The Madness of King Ludwig II
Ludwig II of Bavaria was, by any standard, eccentric. He built fairy-tale castles in the nineteenth century, had imaginary conversations with Marie Antoinette, and liked poetry more than politicians. But whether he was actually mad was a mystery, as were the circumstances of his death. And his legacy has long outlived him. The History Guy recalls the mystery and tragedy of Mad King Ludwig.

Ludwig I of Bavaria: Art, Architecture, and Revolutions
Ludwig I was a great art-lover, and much like his grandson Ludwig II, he would leave an impressive architectural legacy behind. He was on a quest to turn Munich into one of the great cultural hubs of Europe, erecting a large number of museums, a new university and national library etc. He also glorified his native Bavaria and Germany as a whole through great monuments like the Walhalla and the Hall of Liberation. Although originally quite liberal, he would soon try to centralize power to himself, and his reign would be marked by controversy and the threat of revolution.

Neuschwanstein: King Ludwig‘s dream castle and its secrets | History Stories Special
No other place is as charged with myths, legend and secrets than Neuschwanstein Castle. The childhood dream of a young prince became the most exciting building project in the world, when
the foundation stone of the castle was laid on September 5, 1869. Today, Bavaria's most famous building is inextricably linked to the fate of its builder, King Ludwig II. "The sudden death of the king gave the castle a brilliant start in its career as a tourist attraction," says Ludwig, Prince of Bavaria, a relative of the fairy-tale king. "It's a built fantasy. Bavarian Kings
The House of Wittelsbach ruled Bavaria for centuries. It became an Electorate of the Holy Roman Empire under Maximilian I who allied with Emperor Ferdinand II in the 30 Years War. After the French Revolutionary Wars brought down the Holy Roman Empire and given that Bavaria had been a long-time ally of France Napoleon raised the country to a kingdom under Maximilian IV Joseph who became King Maximilian I of Bavaria in 1806. The monarchy lasted until the fall of the 2nd German Empire in 1918 when leftist revolutions brought down King Ludwig III. Today the heir to the throne is titled as "Duke of Bavaria".

Ferdinand Maria of Bavaria: Recovery from War
While his father had led Bavaria into The Thirty Years' War, Ferdinand Maria would make sure that this was followed by thirty years of peace. He carefully balanced his relations between the Habsburgs and the French, giving him and his country time to recover from the previous conflict. Thanks to Ferdinand's skillful development of the economy, the country soon grew quite wealthy, allowing him to spend the excess money on great art and building projects. In this respect, he was greatly helped by his wife, Henriette Adelaide, who brought with her the Italian Baroque from her native Savoy.

You're not in a house, you're in a dream."
Even when it was built, the castle seems to have fallen out of time. It's the perfect symbiosis of high-tech and medieval. The feeling of not being understood and accepted caused the monarch to slip into ever more enraptured dream worlds. Neuschwanstein became his last refuge.
King Ludwig II. was denied the opportunity to live in his palace in its completed state. On June 12, 1886, he was arrested. The mysterious death of the King in Lake Starnberg a few days later makes the "fairytale king" legend. Six weeks after his death, the castle was opened to visitors, partly to prove how "crazy" the king was.
For decades, the castle lay dormant. It survived two world wars unscathed, misused by the Nazis during the Third Reich as a warehouse for looted art. At the end of the Second World War, US troops reached Neuschwanstein. The castle finds itself on the list of must see sights for GIs stationed in Germany. And so photos of the Bavarian dream castle enter the living rooms of many Americans. On this History Stories special, we reveal the secrets of the castle that became a symbol for a different Germany and immortalized in Disney's Sleeping Beauty.
