LMS - General Repair - 1938 - LMS Railway film
LMS General Repair, 1938. This film is a fascinating glimpse into the world of a steam locomotive servicing facility.
LMS Jubilee class no. 5605 'Cyprus', the featured locomotive in this film, was built in 1935 and eventually scrapped in 1964 as part of the phasing out of steam traction on British railways.
In the film, we follow the locomotive from first inspection through complete dismantling, lifting of the frame from the wheels, detaching of the boiler, inspection of parts, replacement and repair and then final reassembly. When the completed locomotive is ready to leave the factory it is taken to the paint shop to emerge almost as a new machine.
As a further point of interest and a major part of the history of the locomotive, on 18 May 1948, no. 5605 and another Jubilee, hauling the...

Sometimes, locomotives can run into trouble early on. Whether it be minor or major design faults, engines of all kinds are rarely perfect from the start. Beattie Well Tanks: The Basics
When retired in 1962, the Beattie Well Tanks were the oldest designs - but not locomotives - still in use on BR (British Railways). Designed by Joseph Hamilton Beattie and built in batches from 1863 to 1875, they are a classic example of mid-Victorian locomotive design.

5 Preserved Locomotives (That Were Scrapped Anyway) | History in the Dark
It seems counterintuitive to say, but on occasion a locomotive that has been placed into preservation still winds up scrapped regardless of this. "The North British Atlantic, later known as NBR Class H, and then as LNER Class C11 was a class of 4-4-2 steam locomotive of the North British Railway. The class was designed by William P. Reid, Locomotive Superintendent of the NBR, and entered service under his direction. They were the heaviest, longest, and most powerful (by tractive effort) locomotives ever employed on the North British Railway."

It was sold to the Lake States Steam Association in 1985, and it was stored at the Nicolet Badger Northern Railroad in Laona, Wisconsin. In 2007, it was sold to the Mount Hood Tourist Railroad in Oregon to pull excursions there. Just a few months later, it was sold again to Rio Grande Scenic Railroad to pull more excursions between Alamosa and La Veta, Colorado until 2013. In 2021, No. 18 was purchased by the Maguire Foundation, and it was moved to Boyertown, Pennsylvania to be operated by the Colebrookdale Railroad Preservation Trust."

It seems counterintuitive to say, but on occasion a locomotive that has been placed into preservation still winds up scrapped regardless of this. Heritage railways don't always have the means or resources to hold on to every piece of history they get their hands on. There are a lot of reasons for this to happen, not always great ones, but reasons none-the-less. Here's five times where preserved locomotives were scrapped.
0:00 - Intro
0:59 - Duluth, Missabe & Iron Range 2-8-8-4 "Yellowstone" 221
3:49 - Moel Tryfan
6:21 - Great Western Railway North Star and Lord of the Isles
8:54 - Brooklyn Eastern District Terminal 15
12:55 - NBR/LNER North British Atlantic Midlothian
"The Duluth, Missabe and Iron Range Railway hauled iron ore in Minnesota. Iron ore is heavy and the DM&IR operated long trains of ore cars, requiring maximum power. These locomotives were based upon ten 2-8-8-2s that Baldwin had built in the 1930s for the Western Pacific Railroad. The need for a larger, coal-burning firebox and a longer, all-weather cab led to the use of a four-wheel trailing truck, giving them the "Yellowstone" wheel arrangement."
"Moel Tryfan was a narrow gauge steam locomotive built for use on the North Wales Narrow Gauge Railways (NWNGRs) in 1874/5. The locomotive was an 0-6-4T single Fairlie locomotive built by the Vulcan Foundry near Manchester. It spent its entire working life on the NWNGRs and its successors the Welsh Highland Railway (WHR) and the Ffestiniog Railway (FfR)."
"The Great Western Railway (GWR) Star Class of 2-2-2 broad gauge steam locomotives were used for passenger train work. Designed by Robert Stephenson, the class was introduced into service between November 1838 and November 1841, and withdrawn between April 1864 and September 1871."

"B.E.D.T. #15 was built to run on the Brooklyn Eastern District Terminal, a rail-marine terminal in Brooklyn, New York. After the railway was modernized with diesel locomotives, it was moved to the Southern Appalachian Railway in 1965. The Southern Appalachian Railway ran from Burnsville, North Carolina to Erwin, Tennessee. It worked there until 1975, when it was moved to the Toledo, Lake Erie and Western Railway in Grand Rapids, Ohio, were it was placed on static display for the next twenty-three years."
"The North British Atlantic, later known as NBR Class H, and then as LNER Class C11 was a class of 4-4-2 steam locomotive of the North British Railway. The class was designed by William P. They were the heaviest, longest, and most powerful (by tractive effort) locomotives ever employed on the North British Railway."

https://wn.com/5_Preserved_Locomotives_(That_Were_Scrapped_Anyway)_|_History_In_The_Dark
