The Communards formed in 1985 after singer Jimmy Somerville left his earlier band Bronski Beat to team up with classically trained musician Richard Coles. Though mainly a pianist, Coles played a number of instruments and had been seen previously performing the clarinet solos on the Bronski Beat hit "It Ain't Necessarily So". They were joined by bass player Dave Renwick who had also played with Bronski Beat. Somerville was well known for his falsetto singing style, and that he was openly gay during a period of increasing socio-political debate and conflict in the UK regarding lesbian and gay rights.
The name Communards refers to the revolutionaries of the 1871 Paris Commune. Karl Marx said of the uprising that "Yes, gentlemen, the Commune intended to abolish that class property which makes the labor of the many the wealth of the few... this is communism." Somerville seems to have used the term to express his political sympathies while avoiding immediate connections to contemporary activism. However, the use of the term and Somerville's left-wing politics drew regular accusations that he was a communist.
Lovers and Friends (later called For Richer, For Poorer) is an Americansoap opera that premiered on NBC on January 3, 1977 and ended on September 29, 1978. The show was created by Harding Lemay and Paul Rauch, both of whom were also working for the daytime drama Another World. Lovers and Friends was considered to be an indirect spin-off of the former series, and took the place of a direct spin-off (Somerset) on the NBC schedule upon its premiere.
Lovers and Friends
The show was set in the fictional Chicago suburb of Point Clair, Illinois, and focused on the trials and tribulations of two neighboring families, the wealthy Cushings and the more middle class Saxtons. Point Clair was a highly wealthy suburb, allegedly modeled after the real life community of Lake Forest, Illinois, the wealthiest of the North Shore suburbs in the Chicago Metropolitan area.
The Cushings were Richard Cushing (Ron Randell), a successful stockbroker who owned a brokerage house called Cushing and Sons, who also had an affair with his secretary, Barbara Manners; his proper and high society wife, Edith (Nancy Marchand, Laurinda Barrett), who stayed in the marriage, even though she knew about and tended to tolerate Richard's infidelity; their college aged son, Austin (Rod Arrants) who was an alcoholic due to his inability to be an artist and finding out his girlfriend, Laurie Brewster was sent to Europe by her mother to break up their relationship; and their daughter, Megan (Patricia Estrin; Darlene Parks) who was unhappily engaged to wealthy and stuffy Desmond Hamilton (David Knapp). She was engaged to him, because she felt that was what was prudent for her upbringing and she feared defying her mother.
"Lovers and Friends" is a song by Lil Jon & The East Side Boyz. It was released in November 2004 as the third single from the group's album Crunk Juice. The single features fellow Atlanta natives Usher and Ludacris. The single peaked at number three on the Billboard Hot 100. The B-Side "Real N***a Roll Call" features westcoast rapper Ice Cube, and was released as the second single in September 2004.
"Lovers and Friends" used a heavy sample of the original version performed by Michael Sterling from his 1990 album Trouble.

Even though the pain and heartache Seem to follow me wherever I go Though I try and try to hide my feelings They always seem to show Then you try to say you're leaving me And I always have to say no Tell me why is it so Don't wanna let you go I never can say goodbye, girl Don't wanna let you go I never can say goodbye No, no, no, no I never can say goodbye No, no, no, no I never can say goodbye Ev'ry time I think I've had enough And start heading for the door There's a very strange vibration Piercing me right to the core It says turn around you fool You know you love her more and more Tell me why is it so Don't wanna let you go I never can say goodbye, girl Don't wanna let you go I never can say goodbye No, no, no, no I never can say goodbye No, no, no, no I never can say goodbye I keep thinkin' that our problems Soon are all gonna work out But there's that same unhappy feelin' That anguish, there's that doubt It's that same old dizzy hang up Can't do with you or without
