Newport (formerly known as Pavonia – Newport, Pavonia, or Erie) is a PATH station located on Town Square Place (formerly Pavonia Avenue) at the corner of Washington Boulevard in Newport, Jersey City, New Jersey.
History
The station was opened on August 2, 1909 as part of the Hudson and Manhattan Railroad (H&M), originally constructed to connect to the Erie Railroad's Pavonia Terminal. The capitals of the station's columns are adorned with the "E", and recall its original name, Erie. After the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey 1960s takeover of the system, the station was renamed Pavonia, or Pavonia Avenue, itself named for the 17th New Netherland settlement of Pavonia. In 1988, the station became known as Pavonia/Newport to reflect the re-development of the former railyards along the banks of the Hudson River to residential, retail, and recreational uses as Newport. In 2010, the name became Newport.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 0.3 square miles (0.78km2), all land.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 1,506 people, 666 households, and 402 families residing in the borough. The population density was 4,604.8 people per square mile (1,762.0/km²). There were 743 housing units at an average density of 2,271.8 per square mile (869.3/km²). The racial makeup of the borough was 98.54% White, 0.13% African American, 0.33% Native American, 0.07% Asian, 0.27% from other races, and 0.66% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.66% of the population.
Newport is a small town located in Perry County, Pennsylvania nestled along the Juniata River. Settlers first arrived here in the 1760s. It was originally known as Ryder’s Ferry, the site of an early ferry on the Juniata River and was later named Newport after the canal was built. Grist mills became the first industry of the hamlet, thanks in part to river transportation to distant markets. The Pennsylvania Canal (1829) and the Pennsylvania Railroad (1849) accelerated economic development. From the Civil War into the 1920s, numerous industries produced iron, tannery products, bricks, textiles and lumber, and workers serviced canal boats, trains, and supported area agriculture. Newport was later established as a Borough in 1840.

10 Places in Pennsylvania You Should NEVER Move To
Move to these places and you're gonna regret it big time!
If you were going to make a list of places to NOT to move to in Pennsylvania, you’d have a lot to choose from. Many people wouldn’t want to live on a farm, or in smallish communities where there isn’t even electricity. Or in an old beat up former coal mining town where the local economy is horrible. Many of us wouldn’t want to live in a big inner city where violence and homelessness rules the day.

Newport was later established as a Borough in 1840.
Today, Newport is on the National Register of Historic Places, celebrating the domestic and business architecture of the 19th Century. The downtown square is a charming venue for eateries and specialty shops. The Borough of Newport is just 25 miles northwest of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania’s capital, and within close proximity to US Routes 22/322 a primary transportation corridor in the County. Quality schools, civic organizations, a public library, parks, and annual festivals contribute to a delightful small town and rural environment that continues to attract young families and retirees to a proud community now over 250 years old.
Newport was the eastern end of the Newport and Shermans Valley Railroad. There was a freight yard where railcars and cargo could be transferred to standard gauge. Newport once had a large tannery that operated from the second half of the 19th century until the early part of the 20th. The town playground and youth baseball fields now occupy the site.
Notable people from Newport,Pa include:
Billy Cox ,Major League Baseball infielder. The baseball field is named after him. He played third base for the Pittsburgh Pirates, Brooklyn Dodgers and Baltimore Orioles in the 1940s and 50s.
John W. Herrick,Engineer who invented the airbag.
Thomas Markle,Lighting director and father of Meghan, Duchess of Sussex.

You could actually choose many MANY places in Pennsylvania that would be a bad choice for a newcomer. Long time Pennsylvania residents could rattle off at least 20 places they wouldn’t want to live in themselves. And, in case you didn’t know, migration TO the Keystone State stopped being positive a long while ago.
Anyways, because everyone likes lists in tens, we did a lot of homework to bring you a list of only 10 places in Pennsylvania where you should NEVER move, even though there’s way more than that.
We're going to talk about places in Pittsburgh, near Philadelphia and near Scranton. Places like McKeesport, Chester, Reading and more!

I see you've got some time to waste You wish your dreams away Why don't you get that gun It could be so much fun We're biding our time together We're trying but it doesn't matter Because we're living in We're living in Look what progressions done Just look at what it's become They made things happen fast but never made them last We're biding our time together We're trying but it doesn't matter Because we're living in We're living in Too many problems in my life I wish they'd all just get away Too many problems in my world
