Loudspeaker enclosure
A loudspeaker enclosure or loudspeaker cabinet is an enclosure in which speaker drivers and associated electronic hardware, such as crossover circuits and, in some cases, amplifiers, are mounted. Enclosures may range in design from simple, rectangular particle-board boxes to very complex cabinets that incorporate composite materials, internal baffles, horns, ports and acoustic insulation.
The primary role of the enclosure is to prevent sound waves generated by the rearward-facing surface of the diaphragm of an open speaker driver interacting with sound waves generated at the front of the speaker driver. Because the forward- and rearward-generated sounds are out of phase with each other, any interaction between the two in the listening space creates a distortion of the original signal as it was intended to be reproduced. Additionally, because they would travel different paths through the listening space, the sound waves would arrive at the listener's position at slightly different times, introducing echo and reverberation effects not part of the original sound.

Loudspeaker
A loudspeaker (or loud-speaker or speaker) is an electroacoustic transducer; a device which converts an electrical audio signal into a corresponding sound. The first primitive loudspeakers were invented during the development of telephone systems in the late 1800s, but electronic amplification by vacuum tube beginning around 1912 made loudspeakers truly practical. By the 1920s they were used in radios, phonographs, public address systems and theatre sound systems for talking motion pictures.
The most widely used type of speaker today is the dynamic speaker, invented in 1925 by Edward W. Kellogg and Chester W. Rice. The dynamic speaker operates on the same basic principle as a dynamic microphone, but in reverse, to produce sound from an electrical signal. When an alternating current electrical audio signal is applied to its voice coil, a coil of wire suspended in a circular gap between the poles of a permanent magnet, the coil is forced to move rapidly back and forth due to Faraday's law of induction, which causes a diaphragm (usually conically shaped) attached to the coil to move back and forth, pushing on the air to create sound waves. Besides this most common method, there are several alternative technologies that can be used to convert an electrical signal into sound. The sound source (e.g., a sound recording or a microphone) must be amplified with an amplifier before the signal is sent to the speaker.

Cabinet of the United Kingdom
The Cabinet of the United Kingdom is the collective decision-making body of Her Majesty's Government of the United Kingdom, composed of the Prime Minister and some 21 Cabinet ministers, the most senior of the government ministers.
Ministers of the Crown, and especially Cabinet ministers, are selected primarily from the elected members of House of Commons, and also from the House of Lords, by the Prime Minister. Cabinet ministers are heads of government departments, mostly with the office of "Secretary of State for [function, e.g. Defence]". The collective co-ordinating function of the Cabinet is reinforced by the statutory position that all the Secretaries of State jointly hold the same office, and can exercise the same powers.
The Cabinet is the ultimate decision-making body of the executive within the Westminster system of government in traditional constitutional theory. The Cabinet (professional wrestling)
The Cabinet was a professional wrestling stable that was part of World Wrestling Entertainment's (WWE) SmackDown brand. It was created by John "Bradshaw" Layfield (JBL) shortly after he won the WWE Championship at The Great American Bash in 2004.
The future of the Cabinet seemed to be in doubt in mid-2005 after the firing of Amy Weber and the resignation of the Basham Brothers (who were then split in the WWE draft). The stable had dwindled down to just JBL and Orlando Jordan. With both men seemingly concentrating on their own singles careers, it seemed like the end of the Cabinet, but on the September 16, 2005 edition of SmackDown, after JBL lost to Rey Mysterio, he hired spin doctor Jillian Hall in order to fix his career. Though seemingly adding a publicist to the stable, there was no mention of the Cabinet until December 9, 2005, when Jordan assisted JBL in a match. This led to General Manager Theodore Long announcing that JBL and Jordan would team up for a match at the end of the night.

