Menstrual Cycle Basics | 3D animation (1/2)
This 3D animation shows you the basics of the menstrual cycle. The menstrual cycle begins with menstruation. Once the bleeding stops, the uterine lining becomes thicker and begins to prepare for the possibility of a pregnancy. Somewhere around day 14, an egg is released from one of the ovaries and begins its journey down the fallopian tubes to the uterus. If sperm are present in the fallopian tube, fertilization can occur. If the egg is not fertilized, the egg breaks down and hormonal changes signal the uterus to prepare to shed its lining, bringing us back to day one of the menstrual cycle.

Menstrual Cycle Calendar Calculation Explained | Period Cycle Length Counting
Menstrual cycle calendar calculation explained. How do you determine period cycle length or count the number of days in your period cycle?
Calculating a menstrual cycle length can be beneficial for several reasons. First, it can assist with knowing whether periods are being regular. Second, knowing your period cycle length can help in pregnancy planning, as you can know when you will approximately ovulate.
To count your menstrual cycle length, you count cycle day 1 as the first day your period begins. Then you stop counting the day before your next period begins.
In the video, we demonstrate how to calculate menstrual cycle length using a calendar.

Calculating duration of pregnancy and Expected Date of Delivery when the first day of the last menstrual period is known is an essential parts of antenatal care. At times, the provider may not have access to an obstetric calculator, an electronic device for calculation, or a calendar. The calculation is possible if the LMP or an early ultrasound scan is available in this situation. Without this information, the calculation is by clinical examination. Part one describes the calculation of when the Last menstrual date is known. The calculation will be through the Hijri calendar and ultrasound dates in part two. In part, three abdominal examinations will calculate gestational age.

Fetal development during pregnancy:
###first Trimester (Weeks 1-12) - Weeks 1-2: These weeks are counted from the first day of your last menstrual period (LMP). Ovulation and conception occur, leading to the formation of a zygote. The fertilized egg begins to divide and travel down the fallopian tube. Week 3: The fertilized egg implants into the uterine lining. Cells begin to differentiate into the embryo and placenta.
Week 4: The embryo is about the size of a poppy seed. The neural tube, which will develop into the brain and spinal cord, begins to form. Week 5: The heart starts to beat, and basic structures of the brain begin to develop. The embryo is now about the size of a sesame seed. Week 6: Facial features start to emerge, and limb buds form, indicating where arms and legs will develop. The embryo is about the size of a lentil. Week 7: Major organs, including the liver and kidneys, begin to develop. The embryo is roughly the size of a blueberry. Week 8: The embryo is now referred to as a fetus. Most organs are formed, and facial features become more distinct. The fetus is about the size of a grape. Week 9: All major organs are now present, and the fetus begins to move, although the mother may not feel it yet. The fetus is around the size of a cherry. Week 10: The fetus starts to grow nails, and its heart is fully formed. It is about the size of a kumquat. Weeks 11-12: The fetus continues to grow and develop. By the end of the first trimester, it is about 2-3 inches long and can make small movements. The risk of miscarriage decreases significantly after this point.
###secondtrimester (Weeks 13-26)
Weeks 13-14: The fetus develops fine hair (lanugo) and begins to form facial expressions. It is about the size of a lemon. Weeks 15-16: The fetus can make movements and may start sucking its thumb. It is about the size of an avocado. Weeks 17-18: The mother may start feeling the first movements of the fetus, often described as "quickening." The fetus is now developing more distinct features and is about the size of a sweet potato. Weeks 19-20: The development of the senses begins, with taste buds forming and the fetus responding to sounds. An ultrasound may be performed during this period to check for the baby's sex. The fetus is approximately the size of a banana. Weeks 21-22: The fetus continues to grow, and its skin is still thin and translucent. It starts to develop fat under the skin, which helps regulate body temperature. The fetus is about the size of a carrot. Weeks 23-24: At this stage, the fetus is becoming more active, and the mother may feel distinct movements. The lungs are developing, and the fetus is about the size of a cantaloupe. - Weeks 25-26: The fetus can open and close its eyes and responds to light and sound. It has a more developed nervous system and is about the size of a head of cauliflower.
### Third Trimester (Weeks 27-40) - Weeks 27-28: The fetus begins to accumulate fat, which will help with temperature regulation after birth. The brain continues to develop rapidly, and the fetus is about the size of an eggplant. - Weeks 29-30: The fetus's bones are hardening, but the skull remains soft to facilitate delivery. It is about the size of a butternut squash and may start to turn into a head-down position in preparation for birth. - Weeks 31-32: The fetus is developing a more robust immune system and is about the size of a pineapple. The movements may feel more restricted as space in the uterus decreases. - Weeks 33-34: The fetus continues to gain weight and is about the size of a cantaloupe. Its lungs are maturing, and it is practicing breathing movements. - Weeks 35-36: The fetus is getting closer to its birth weight and is about the size of a honeydew melon. The skin is becoming less wrinkled as fat accumulates. - Weeks 37-38: The fetus is considered full-term at 37 weeks. It is about the size of a pumpkin and may be preparing for labor by dropping lower into the pelvis. - Weeks 39-40: The fetus is ready for birth. Most babies are born between 37 and 42 weeks. By this time, the fetus typically weighs between 5.5 to 8.8 pounds (2.5 to 4 kg) and measures about 19 to 21 inches (48 to 53 cm) in length. ### Final Stages of Development: - Week 39: The baby's organs are fully developed, and the lungs are ready for breathing air. The baby may have settled into a head-down position (vertex position) in preparation for delivery. The mother may experience increased pressure in her pelvis and Braxton Hicks contractions as her body prepares for labor. - Week 40: As the due date approaches, the baby's movements may slow down due to space constraints, but they are still active. The mother's body may show signs of labor, such as the "nesting" instinct or loss of the mucus plug. If the baby has not yet arrived, healthcare providers may discuss options for inducing labor.
