Neil Sedaka (born March 13, 1939) is an American pop/rock singer, pianist, composer and record producer. Since his music career began in 1957, he has sold millions of records as an artist and has written or co-written over 500 songs for himself and others, collaborating mostly with lyricists Howard Greenfield and Phil Cody.
Sedaka was born in Brooklyn, New York. His father, Mac Sedaka, was a taxi driver and a Sephardi Jew of Turkish origin ("Sedaka" and "Sadaka" are variants of "tzedakah", which translates in both Hebrew and Arabic as the word charity). Neil's mother, Eleanor (née Appel), was an Ashkenazi Jew of Polish/Russian origin. Neil's grandparents came to the United States from Constantinople, then the capital of Ottoman Turkey, in 1910. He grew up in Brighton Beach, on the shore of the Atlantic Ocean. Sedaka is a cousin of the late singer Eydie Gormé.
He demonstrated musical aptitude in his second-grade choral class, and when his teacher sent a note home suggesting he take piano lessons, his mother took a part-time job in an Abraham & Straus department store for six months to pay for a second-hand upright. In 1947, he auditioned successfully for a piano scholarship to the Juilliard School of Music's Preparatory Division for Children, which he attended on Saturdays. His mother wanted him to become a renowned classical pianist like the contemporary of the day, Van Cliburn, but Sedaka was discovering pop music. When Sedaka was 13, a neighbor heard him playing and introduced him to her 16-year-old son, Howard Greenfield, an aspiring poet and lyricist. They became two of the legendary Brill Building's composers.
Rock with Neil Sedaka or just Neil Sedaka is the first major solo album of Neil Sedaka released in 1959 after two 1958 albums under the titles Neil Sedaka and The Tokens and Neil Sedaka and The Tokens and Coins. The album was released on RCA and was produced by Al Nevins. The album contains 12 songs, all of them co-written by Sedaka and his friend Howard Greenfield. Two of the songs became successful singles for Sedaka from the album, namely "The Diary", his debut single that was a hit, reaching No. 14 on the US Billboard charts, and "I Go Ape", a single that was relatively successful in the United States reaching No. 42, but did far better in the UK Singles Chart, making it up to No. 9 and his debut single in the United Kingdom.
All songs were composed by Neil Sedaka and Howard Greenfield.
"Love Will Keep Us Together" is a popular song written by Neil Sedaka and Howard Greenfield, first recorded by Sedaka himself. Captain & Tennille's cover version, with instrumental backing by L.A. session musicians from the Wrecking Crew was a worldwide hit in 1975.
The song first appeared on Neil Sedaka's 1973 album The Tra-La Days Are Over which did not have a U.S. release, his version of the song making its U.S. album debut on the 1974 compilation album Sedaka's Back. It was released as a single in France, however, on the Polydor label. In West Germany, Sedaka's original was also included as the B-side of his 1976 hit, "Love in the Shadows."
"Love Will Keep Us Together" had its first single release via a UK recording by Mac and Katie Kissoon on September 28, 1973, but it failed to chart. This version also failed to chart in its U.S. release in February 1974; however, it did become the first hit version of "Love Will Keep Us Together" by virtue of charting in the Netherlands in the autumn of 1973, peaking at #12 that December.
Love Will Keep Us Together was the first release by the duo Captain & Tennille. It was released in 1975 by A&M Records in both stereo (SP-4552) and CD-4 quadraphonic (QU-54552) versions. The album would peak at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 album chart, while the title song, Love Will Keep Us Together, won the Grammy Award for Record Of The Year and was nominated for Song Of The Year.
The cover of the album features a photo of Toni Tennille and Daryl Dragon sitting with two of their bulldogs.
The title song from the album, "Love Will Keep Us Together", was written by Neil Sedaka and Howard Greenfield, first appearing on Sedaka's 1973 LP The Tra-La Days Are Over.
The Captain & Tennille cover (A&M 1672-S b/w "Gentle Stranger") would reach No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the week ending June 21, 1975. It spent four weeks at number one and was ranked by Billboard as the number one single of the year, and also spent one week at number one on the Adult Contemporary chart. "The Way I Want To Touch You" (A&M 1725 b/w "Broddy Bounce") became another million-seller, reaching #4 on the Hot 100 and topping the AC chart for two weeks. Both tracks were also top 40 hits in the U.K. although they did not replicate their Stateside success there.

Away... away
I just can't wait to fall asleep
I can't wait for night each day
'Cause when the lights are low
No matter where you go,
You're only forty winks
Away... away
No matter how far you may be,
Believe me darling when I say,
The oceans in between
I cross them on a dream
'Cause you're just forty winks
Away... away
There's a land of enchantment
Just beyond my pillowcase,
And I go there 'cause I know there
I'll be in your sweet embrace.
So till you come back home again,
Until you're in my arms to stay,
It's kinda nice to know,
I turn the lights down low,
And you're just forty winks
Away... away...
[Fade out]