Is a Deep Speaker Box Better? Tested with Surprising Results
The traditional wisdom says that if the driver is close to the back panel of the speaker box, you'll get very obvious reflections back through the cone that colour the sound. While this is now widely accepted as true, I thought it would be interesting to actually test it and see first-hand how much of an impact it has. The two boxes are nearly identical internal volume of 12 liters (the deep box is very slightly bigger). That volume works best for the driver I'm using for the test, a Seas coax H1144. The deep box is 8" from the back of the front baffle to the inside face of the back of the box, while the shallow box is 4" deep. Transmission Line Speakers are a Trap
A pure transmission line speaker will completely absorb the back-wave from the driver, making it behave like an infinite baffle. The advantage an infinite baffle gives is that there's no cancellation from the output from the front of the driver and the output from the back of the driver. The output from the back is thrown away and only the output from the front is used. In reality, this is almost impossible to do fully, and that's especially true where a speaker box is concerned. You'll never be able to absorb 100% of the back-wave (with current tech), so a compromise is reached in the "transmission line" speaker by using some of the back-wave energy for the overall output. But at some point the idea started that bracing alone was better, just using a lot more of it. Guys were still doing the traditional bracing and damping (like me), but you also started seeing these bracing only builds happening. The traditional wisdom says that if the driver is close to the back panel of the speaker box, you'll get very obvious reflections back through the cone that colour the sound. While this is now widely accepted as true, I thought it would be interesting to actually test it and see first-hand how much of an impact it has.
The two boxes are nearly identical internal volume of 12 liters (the deep box is very slightly bigger). That volume works best for the driver I'm using for the test, a Seas coax H1144.
The deep box is 8" from the back of the front baffle to the inside face of the back of the box, while the shallow box is 4" deep. I used the same driver (I only have one of these), crossover and test setup for each box. The shallow box is just deep enough for the driver to fit - the back is just 1/4" from the back panel.
Measured first without stuffing, the tall shallow box shows a disturbance in the 300Hz range. This can be the "back through the driver" reflection mentioned above or it can be a standing wave.
Adding stuffing (I used the same piece of rockwool in each box) shows no significant change for the deep box, but has smoothed out that 300Hz wiggle in the shallow box, proving that it is a standing wave problem.
The standing wave happens up in the shallow box because it is taller and the distance from top to bottom is great enough to support a standing wave in that 300Hz region. The rockwool is damping material that absorbs sound energy, breaking up that standing wave.
Tangentially, this also demonstrates that standing waves are only a problem when the box is big enough inside to support a standing wave in the lower midrange frequencies. Note that the deep box shows no improvement when stuffed, indicating that there are no standing waves of any significance to damp.
So making a small speaker box with rounded or angled sides won't be effective for preventing standing waves, when they wouldn't be there to begin with.
Finally a listening test using both boxes. The mic is set up around 20" from the speaker on tweeter axis for both boxes in my listening room.
I deliberately withheld which box is which, leaving you to decide based on listening only. Give it a try and leave a comment, and I'll reveal the results in a future video.

A pure transmission line speaker will completely absorb the back-wave from the driver, making it behave like an infinite baffle. The advantage an infinite baffle gives is that there's no cancellation from the output from the front of the driver and the output from the back of the driver. The output from the back is thrown away and only the output from the front is used.
In reality, this is almost impossible to do fully, and that's especially true where a speaker box is concerned. You'll never be able to absorb 100% of the back-wave (with current tech), so a compromise is reached in the "transmission line" speaker by using some of the back-wave energy for the overall output. This is done by making the pipe length, damping and taper so that it channels the back-wave out and it is now in phase with the front-wave. This extra energy adds to the front-wave, boosting output.
The pipe is tuned so that by the time the back-wave travels through it, it will have shifted in phase to match the output from the front. And while it seems like it would be relatively easy to do that, designing and constructing a box to hold that pipe is more complex than nearly ever other type of speaker. And in my opinion it's questionable whether the results are better than a much less complex (and typically much smaller) ported box.
But even when he know this, that doesn't stop the DIY speaker builder from taking a crack at it. And I have to admit that while thinking about the subject for this video, I find myself drawn to the idea again.
The one shown in the video thumbnail was very quickly drawn for this video. It shows the typical implementation of the folded, tapered duct with the output opening on the front. Along with this the duct would have to be stuffed with damping material to tune the response and reduce the ripples the long pipe adds to the response. These ripples extend up throughout the effective frequency range of the driver and can be difficult to get rid of. And I'm not unconvinced that the ripples are not what people like about these speakers - that extra "stuff" that's not there in other designs.

