"As the Years Go By" is the first single by rock fusion band Mashmakhan from their self-titled debut album. The single was first recorded in Columbia B Studios and was released as the first single to Mashmakhan's self-titled debut album. The other single "Days When We Are Free" was used as the A-side to the 45rpm. "As the Years Go By" was also fit into several compilation albums of '70s songs.
The single, which sold over one million copies worldwide and received a gold disc, was very well received by the public and the critics, despite its eerie minor key tune. Allmusic critic Lindsay Planer also praised the single's sales and its lyrics.
The single was released as "Kiri no Naka no Futari"(霧の中の二人, lit. "Two in the Fog") in Japan.
History
In 1970, "As the Years Go By" was originally recorded by Mashmakhan in Columbia B Studios. "As the Years Go By" was released as the debut single of Mashmakhan's upcoming self-titled album. Following "As the Years Go By" the previously mentioned single and "Gladwin" were released. The self-titled debut, Mashmakhan was released as an LP album in 1970. Later the single appeared on several rock compilation albums. "As the Years Go By" was first included in Rock Artifacts, Vol. 1 in 1990. Level 42 are an Englishpop rock and jazz-funkband, who had a number of worldwide and UK hits during the 1980s and 1990s.
Their most successful single in the UK was "Lessons in Love", which reached number three on the UK Singles Chart, and number 12 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart, upon its release in 1986. The earlier single, "Something About You" was their most successful single in the United States, reaching number 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
After much success as a live and studio band in the 1980s, Level 42's commercial profile diminished during the early 1990s following a series of personnel changes and musical shifts. After disbanding in 1994, the band reformed in 2001.
History
1979–1980: Formation
Mark King and the Gould brothers (Phil and Rowland, the latter generally known by his nickname "Boon") were all brought up on the Isle of Wight and played together in various bands during their teenage years. Phil Gould went on to study at London's Guildhall School of Music and Drama, where he met keyboard player Mike Lindup in a percussion course. Both musicians found that they shared musical heroes: Miles Davis, John McLaughlin, Keith Jarrett and Jan Hammer.
Level 42 was the debut album released in 1981 by the British group Level 42.
It is best known for the track "Love Games", which became a successful jazz–funk and dancefloor hit for the band (reaching number 38 on the UK pop charts). It has figured in both L42's and bassist Mark King's solo live appearances to this day. Also gaining substantial dance airplay on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean was the track "Starchild", with Lindup on vocals.
The third single, "Starchild", has been released in six countries beyond the United Kingdom (peak position: #57), including the United States of America, where it entered the Club Play Singles at #60. In 2001, it was re-released by the label Peppermint Jam Records in the United Kingdom and Germany.
"Level 42" is the first single by Japanese pop singer Kaela Kimura, released on June 23, 2004. It peaked at number fourteen on the Japan Oricon singles chart.

Go on parade and fade Hit the scene in slow Spending all your time with some girl You'll never get to know Wound up tight Dressed all in white Some torment saint Blowing out to drift Leave you even if You live up in your head Scared of every little noise Someone's always breaking in accidentally Using nothing but their voice Shrill and small Echo down the hall Repeating pet names Seeing it in your eyes You're only passing by Go by Someone's in the way Pretty words and inside slurs All the things they have to say To perform the work that they've rehearsed It's a waste of time I put it behind me Once and for all And let the hype decline If the problem wasn't mine
