The terms right-hand traffic and left-hand traffic refer to regulations requiring all bidirectional traffic, unless otherwise directed, to keep to the right or to the left side of the road, respectively. This is so fundamental to traffic flow that it is sometimes referred to as the rule of the road. Today, about 65% of the world's population lives in countries with right-hand traffic and 35% in countries with left-hand traffic. About 90% of the world's total road distance carries traffic on the right and 10% on the left. Right-hand traffic predominates across the continental landmasses, while the majority of the world's island nations and territories drive on the left.
Terminology
With a few minor exceptions, each country specifies a uniform road traffic flow: left-hand traffic (LHT), in which traffic keeps to the left side of the road, or right-hand traffic (RHT), in which traffic keeps to the right.
The terms nearside (or kerbside) and offside (or off-kerb side) are used in some English-speaking countries to refer to the passenger and driver sides (in modern parlance) of a vehicle: the "nearside" is closest to the kerb (in the designated direction of traffic) and the "offside" is closest to the centre of the road. The preceding terms point up "safe" (nearside) and "unsafe" (offside) portions of vehicles for loading and unloading passengers and cargo.

One of the most disorienting things about being in England is watching people drive on the left since the majority of the rest of the world drives on the right. What is the reason behind this difference and when was driving on the left established?
🎬 Key Points:
📌 There's no single definitive reason, but a combination of historical factors.
📌 One theory is that people rode horses on the left side of the road in medieval times. This way, right-handed riders could keep their sword arms free in case of conflict.
📌 In 1300, Pope Boniface VIII supposedly mandated keeping left for pilgrims traveling to Rome.
Large wagons pulled by multiple horses became common in the 18th century. The driver would sit on the left rear horse to control the team, again making left-hand traffic more practical.
📌 Traffic congestion in London in the 18th century led to a law requiring left-hand traffic on London Bridge, which later became the national standard.
📌 The British Empire's influence spread left-hand traffic to many former colonies.

About two-thirds of countries drive on the right side. So why don’t countries that drive on the left just switch over? Left-hand side traffic was actually the worldwide norm for a long time, and the split boils down to two main factors – the fact that most people are right-handed, and the fact that countries used different forms of transportation as formalised road rules began to emerge. The invention of cars and the placement of steering wheels influenced countries to switch over to the right — as recently as 1967 for Sweden.

I get asked how different it is to drive a RHD (Right-Hand Drive) car. My 1995 Nissan Skyline GT-R is RHD and I use to own a 95 GTS-T for almost 6 years, so I made a video showing some difference between LHD cars and talk about how it is to drive a RHD car.