NOTE: This is to clear up some confusion over what I meant about bracing and damping:
Speaker building was always bracing and damping. But at some point the idea started that bracing alone was better, just using a lot more of it. Guys were still doing the traditional bracing and damping (like me), but you also started seeing these bracing only builds happening. The idea was to drive up the panel resonance high enough so that it wouldn't be excited and therefore wouldn't be a problem
I'm speaking 100% from a DIY standpoint, not from what the major manufacturers were doing.
Will making the entire box from the same material make a difference? Possibly, but I did what I could to take the rest of the box out of the measurement. For example the box was clamped down to my very heavy and stable workbench to keep it as stationary as possible, and help restrict the measurement to the panel itself. Yes the other panels were still vibrating and in turn that can affect the panel being tested, but it's the same for each of the different panels.
Each panel was exactly the same size - 8-1/2" x 12" with the screw holes in exactly the same places.
Why 30Hz to 2000Hz? I did some "warmup" testing prior to the measurements I made to determine the best range that shows the most relevant data. 30Hz because the speaker I used doesn't have significant output below 30Hz.
I used my ACH-01 accelerometer connected to REW to run the measurements. I made a special preamp for that accelerometer in this video: https://youtu.be/o1Fctgs8CcQ
My conclusions are that the material used is not a significant factor in how the speaker will sound. As long as what you are working with is of reasonable quality, you should not be able to hear the difference.
You may be able to imagine you hear the difference, though, and the human psyche is a powerful thing to overcome. If you believe MDF sounds dull and sluggish, and Baltic birch plywood sounds lively and fast, then it'll be very difficult to get past that and you should use the one you think will sound best.
As for bracing vs damping, I think both are valid. Use bracing to reduce panel size so that the damping will be more effective. The rationale of those that prefer bracing alone is that the damping "smears" the response. Much like above, it'll be hard to get past this idea if it's what you believe, so best to go with what you think is better way.

The traditional wisdom says that if the driver is close to the back panel of the speaker box, you'll get very obvious reflections back through the cone that colour the sound. While this is now widely accepted as true, I thought it would be interesting to actually test it and see first-hand how much of an impact it has.
The two boxes are nearly identical internal volume of 12 liters (the deep box is very slightly bigger). That volume works best for the driver I'm using for the test, a Seas coax H1144.
The deep box is 8" from the back of the front baffle to the inside face of the back of the box, while the shallow box is 4" deep. I used the same driver (I only have one of these), crossover and test setup for each box. The shallow box is just deep enough for the driver to fit - the back is just 1/4" from the back panel.
Measured first without stuffing, the tall shallow box shows a disturbance in the 300Hz range. This can be the "back through the driver" reflection mentioned above or it can be a standing wave.
Adding stuffing (I used the same piece of rockwool in each box) shows no significant change for the deep box, but has smoothed out that 300Hz wiggle in the shallow box, proving that it is a standing wave problem.
The standing wave happens up in the shallow box because it is taller and the distance from top to bottom is great enough to support a standing wave in that 300Hz region. The rockwool is damping material that absorbs sound energy, breaking up that standing wave.
Tangentially, this also demonstrates that standing waves are only a problem when the box is big enough inside to support a standing wave in the lower midrange frequencies. Note that the deep box shows no improvement when stuffed, indicating that there are no standing waves of any significance to damp.
So making a small speaker box with rounded or angled sides won't be effective for preventing standing waves, when they wouldn't be there to begin with.
Finally a listening test using both boxes. The mic is set up around 20" from the speaker on tweeter axis for both boxes in my listening room.
I deliberately withheld which box is which, leaving you to decide based on listening only. Give it a try and leave a comment, and I'll reveal the results in a future video.

