Level 42 are an Englishpop rock and jazz-funkband, who had a number of worldwide and UK hits during the 1980s and 1990s.
Their most successful single in the UK was "Lessons in Love", which reached number three on the UK Singles Chart, and number 12 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart, upon its release in 1986. The earlier single, "Something About You" was their most successful single in the United States, reaching number 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
After much success as a live and studio band in the 1980s, Level 42's commercial profile diminished during the early 1990s following a series of personnel changes and musical shifts. After disbanding in 1994, the band reformed in 2001.
History
1979–1980: Formation
Mark King and the Gould brothers (Phil and Rowland, the latter generally known by his nickname "Boon") were all brought up on the Isle of Wight and played together in various bands during their teenage years. Phil Gould went on to study at London's Guildhall School of Music and Drama, where he met keyboard player Mike Lindup in a percussion course. Both musicians found that they shared musical heroes: Miles Davis, John McLaughlin, Keith Jarrett and Jan Hammer.
Level 42 was the debut album released in 1981 by the British group Level 42.
It is best known for the track "Love Games", which became a successful jazz–funk and dancefloor hit for the band (reaching number 38 on the UK pop charts). It has figured in both L42's and bassist Mark King's solo live appearances to this day. Also gaining substantial dance airplay on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean was the track "Starchild", with Lindup on vocals.
The third single, "Starchild", has been released in six countries beyond the United Kingdom (peak position: #57), including the United States of America, where it entered the Club Play Singles at #60. In 2001, it was re-released by the label Peppermint Jam Records in the United Kingdom and Germany.
"Level 42" is the first single by Japanese pop singer Kaela Kimura, released on June 23, 2004. It peaked at number fourteen on the Japan Oricon singles chart.

Well I don't know what to do when things go wrong And it's a hopeless situation God knows how And I know And I find Some peace of mind Who's the man that talks about you now? It became a hopeless situation when he left town And I know Yeah I know This peace of mind Cause I'm stupid like this And I'm stupid like that I'm stupid cause I make a mess of things to get you back I never wanna see you're happy without me I wish I could've been somebody else Been somebody else Standing in a single spot of compromise the things we all have to say that no one ever knew A drink expands the ride you caught The college's girls think I'm a joke The day's of run have past Each one's like the last Yeah yeah... Cause I'm stupid like this And I'm stupid like that I'm stupid cause I make a mess of things to get you back I never wanna see you're happy without me I wish I could've been somebody else Each one's like the last...
