Bernstein, The greatest 5 min. in music education
This amazing lecture series (The unanswered Question ), is actually an interdisciplinary overview about the evolution of Western European classical music from Bach through the 20th century crisis and beyond a bit . Mr. Bernstein uses linguistics namely Chomskian Linguistics to provide a framework to illustrate how music and all the arts evolved toward greater and greater levels of ambiguity/expressivity over history until the 20th century crisis . He manages this impressive feat of popular education , by dividing music into; Phonology (the study of sound); Syntax (the study of structure) and; Semantics (the study of meaning)

Tenor Keeps Screwing Up while Bernstein Conducts - Awkward Sequence
Bernstein conducts his own score form West Side Story in the recording studio, and has a "fun" time with a poor tenor who keeps screwing it up. I really can't blame Jose Carreras - it's just a great tense sequence caught on film.

Leonard Bernstein (August 25, 1918 – October 14, 1990) was an American composer, conductor, author, music lecturer, and pianist. He was among the first conductors born and educated in the US to receive worldwide acclaim. According to music critic Donal Henahan, he was "one of the most prodigiously talented and successful musicians in American history."
His fame derived from his long tenure as the music director of the New York Philharmonic, from his conducting of concerts with most of the world's leading orchestras, and from his music for West Side Story, Peter Pan,[3] Candide, Wonderful Town, On the Town, On the Waterfront, his Mass, and a range of other compositions, including three symphonies and many shorter chamber and solo works.

He was among the first conductors born and educated in the US to receive worldwide acclaim. Bernstein was the first conductor to give a series of television lectures on classical music, starting in 1954 and continuing until his death. He was a skilled pianist,[4] often conducting piano concertos from the keyboard. He was also a critical figure in the modern revival of the music of Gustav Mahler, the composer he was most passionately interested in.[5]
As a composer he wrote in many styles encompassing symphonic and orchestral music, ballet, film and theatre music, choral works, opera, chamber music and pieces for the piano. Many of his works are regularly performed around the world, although none has matched the tremendous popular and critical success of West Side Story.

From Carnegie Hall, the scene of his debut, to the living room of his home and his private studio overlooking New York's Central Park, Reflections explores the artist's varied and colorful career. Bernstein's eloquence and charm have marked his television appearances from the pioneering Omnibus programs of the 1950s, and the CBS Young People's Concerts, to the provocative Norton lectures delivered at Harvard in the 1970s, and are powerfully evident in this documentary.
Bernstein's genius was, notoriously, protean in its scope. Conductor, pianist, composer, teacher, author, media celebrity: he excelled in all fields, much to the chagrin of his detractors, who felt that he should focus on one thing only and do it right. Yet all his many activities interlocked and cross-fertilized each other: to remove any one of them would have impoverished the rest. Their common denominator is encapsulated in the film's opening sentence by his words "the urge to communicate - with as many people as possible." It's an axiom under which the manifold activities of this almost maniacally dynamic musician fall neatly into place.