A pure transmission line speaker will completely absorb the back-wave from the driver, making it behave like an infinite baffle. The advantage an infinite baffle gives is that there's no cancellation from the output from the front of the driver and the output from the back of the driver. The output from the back is thrown away and only the output from the front is used.
In reality, this is almost impossible to do fully, and that's especially true where a speaker box is concerned. You'll never be able to absorb 100% of the back-wave (with current tech), so a compromise is reached in the "transmission line" speaker by using some of the back-wave energy for the overall output. This is done by making the pipe length, damping and taper so that it channels the back-wave out and it is now in phase with the front-wave. This extra energy adds to the front-wave, boosting output.
The pipe is tuned so that by the time the back-wave travels through it, it will have shifted in phase to match the output from the front. And while it seems like it would be relatively easy to do that, designing and constructing a box to hold that pipe is more complex than nearly ever other type of speaker. And in my opinion it's questionable whether the results are better than a much less complex (and typically much smaller) ported box.
But even when he know this, that doesn't stop the DIY speaker builder from taking a crack at it. And I have to admit that while thinking about the subject for this video, I find myself drawn to the idea again.
The one shown in the video thumbnail was very quickly drawn for this video. It shows the typical implementation of the folded, tapered duct with the output opening on the front. Along with this the duct would have to be stuffed with damping material to tune the response and reduce the ripples the long pipe adds to the response. These ripples extend up throughout the effective frequency range of the driver and can be difficult to get rid of. And I'm not unconvinced that the ripples are not what people like about these speakers - that extra "stuff" that's not there in other designs.

NOTE: This is to clear up some confusion over what I meant about bracing and damping:
Speaker building was always bracing and damping. But at some point the idea started that bracing alone was better, just using a lot more of it. Guys were still doing the traditional bracing and damping (like me), but you also started seeing these bracing only builds happening. The idea was to drive up the panel resonance high enough so that it wouldn't be excited and therefore wouldn't be a problem
I'm speaking 100% from a DIY standpoint, not from what the major manufacturers were doing.
Will making the entire box from the same material make a difference? Possibly, but I did what I could to take the rest of the box out of the measurement. For example the box was clamped down to my very heavy and stable workbench to keep it as stationary as possible, and help restrict the measurement to the panel itself. Yes the other panels were still vibrating and in turn that can affect the panel being tested, but it's the same for each of the different panels.
Each panel was exactly the same size - 8-1/2" x 12" with the screw holes in exactly the same places.
Why 30Hz to 2000Hz? I did some "warmup" testing prior to the measurements I made to determine the best range that shows the most relevant data. 30Hz because the speaker I used doesn't have significant output below 30Hz.
I used my ACH-01 accelerometer connected to REW to run the measurements. I made a special preamp for that accelerometer in this video: https://youtu.be/o1Fctgs8CcQ
My conclusions are that the material used is not a significant factor in how the speaker will sound. As long as what you are working with is of reasonable quality, you should not be able to hear the difference.
You may be able to imagine you hear the difference, though, and the human psyche is a powerful thing to overcome. If you believe MDF sounds dull and sluggish, and Baltic birch plywood sounds lively and fast, then it'll be very difficult to get past that and you should use the one you think will sound best.
As for bracing vs damping, I think both are valid. Use bracing to reduce panel size so that the damping will be more effective. The rationale of those that prefer bracing alone is that the damping "smears" the response. Much like above, it'll be hard to get past this idea if it's what you believe, so best to go with what you think is better way.

Loudspeaker enclosure
A loudspeaker enclosure or loudspeaker cabinet is an enclosure in which speaker drivers and associated electronic hardware, such as crossover circuits and, in some cases, amplifiers, are mounted. Enclosures may range in design from simple, rectangular particle-board boxes to very complex cabinets that incorporate composite materials, internal baffles, horns, ports and acoustic insulation.
The primary role of the enclosure is to prevent sound waves generated by the rearward-facing surface of the diaphragm of an open speaker driver interacting with sound waves generated at the front of the speaker driver. Because the forward- and rearward-generated sounds are out of phase with each other, any interaction between the two in the listening space creates a distortion of the original signal as it was intended to be reproduced. Additionally, because they would travel different paths through the listening space, the sound waves would arrive at the listener's position at slightly different times, introducing echo and reverberation effects not part of the original sound.
