Moment Frame and Braces as Lateral Force Resisting Systems
In this video, Popsicle sticks are used to study various lateral force resisting systems in a building frame. First, we try a building with no lateral system. We will then try a moment frame and finally diagonal and cross-bracing systems will be tried.

Video Description : In civil engineering, stirrups are a type of reinforcement used in reinforced concrete structures, such as beams, columns, and walls. They are typically used to provide lateral support to the main longitudinal reinforcement (usually in the form of bars) and to prevent diagonal cracking in the concrete due to shear forces.
When you mention "2L stirrups," it seems like you're referring to stirrups that are bent in a shape resembling the letter "L." The "2L" might imply that the stirrup has two legs, which can be bent at 90-degree angles to each other.
The term "cutting length" refers to the length of the steel bar or stirrup required for a specific structural element. It's the length you would need to cut from a longer bar to obtain the correct length for the stirrup's configuration within the concrete member.
To calculate the cutting length of 2L stirrups, you would typically follow these steps:
1. **Determine the Stirrup Length:** Measure the distance along the contour where the stirrup will be placed. This is the length of one leg of the "L." If you're using a 2L stirrup, then you'll have two legs of this length.
2. **Account for Bend Lengths:** Stirrups are usually bent at the ends to provide anchorage and to fit within the concrete member. These bend lengths need to be accounted for in the total cutting length.
3. **Add an Overlap Length:** In many cases, a portion of the stirrup might extend beyond the support, and this part is usually overlapped with the adjacent stirrup for continuity and strength. You need to add this overlap length as well.
4. **Calculate the Total Cutting Length:** Add up the lengths from steps 1, 2, and 3 to get the total cutting length for one 2L stirrup. Since you need two stirrups for the 2L shape, multiply the total cutting length by 2.
It's important to note that the exact procedure might vary depending on local building codes, design practices, and the specific dimensions of the structural element you're working on. Always consult relevant design codes or guidelines and work under the supervision of a qualified engineer when dealing with structural calculations.
Remember that my knowledge is based on information available up until September 2021, so there might have been updates or changes in design practices since then. It's recommended to refer to the latest industry standards and consult with professionals for accurate and up-to-date information.
