Large format refers to any imaging format of 4×5inches (102×127mm) or larger. Large format is larger than "medium format", the 6×6cm (2¼×2¼ inch) or 6×9cm (2¼×3½ inch) size of Hasselblad, Rollei, Kowa, and Pentax cameras (using 120- and 220-rollfilm), and much larger than the 24×36mm (~ 1.0x1.5inch) frame of 35mm format.
The main advantage of large format, film or digital, is higher resolution. A 4×5inch image has about 16times the area, and thus 16× the total resolution, of a 35mm frame.
Large format cameras were some of the earliest photographic devices, and before enlargers were common, it was normal to just make 1:1 contact prints from a 4×5, 5×7, or 8×10-inch negative.
Formats
The most common large format is 4×5 inches, which was the size common cameras used in the 1930s-1950s, like the GraflexSpeed Graphic and Crown Graphic, among others. Less common formats include quarter-plate, 5×7 inches, and 8×10 inches (20×25cm); the size of many old 1920s Kodak cameras (various versions of Kodak 1, 2, and 3 and Master View cameras, to much later Sinar monorail studio cameras) are 11×14 inches, 16×20 inches, 20×24 inches, various panoramic or "banquet" formats (such as 4×10 and 8×20 inches), and metric formats, including 9×12cm, 10×13cm, and 13×18cm and assorted old and current aerial image formats of 9×9 inches, 9×18 inches (K17, K18, K19, K22 etc.), using roll film of 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, or 10 inches width or, view cameras (including pinhole cameras), reproduction/process cameras, and x-ray film.

I can't believe this Large Format Photo Worked!
This was meant to be a redscale image. I had been planning the composition for quite some time, so when the fog rolled in at 2am, I knew exactly where to go. To my dismay, my color film wasn't in the dark bag when I arrived on location. It was a little too late for me to turn back, and since fog is such a rarity where I am, I decided to commit to the shot.
I'm really happy with the way that it came out. It was so fun to make! I think that I'll be doing way more of these in the future!

4x5 Large Format Photography using Paper... instead of Film

In this video, I’m trying something completely new to me, and that is shooting directly to darkroom paper with a large format camera rather than using film.
This paper negative process is something that I’ve been interested in for a while, and I finally decided to get out and experiment. I grab the Horseman 45FA and shoot around twenty sheets over three days, running into my fair share of problems and learning a lot along the way.
This was a fun one, and I’d love to hear from you if you have experience doing this!

In this video, i’m visiting a local woodland to work on a longtime photographic project that is called « Le Chant des Cimes ». I’m taking with me my Hasseblad 500CM and my 8X10 Nagaoka field camera, a couple of rolls and sheet of Ilford HP5.
Overall it was a really enjoyable morning and the picture i took will for some of them integrate the final selection of this documentary project.
