official breakout with Malibu, on which he did what so many in his position fail to do: He capitalized. After bursting into the spotlight with his appearances on Dr. Dre's Compton LP, he immediately prepped the release of Malibu. The album sculpted an entirely new lane for Anderson .Paak. He can rhyme with best of 'em, and his vocal styling, reminiscent of '70s and '80s greats, is invigorating when set against today's tender R&B elite. Before all that, he's a drummer-slash-bandleader.
I've experienced three separate presentations of this band. First, there's the recorded version, on which .Paak collaborates with some of hip-hop's finest producers. Then, their tight stage show hits you in the chest with 90-plus minutes of pure energy. In the midst of a whirlwind tour, they stopped by the Tiny Desk and reworked three cuts from Malibu, along with an audience request that shocked even them. They stripped down and pulled back just enough to fill the room.

Paulinho da Costa - Percussion
Kirk Whalum - Saxophone solo
Born Luther Ronzoni Vandross, Jr. , April 20, 1951 in New York City (New York), died July 1, 2005 in Edison (New Jersey), Luther Vandross was an American singer, songwriter and record producer. Throughout his career, Vandross was an in-demand background vocalist for several different artists including Judy Collins, Chaka Khan, Bette Midler, Diana Ross, David Bowie, Janet Jackson, Barbra Streisand, Ben E. King, and Donna Summer. He later became the lead vocalist of the group Change, which released its certified gold debut album, The Glow of Love, in 1980 on Warner Bros. Records. After Vandross left the group, he was signed to Epic Records as a solo artist and released his debut solo album, Never Too Much, in 1981.
At the age of three, having his own phonograph, he taught himself to play the piano by ear.
He became interested in R&B music during high school, and in 1972, his song "Everybody Rejoice" was picked up for the Broadway musical The Wiz. Soon after, he started recording commercial jingles and worked as a backup singer and arranger for such popular artists as David Bowie, Bette Midler and Barbara Streisand.
In 1981, Vandross signed with Epic and released his debut album, Never Too Much, which sold more than a million copies. He released several subsequent albums throughout the 1980s, often partnering with such luminary female artists as Aretha Franklin. Though Vandross was a major R&B phenomenon, it wasn't until the early 1990s that he became a pop success. He won his first Grammy in 1991 for "Here and Now," two in 1992 for co-writing and performing "Power of Love," and a fourth in 1997 for "Your Secret Love."
Vandross continued to produce recordings throughout the 1990s with great success. These included a Top Ten remake of "Endless Love" with Mariah Carey, "This is Christmas" in 1996 and "I Know" in 1998.
He appeared via video at the 2004 Grammys, where he won four awards for his last album "Dance With My Father," including Song of the Year.

NOTE: B.A. (Benjamin Albert) ROLFE (b. 1879 in Brasher Falls, New York – d. 1956 in Walpole, Massachusetts) – American movie producer and dance bandleader. At a young age he played the piccolo and cornet in his father's band, touring the U.S. east coast and Europe. After high school, he performed as clown in a traveling circus until joining the Majestic Theater Orchestra in Utica, New York where he led the brass instrument department. Around 1919 B.A. Rolfe turned his interest towards movies and in 1915 he founded B.A. Rolfe Photoplays, a film production company known for his work on The Master Mystery starring Harry Houdini (1918), Love Without Question (1920) and A Woman's Business (1920). Rolfe’s company produced more than 50 silent movies, however mounting financial difficulties resulted in Rolfe Photoplays Inc. going out of business in 1920. B.A. Rolfe turned towards the music market, where he became the vaudeville producer and a performing soloist. In 1924-25 he worked with the renowned bandleader Vincent Lopez and soon he established his own dance band. The style of the hot dance music they played gained high popularity in various dance venues in New York and B.A. Rolfe’s band was contracted at the Broadway night club called Palais d’Or, the term taken over by the band as their name. B.A. Rolfe was billed as Virtuoso Trumpet. In 1926 he signed with Edison Records as an exclusive Edison artist using the label name B.A. Rolfe and His Lucky Strike Orchestra until 1929, when Edison Records suspended it’s business. B.A. Rolfe’s band did not survive the Great Depression, which apart from many inconveniences for the existence of the Jazz Age dance orchestras, also had the fact that public taste had changed and swing music performed by big bands started to dominate the clubs. In the early 1930s B.A. Rolfe was busy making electrical transcriptions and the Vitaphone shorts, in 1935 he became the leader of The Goodrich Silvertown Orchestra, performing in many radio shows. With the onset of World War II, Rolfe organized an all-female orchestra to perform patriotic songs.
B.A.Rolfe’s interpretations of popular dance hits of the roaring 20s, especially those signed as B.A. Rolfe and his Palace d’Or or B.A. Rolfe and his Lucky Strike Orchestras are today very much sought after by the 78rpms collectors and considered as belonging to the most iconic of the hot dance style before 1929.

New World Sound joins forces with up and coming Thomas Newson for a massive collaboration on brand new single 'Flute', to go out on DOORN on 11th November.
A 50 second preview was released last week hyping the video as a tantalising teaser for the track, which already racked up over 180,000 views on Youtube and hit #1 in the ADE Buzz Chart. The ID left everybody under the impression it was a new collab from W&W and Blasterjaxx. Originally keeping the artists a secret Spinnin' reveals now the genius behind the track as New World Sound and Thomas Newson.
Built around the haunting pan flute that leads into a thumping bassline, the track combines an intense riff at the core of the track layered with the classical flute to create a peak time dance floor filler.
New World Sound aka 21 and 19 year old brothers Tyrone and Jesse Taylor are two DJ/ Producers currently dominating their homeland around the Gold Coast of Australia, and the world. Their first release 'Peak' earned them huge support from artists such as Tiesto, Ferry Corsten and Judge Jules as well as a score of other hugely influential artists.
New World Sound emerged from the studio again in October 2012 with 'Bantam', a dubstep infused club banger, and received praise from the Grammy Award winning David Guetta, placing it on his monthly top 10 Beatport chart and playing it twice on his F**k Me I'm Famous podcast. The release of 'Aye' in June 2013 marked the duo's signing to Avicii's label LE7ELS and earned New World Sound their first ever BBC Radio 1 play during Pete Tong's weekly essential collection show. They host a weekly radio show on Australia's premiere Dance Music Station, Radio Metro.
Thomas Newson is only 19 year old, yet he looks set to be one of the next up and coming producers. With support from Hardwell dropping his track 'Pallaroid' during his explosive set at Tomorrowland this year, this relative newcomer is one to look out for.
DJ FEEDBACK:
Nicky Romero : 'Cool'
Afrojack : 'Nice'
W&W : 'Full support in all our sets'
Sander van Doorn : 'Full support'
Porter Robinson : 'WHAT THE F*** 5/5!'
Zedd : 'Sick!!!'
Chuckie : 'Nice'
R3hab : 'Great!'
Blasterjaxx : 'Full support!'
Vicetone : 'Catchy drop sound!'
Thomas Gold : 'cool'
Swanky Tunes : 'cool track'
