The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) is a mainline ProtestantChristian denomination in the United States in the Reformed tradition. It is often referred to as The Christian Church, The Disciples of Christ, or as The Disciples. The Christian Church was a charter participant in the formation of the World Council of Churches and of the Federal Council of Churches (now the National Council of Churches), and it continues to be engaged in ecumenical conversations.
The Disciples' local churches are congregationally governed. In 2008 there were 679,563 members in 3,714 congregations in North America. For 2012, their Yearbook & Directory claimed 625,252 members in 3,627 congregations.
History
The name, Disciples of Christ, is shared by two groups, The Churches of Christ and the independent Christian churches and churches of Christ. They emerged from the same roots. The Stone-Campbell movement began as two separate threads, each without knowledge of the other, during the Second Great Awakening in the early 19th century. The first of these two groups, led by Barton W. Stone began at Cane Ridge, Bourbon County, Kentucky. The group called themselves simply Christians. The second, began in western Pennsylvania and Virginia (now West Virginia), led by Thomas Campbell and his son, Alexander Campbell. Because the founders wanted to abandon all denominational labels, they used the biblical names for the followers of Jesus that they found in the Bible.
The Disciples of Christ are a Christian rap group which originated in Tulsa, Oklahoma in the early 1990s. They released three albums for Star Song Records and later formed their own label, We are One/Throne Room Records.
Beginnings
The core of the group was Ben Reges (born Alton Hood) and Absalom (Kelvin Harvey) who were attending Oberlin College on football scholarship and friend Prophet (Michael Brown). Hood says of that time,
"Basically we were into the world. We both had scholarships to play football. We didn't have Christ in our lives, so we began to party and live the high life, hanging out with girls, that whole party life. We had this void in our lives. So what happened was that I was introduced by some friends to the occult. It got pretty serious."
Hood credits God with cleaning up both him and Harvey from drug addictions born out of their use in occult rituals:
"Praise God, through a supernatural manifestation of the Holy Spirit, God's power came down right there in the room, saved me, delivered me right there on the spot...".
The term "latter rain" occurs in the King James Version: several times in the Old Testament (e.g., Joel 2:23 "Be glad then, ye children of Zion, and rejoice in the Lord your God: for he hath given you the former rain moderately, and he will cause to come down for you the rain, the former rain, and the latter rain in the first month."), and once in the New Testament (James 5:7: "Be patient therefore, brethren, unto the coming of the Lord. Behold, the husbandman waiteth for the precious fruit of the earth, and hath long patience for it, until he receive the early and latter rain.")
The Latter Rain, also known as the New Order or New Order of the Latter Rain, was a post–World War II movement within PentecostalChristianity which remains controversial to this day. For clarification in discussion of the Latter Rain, a distinction should be made between:
The Latter Rain Revival (1948–1952)
The Latter Rain Movement (1952–1960s)
Sharon Schools (Global Missions)
Other groups influenced by the Latter Rain.
The Latter Rain Movement had its beginnings in the years following World War II and was contemporary with the evangelical awakening led by Billy Graham, as well as the Healing Revival of Oral Roberts, Jack Coe, and William Branham. Branham is often erroneously considered the founder of the Latter Rain because those who started it were inspired by attending one of his meetings. Rather, several leaders of the small Pentecostal, 'Sharon Orphanage' in North Battleford, Saskatchewan, were inspired to look for a deeper dimension of Christianity after visiting Branham's meeting. They began to fast and pray in search of it. Later that year, groups organized large revival events, and news quickly swept across Canada and the United States, influencing many Pentecostal believers.
The Latter Rain Movement was a late 19th-century radical Holiness theology and Revivalist phenomenon which began in western North Carolina and eastern Tennessee. Elements of the movement gave rise to and merged with what would become incipient modern Pentecostalism.
History
The Latter Rain Movement began in western North Carolina and eastern Tennessee among groups of disaffected Baptists and Methodists. The movement was spread throughout the area by Baptist preacher Richard G. Spurling (senior), and the use of "Latter Rain" to describe the movement originated at this time. Considerable opposition from other Baptists arose, and a distinctive identity emerged. At a Holinessrevival meeting in Monroe County, Tennessee during 1886 the movement coalesced with the formation of the Christian Union.
R. G. Spurling was joined by his son Richard G. Spurling, Jr. and by Methodist preacher W. F. Bryant. Richard Spurling, Jr. held a revival in his Baptist church in Liberty, Tennessee during 1892 during which some members spoke in tongues, This resulted in Spurling's expulsion along with some 30 of the congregation. They began meeting at the home of W. F. Bryant in nearby Camp Creek (Cherokee County, North Carolina). From this, the Holiness Church was organized by Spurling, Bryant and Frank Porter. This church became the organizational hub of the rapidly spreading movement.

John 17 & The Latter Rain !
The Lord Jesus Christ told His disciples to "tarry ye in Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high." Luke 24:49. So what were these followers of the Lord doing during this time just before the Early Rain was to be poured out on that day of Pentecost? And what had been His final message to these men He loved, before the darkness of Calvary?
Is this message of our Sovereign Lord and Saviour needed Now even more by us who are living in the days of the Promise of the Latter Rain?

Dare We Pray for the Latter Rain? - Steve Spooner
At the close of earth's history, a special bestowal of spiritual grace is promised to prepare the church for the coming of Jesus Christ. This outpouring of the Spirit is likened to the falling of the latter rain (Zechariah 10:1; Joel 2:23), a metaphor for the rain that comes just before the harvest. Many of us in our churches are praying for the latter rain, but the question is, are we ready? In this message by Steve Spooner, we are presented with the realization that there is an upside and downside to hoping that the rain will come. Perhaps we understand what we need to be doing in our lives in order to prepare for the latter rain, but are we too enmeshed with the world and its conventions for that to happen? Furthermore, are we willing to make whatever sacrifices are necessary to serv...

In short, it is foolish to pray for the latter rain unless we are ready to be caught in a storm.

This is the hour, the time has come His Spirit calls, He calls us on To make this land, holy for the Lord This is the time to seize the day We rise in faith, the promise comes To make this land, holy to the Lord These are the days of the latter rain Days of power, days of grace This is the time the fire will fall To make this land holy To make this land holy to the Lord This is the time, our finest hour Of battles fought and victories won To make this land holy to the Lord And from this time our future calls The promise sure, the rain will fall
