Life imprisonment can, in certain cases, also be imposed for transportation offences causing death, as a maximum term. Some American states and Canada allow judges to impose life imprisonment for such offences.
This sentence does not exist in all countries. Portugal was the first country in the world to abolish life imprisonment by the prison reforms of Sampaio e Melo in 1884. However, where life imprisonment is a possible sentence, there may also be formal mechanisms to request parole after a certain period of imprisonment. This means that a convict could be entitled to spend the rest of the sentence (until he or she dies) outside prison. Early release is usually conditional depending on past and future conduct, possibly with certain restrictions or obligations. In contrast, when a fixed term of imprisonment has ended, the convict is free.

This Is What It’s Like to Spend Your Life in Prison | NYT Opinion
Listening to the men in the short Opinion Video above is like encountering visitors from another planet. They are serving life sentences at Angola prison, in rural Louisiana, with little to no hope for release. Many are elderly; they have not seen the outside world, or their families, for decades.
They do not face execution, but they have been sentenced to death all the same, their lives spooling out endlessly on the cellblock and in the cotton fields, then ending in a prison hospice bed.
The men are among the thousands in Louisiana — and more than 50,000 nationwide — locked up for life without parole. It costs roughly $70,000 a year for each aging inmate, and this film asks whether the best way to spend billions of taxpayer dollars is on vengeance. The point is not to diminish the sever...

Fiona Beal: Family of murdered partner respond to life sentence
A grieving mother whose son was stabbed to death by his girlfriend and buried in their garden has told of her “revulsion” at having Christmas drinks just feet away from his body.
Fiona Beal, a primary school teacher, concealed a knife in her dressing gown and lured Nick Billingham into bed with the promise of sex at their Northampton home in November 2021.
Beal, 50, admitted to the murder in April during a retrial at the Old Bailey, after her earlier trial at Northampton crown court collapsed. At the end of a two-day sentencing hearing, Judge Mark Lucraft KC sentenced her to a life with a minimum term of 20 years.

The point is not to diminish the severity of the crimes that put these men behind bars. As many of them acknowledge, they have been rightly punished for a long time. But, ask yourself as you watch the video, how long is long enough?
That’s a question more and more states are asking. In recent years, a number of states, including Maryland, South Carolina and New Mexico, have debated changing their laws to give those serving lengthy sentences a chance at freedom. Several states have already enacted so-called second-look laws, which permit reconsideration of sentences for inmates who have reached a certain age or been incarcerated for a minimum term or whose sentences no longer serve a valid legislative purpose. At the federal level, the bipartisan U.S. Sentencing Commission in January issued draft guidelines that would give judges more flexibility to consider releasing elderly inmates.
None of us want to be defined solely by the person we were in our youth, or by the worst thing we ever did. The men serving life without parole feel the same way.

Letby, 33, is only the third woman alive to be given the jail term in the UK. She was sentenced at Manchester crown court on Monday. The former neonatal nurse, the worst child serial killer in modern British history, was also convicted of attempting to murder six more babies at the Countess of Chester hospital.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- A father was sentenced to life in prison for the death of his 2-year-old son in 2020, according to the Shelby County District Attorney's office.
