Meet your Concertmaster: Martin Chalifour
Martin Chalifour began his tenure as Principal Concertmaster of the Los Angeles Philharmonic in 1995. A native of Canada, he graduated with honors from the Montreal Conservatory at the age of 18 and then moved to Philadelphia to pursue studies at the Curtis Institute of Music. Apart from his Philharmonic duties he maintains an active solo career, playing a diverse repertoire ranging from baroque to contemporary commissions.

🎻 Crazy In Love (Beyoncé) — San Francisco Symphony — Live — 2024
The San Francisco Symphony performs an arrangement of the Beyoncé song "Crazy In Love," live in concert at Davies Symphony Hall on March 9, 2024. The piece, conducted and arranged by Daniel Bartholomew-Poyser, was presented as part of the symphony's children's concert series, Music For Families. Crazy In Love originally appeared on Beyoncé debut studio album, Dangerously in Love (2003), and featured her future husband, Jay-Z. Daniel Bartholomew-Poyser is a Canadian composer, arranger, and the San Francisco Symphony's Resident Conductor of Engagement and Education. The Music For Families series is designed to introduce children to the experience of symphonic performance. It is aimed at children ages 5-12, their families, and the "young at heart."

A Window Into the National Take a Stand Festival (2017)
The National Take a Stand Festival Orchestra concert on July 22, 2017, at Walt Disney Concert Hall, was the culminating event of an 8-day festival where 101 young musicians from 34 El Sistema -inspired programs learned from a world-class faculty of master teaching artists.
During the festival, participants attended Master classes and private lessons with LA Phil musicians, engaged in peer mentorship, and participated in chamber-music ensembles as well as full-orchestra rehearsals. The festival coincided with the Take a Stand Symposium, which gathered more than 350 leaders, teachers, researchers, and key stakeholders from around the world with a vested interest in the El Sistema movement and progressive practices in music education.

A passionate communicator, Daniel Bartholomew-Poyser brings clarity and meaning to the concert hall, fostering deep connections between audiences and performers. He is concurrently Resident Conductor of Engagement and Education of the San Francisco Symphony, Barrett Principal Education Conductor and Community Ambassador of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Artist-in-Residence and Community Ambassador of Symphony Nova Scotia, and Principal Youth Conductor and Artistic Partner of Canada's National Arts Centre Orchestra. He served as assistant conductor of the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony and associate conductor of the Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra. Mr. Bartholomew-Poyser has performed with the Houston Symphony, Detroit Symphony, National Symphony, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Carnegie Hall Link-Up Orchestra, Canadian Opera Company, Vancouver Symphony, Edmonton Symphony, Calgary Philharmonic, Chicago Philharmonic, Windsor Symphony, London Sinfonia, was cover conductor with the Washington National Opera in 2020, and was music director of the Kennedy Center Summer Music Institute in 2022 and 2023.
In the 2023–24 season, Mr. Bartholomew-Poyser debuts with the New York Philharmonic and New Jersey Symphony in addition to making his debut at the Hollywood Bowl with the Los Angeles Philharmonic in an all-Tchaikovsky program. Host of Canadian Broadcasting Corporation’s weekly radio show Centre Stage, he also serves on the Board of the Conductor’s Retreat at Medomak, headquartered in Michigan. He is the subject of a multi award-winning CBC documentary Disruptor Conductor, focusing on his efforts to extend the boundaries of the orchestral music world through concerts for neurodiverse, incarcerated, African diaspora, and LGBTQ2S+ populations.
Daniel Bartholomew-Poyser earned a Bachelor of Music Performance and Education from the University of Calgary and a Master of Philosophy in Performance from the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, England.

He is the subject of a multi award-winning CBC documentary Disruptor Conductor, focusing on his efforts to extend the boundaries of the orchestral music world through concerts for neurodiverse, incarcerated, African diaspora, and LGBTQ2S+ populations.
Daniel Bartholomew-Poyser earned a Bachelor of Music Performance and Education from the University of Calgary and a Master of Philosophy in Performance from the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, England.

The National Take a Stand Festival Orchestra concert on July 22, 2017, at Walt Disney Concert Hall, was the culminating event of an 8-day festival where 101 young musicians from 34 El Sistema -inspired programs learned from a world-class faculty of master teaching artists.
During the festival, participants attended Master classes and private lessons with LA Phil musicians, engaged in peer mentorship, and participated in chamber-music ensembles as well as full-orchestra rehearsals. The festival coincided with the Take a Stand Symposium, which gathered more than 350 leaders, teachers, researchers, and key stakeholders from around the world with a vested interest in the El Sistema movement and progressive practices in music education.
Under the direction of LA Phil Music & Artistic Director Gustavo Dudamel and Hollywood Bowl Orchestra Principal Conductor Thomas Wilkins, the first orchestra of its kind performed a concert featuring works by Coleridge-Taylor, Tchaikovsky, and Bernstein along with original videos created over the course of the festival to an audience of Take a Stand attendees, friends, families and supporters.
