An arch bridge is a bridge with abutments at each end shaped as a curved arch. Arch bridges work by transferring the weight of the bridge and its loads partially into a horizontal thrust restrained by the abutments at either side. A viaduct (a long bridge) may be made from a series of arches, although other more economical structures are typically used today.
Although true arches were already known by the Etruscans and ancient Greeks, the Romans were - as with the vault and the dome - the first to fully realize the potential of arches for bridge construction. A list of Roman bridges compiled by the engineer Colin O'Connor features 330 Roman stone bridges for traffic, 34 Roman timber bridges and 54 Roman aqueduct bridges, a substantial part still standing and even used to carry vehicles. A more complete survey by the Italian scholar Vittorio Galliazzo found 931 Roman bridges, mostly of stone, in as many as 26 different countries (including former Yugoslavia).
This list of the longest arch bridge spans ranks the world's arch bridges by the length of their main span. The length of the main span is the most common way to rank bridges as it usually correlates with the engineering complexity involved in designing and constructing the bridge. If one bridge has a longer span than another it does not necessarily mean that the bridge is longer from shore to shore or from abutment to abutment.

Every Bridge For Every Situation, Explained By an Engineer | A World of Difference | WIRED
Dr. Nehemiah Mabry, PE, knows a lot about bridges. Nehemiah is a structural engineer and an educator; and he builds bridges for a living. Dr. Mabry sits down with WIRED to talk about all different kinds of bridges from around the globe. What's the difference between a cable-stayed bridge and a suspension bridge? Are bridges in China different from bridges in the United States? Why do they decide to build one bridge over another type of bridge?

12 Longest Bridges in the World in 2023
Bridges are among the structures that have been around for a long time. Stone bridges were the simplest and earliest types of bridges. Without a doubt, ancient people also used log bridges, which were later modified into timber bridges. The greatest bridge builders, the ancient Romans, pioneered the construction of modern bridges. The Romans built arch bridges that could withstand any weather. Some of these bridges still exist today. Nowadays, bridge construction has progressed to the point where a human eye cannot see the other end of the bridge while standing in the middle. Bridges no longer only cross rivers, but also lakes, cities, and seas. With that in mind, here are the top 12 longest bridges in the world.

See some cool bridges, learn some new words!
Errata: At 9:25, Edmonton is in Alberta, not Saskatchewan.
Without listing every bridge, there’s no true way to list every type of bridge. There’s too much nuance, creativity, and mixing and matching designs. But that’s part of the joy of paying attention to bridges. Once you understand the basics, you can start to puzzle out the more interesting details.

The world’s highest single-arch railway bridge is nearly ready to go into service after construction workers put the last span of the flyover’s deck in place on August 13, 2022. Located in Indian-administered Kashmir, the arch of the Chenab Rail Bridge is 29 metres (95ft) taller than the Eiffel Tower.

Thank you.
