Haiti: Almost 200 Killed in Massacre Ordered by Gang Leader After Son's Death | Firstpost America
Almost 200 people were killed over the weekend after gang members targeted them using knives and machetes in Haiti’s capital Port-au-Prince. The massacre took place after gang leader Monel "Mikano" Felix's son died of an extreme illness. Felix was told that some elderly people in Cite Soleil, one of Port-au-Prince's poorest neighbourhoods, performed witchcraft that made his son fatally sick. The vast majority of civilians killed were above the age of 60. Meanwhile, younger people who were targeted by gang members were trying to save others. Felix also ordered the killing of some elderly female Voodoo practitioners back in 2012.

Haiti gang leader accused of slaughtering over 100 people, believed witchcraft used to sicken son
A gang leader in Haiti who controls a key port in the country’s capital was accused of slaughtering the elderly and Vodou religious leaders in droves during a bloody campaign to avenge his son’s death over the weekend, according to the government and human rights organizations.
Wharf Jeremie gang leader Micanor Altès, also known as Monel Felix and Wa Mikanò, allegedly initiated the mass attack in Port-au-Prince that primarily targeted the local elders after he sought advice from a voodoo priest who accused the elderly in the area of using witchcraft to make his son sick.
“A red line has been crossed,” the Haitian prime minister’s office said in a statement, adding it would “mobilize all forces to track down and annihilate” those responsible, including Altès.

I Met Haiti's Most Wanted Gang Leader!🇭🇹- Barbecue
I travel deep into the heart of Haiti to meet Jimmy Chérizier, known as Barbecue, the country’s most wanted man. Once a police officer, Barbecue is now the leader of one of Haiti’s most powerful gangs. Some see him as a Robin Hood-like figure fighting for the poor, while others hold him responsible for kidnappings, violence, and the tragic La Saline massacre.
As the first-ever YouTube creator to get a sit-down interview with Barbecue, I bring you a one-of-a-kind, unfiltered look at his perspective on Haiti’s struggles. We explore his rise to power, his thoughts on the corruption plaguing the country, and the allegations against him.

Gang leader in Haiti orders killings of at least 110 over alleged witchcraft
Gang violence wracked Haiti over the weekend, leading to the deaths of reportedly nearly 200, including more than 100 elderly people, after a gang leader accused them of causing his child’s sickness through witchcraft. According to the National Human Rights Defense Network, gang members rounded people up who they suspected of practicing voodoo and executed them with machetes and knives in an impoverished western area of Port-au-Prince, the Haitian capital.
The killings took place on Friday, Dec. 6, and continued on Saturday, Dec. 7, after the gang leader’s son reportedly died from his illness.
The United Nations says in total at least 184 people died in gang-related violence in Haiti over the weekend and the latest numbers bring the death toll to 5,000 people this year.

STORYLINE:
Kenyan police exchanged fire with gangs in Port-au-Prince on Thursday while establishing control of a building in an area of the capital controlled by the Viv Ansanm gang, led by Jimmy Chérizier, also known as Barbecue.
The building, which used to house offices of the Haitian National Police, was evacuated soon after Barbecue’s gang took control of the entire neighborhood of Delmas 2, three years ago.
Late November, Kenyan officers of the U.N.-backed Multinational Security Support Mission (MSS) regained control of the building but remain under constant fire from Viv Ansanm gang members who are encroached in Delmas 2, and only a few meters away from the home of the notorious gang leader, Chérizier.
When Kenyan police arrived in Haiti as part of a U.N.-backed mission earlier this year to tackle gang violence, hopes were high.
However, 400 Kenyan police officers and understaffed police departments lack funding and personnel, and gangs now control 85% of the capital.
The crisis has only deepened since the international policing contingent arrived. The main international airport closed for the second time this year after gangs opened fire on commercial flights in mid-November, striking a flight attendant.
Gunmen also are attacking once-peaceful communities to try and seize control of the entire capital, taking advantage of political infighting that led to the abrupt dismissal of the prime minister earlier this month.
Every day, as Kenyans patrol the streets of the capital in armored vehicles, they face attacks from various gangs in different areas city.
In a recent statement, the Kenyan-led mission said it was “cognizant of the road ahead that is fraught with challenges.”
But it noted that ongoing joint patrols and operations have secured certain communities and forced gangs to change the way they operate.
Godfrey Otunge, Kenyan Commander of the Multinational Security Support Mission said in an interview with The Associated Press that phase two of the operation would start before Christmas.

This is the largest mass killing in the country since October, when at least 115 people were reportedly murdered in a farming community by gang members. Authorities say the victims were targeted for forming a vigilante group to fight off gangs in the region.
Officials estimate gangs now control 85% of the Haitian capital. A U.N.-backed security force has been working to quell gang violence since 2022 but is vastly undermanned and underfunded.
The U.N. is attempting to turn the mission into a peacekeeping effort. However, its efforts reportedly face opposition from China and Russia.
