The town grew around the textile industry, but is now best known as the birthplace of Hugh MacDiarmid and Thomas Telford. The population in 2001 was 2,311.
The town was an important centre for the Border Reivers.

A branch of the Carlisle to Hawick railway line to Langholm was completed in 1864, but closed 100 years later. The last regular passenger train was on 13 June 1964, although a special ran in March 1967 - complete with restaurant car; the freight service continued until September 1967. The X95/95 bus line runs through Langholm. The A7 road runs through the town.
In 1858 Langholm Cricket Club was founded. The club play their matches on the picturesque Castleholm Ground. They currently play their matches in the Border League, finishing mid table for the 2009 season. The 2010 season started against Gala at home on 24 April.
The coastline measures 21 miles (34km). The county slopes very gradually from the mountainous districts of the Southern Uplands in the north, down to the sea; lofty hills alternating in parts with stretches of tableland or rich fertile holms. At various points within a few miles of the Solway are tracts of moss land, like Craigs Moss, Lochar Moss and Longbridge Moor in the west, and Nutberry Moss in the east, all once under water, but now largely reclaimed.
Langholm, also known as the Muckle Toon, is located in the Scottish Borders on the A7 20 miles south of Hawick and east of Lockerbie. The town originally grew around the textile industry, but is now best known as the birthplace of scottish writer, Hugh MacDiarmid and renowned civil engineer, architect and stonemason Thomas Telford.
The town is also the home of the Clan Armstrong trust. As a result of this, the town was visited by Neil Armstrong, the first man to set foot on the moon who said "The most difficult place to be recognised is in one's own home town, I consider this [Langholm], now, my home town."
The population in 2001 was 2,311.

The Historic Town of DUMFRIES - Is It Worth A Visit? - Scotland Walking Tour | 4K | 60FPS
Dumfries is a market town and former royal burgh in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland, near the mouth of the River Nith on the Solway Firth, 25 miles (40 km) from the Anglo-Scottish border. Dumfries is the county town of the historic county of Dumfriesshire.[3]
Before becoming King of Scots, Robert the Bruce killed his rival the Red Comyn at Greyfriars Kirk in the town in 1306. The Young Pretender had his headquarters here towards the end of 1745. In the Second World War, the Norwegian Army in exile in Britain largely consisted of a brigade in Dumfries.
Dumfries is nicknamed Queen of the South. This is also the name of the town's football club. People from Dumfries are known colloquially in Scots language as Doonhamers.

Scotland History Tours is here for people who want to learn about Scottish history and get ideas for Scottish history tours. I try to make videos which tell you tales from Scotland's past and give you information about key dates in Scottish history and historical places to visit in Scotland. Not all videos are tales from Scotland's history, some of them are about men from Scotland's past or women from Scotland's past. Basically the people who made Scotland. From April 2020 onward I've tried to give ideas for historic days out in Scotland. Essentially these are days out in Scotland for adults who are interested in historical places to visit in Scotland.
As a Scottish history tour guide people ask: Help me plan a Scottish holiday, or help me plan a Scottish vacation if your from the US. So I've tried to give a bit of history, but some places of interest in Scotland as well.

My road trip around the South West Coastal 300 began in Dumfries 6 days ago and will now end with a more in depth tour of the town nicknamed Scotland’s Queen of the South. I’ll start with a room tour at my hotel The Aberdour on Newall Terrace. Dumfries is a pretty market town with the beautiful River Nith weaving through it.
I started in the High Street where I visited the historical Midsteeple Buildingand then made my way across to Robert Burns House - the place where Scotland’s National Poet lived and died. Opposite is a well maintained memorial garden with paintings, words from some of his poems and a well kept garden. Across the street is St Michael’s and South Parish Church where I came across the final resting place of Robert Burns - the Burns Mausoleum. In the corner of the graveyard I also found his original burial place.
After soaking in a lot of history throughout the morning I crossed the river and walked through a local park alongside the River Nith - the scenery was striking and it was terrific how the blue sky interacted with the old buildings and water - the whole place lit up! I headed back across the river via the Devorgilla Bridge (Old Bridge) which is a 15th century pedestrian bridge perfect for admiring the spires of the old buildings and keeping an eye out for wildlife in the river. This has to be my favourite location in Dumfries.
I spotted the Robert Burns Statue standing in front of the imposing St Bride's Anglican Church, passed Dumfries Academy and learnt a little bit about the author of Peter Pan JM Barrie as I admired Moat Brae and the National Centre for Children's Literature and Storytelling. I had no idea that Peter Pan had a connection with this southern Scottish town but now I do!
What a perfect day for exploring Dumfries and how incredible to round off my week long road trip around South West Scotland than to enjoy some time in the place where the route begins and ends. What an adventure!

Langholm is famous for having what is considered one of the finest border 'Common Ridings' in the region every July.
The video features many local beauty spots including Whita Hill, the MacDiarmid Memorial, Round House, Skippers Bridge, Parish Church and War Memorial.

The first thing you’ll notice about Dumfries & Galloway is just how beautiful this part of lowland Scotland is, from its stunning coastlines and sandy beaches to its acres of forests and green spaces.
Reconnect with the outdoors as you battle it out against the family in a range of fun activities at Galloway Activity Centre. Take a wander through Logan Botanic Park near Stranraer, Scotland’s most exotic garden, where you will discover a variety of rare plants and flowers. Embrace your inner child as you explore Moat Brae, the childhood playground of author JM Barrie or learn about the fascinating history behind Dunskey Castle, near Portpatrick.
The fun doesn’t stop when the sun sets though. Enjoy an evening of stargazing at Galloway Forest Dark Sky Park and be dazzled by the wonders of the night sky.
Looking for a place to rest your head? Dumfries & Galloway has many different types of accommodation to suit all tastes and budgets. From cosy cottage retreats to luxury hotel stays, visitors who come here are truly spoiled for choice.
Relax and let the landscape and atmosphere of this magical corner of Scotland work its spell on you.
