The Rise of the Celts in Central Europe (Documentary)
The Hallstatt culture is considered by many historians and archaeologists as one of the first Celtic or Proto-Celtic cultures. Several valuable discoveries have been made all around central Europe during the Late Bronze Age/Early Iron Age. From ''kingly'' swords and daggers to elaborate artifacts and fortresses, the findings of the Hallstatt Culture reveal that even from their early stages, the Celts were not as ''barbaric'' as many previously thought.

La Tène Swords
The swords of the late La Tène are some of the most familiar Iron Age swords. Used by Celts from Ireland to Hungary to Anatolia, they were some of the most widely used style of weapon in the late European Iron Age. They were adopted by the Roman cavalry and became known as the Spatha, which would go on to influence the development of Germanic swords in the migration period, the "Viking" swords, and eventually the medieval broadsword used by knights of the high medieval period.

The Origins and History of the Ancient Celts
The ancient Celts were various tribal groups living in parts of western and central Europe in the Late Bronze Age and through the Iron Age (c. 700 BCE to c. 400 CE). Given the name Celts by ancient writers, these tribes and their culture migrated and so they established a presence in territories from Portugal to Turkey.
Although diverse tribes and never a single unified state, the ancient Celts were connected by the Celtic language and marked similarities in art, modes of warfare, religion, and burial practices. Although the Celtic culture was absorbed within the Roman Empire from the 1st century BCE, Celts continued to thrive in more remote parts of Europe like Ireland and northern Britain where Celtic languages are still spoken today.

Between Hallstatt and La Tene - From Early to Late iron Age #shorts
In the Eastern Hallstatt zone, different chiefdoms already had contacts with Celtic societies since 6th century BC. It is not exactly known how the transition from Hallstatt to La Tene communities transpired. It probably depended on region and the customs of migrating Celtic tribes, but it could range from diplomacy, peaceful assimilation to armed conflict. Many Hallstatt centers show signs of crisis and abandonment during the time of transition. Whether Celts were the sole reason for it, remains unknown.
The transition between eras are some of the most interesting events across history and are plagued with many unanswered questions. The same is true at the passage between Early and Late Iron age. How did the old Hallstatt communities become “Celtic”?

Celtic Graves and Burials of La Tène Culture #shorts
At the early times of La La Tène Culture, in the 5th and 4th centuries BC, rich burials of both men and female nobles could be found, especially in the areas of present-day France and Germany. After that period, however, both male and female graves became comparatively modest and standardized across Europe. Deceased were predominantly cremated on a pyre with their equipment, and then buried with provisions.
It is possible that the consolidation of the new social relationships and the great migrations, slowly removed the need to display power and legitimacy of authority through lavish rituals and princely burials.
The graves were of varying shapes, circular oval or rectangular. The size depended on the status of the deceased, as well as the number of bodies it held.

The earliest Celtic art originated in the 5th century BC, in various centers from western France to Czech republic. It was temperate Europe’s first complex art and the Celts’ use of curved geometry remains unparalleled among the ancient cultures. La Tene metalsmiths designed complex vegetal patterns supported by underlying geometry. The new iconography and symbolism largely reflect the new religious beliefs, their expressions and new social relationships.
Early Celtic art was depicted as apparently abstract curves. Like previous prehistoric art, this shows different ways of seeing the world, where creatures and plants lurked within the shapes. It also portrays mythology and religion: fantastical creatures and the belief that these patterns could protect the object and its bearer, or affect whoever set their eyes upon it.
Celtic art also reveals regional and tribal variations and interpretations. Celts were people with individual style and technical skills, channeling those in their visage, personal items and weaponry. Archeology shows us a contrasting perspective from that of ancient Mediterranean civilizations, like Romans who considered Celts savages. While Roman art was classical and realistic, Celts at first flourished in the abstract depictions and fantastical ornaments.
Yet in the ancient Celtic art, we can often see mingling of temperate and Mediterranean Europe. That’s because artisans of La Tene culture drew inspirations from different things, including imported items and art from the Mediterranean civilizations, like Etruscans and Greeks.
These were catalysts of art and development of new styles, however Celts interpreted them according to their own aesthetic taste and preferences, leading to their unique art style. Coins are the most prominent example of this, with the Celts adapting the visage of classical gods, rulers and even more realistic depictions.
Celtic art was functional and it served a variety of ever-changing needs.
It has been categorized into multiple Styles or Stages, which spread across time and space.
One of the most widespread Celtic motifs was the human head or face. The heads of their main rivals were treated like trophies - embalmed, carefully handled and displayed to foreigners to see. To what extent Celtic art reflects such practices remains unknown.
Another prevalent motif is that of a boar, especially among warriors, who depicted boars on their weapons in the hope to be blessed with the animal’s symbolic power, courage and aggression. Many bronze statues have also been found at the archaeological sites.
While the ancient writings describe Celts’ ferociousness, boasting, bravery, and alcohol-consumption, their own art gives us a different picture - a more gentle nature of rich culture and art in line with their spiritual world, flora and fauna, and nature, which the Celts held in reverence. Their aesthetics of fascinating geometrical patterns and circolinear motifs, remains interesting even to the modern public.

The ‘Celts’ - Definition & Problems
The term ‘Celts’ is commonly used to refer to peoples who lived in Iron Age Europe north of the Mediterranean region prior to the Roman conquest after ancient writers gave them that name. However, it is a problematic label. This is because these peoples were not part of a unified state but, rather, belonged to a multitude of tribes, many of which had no direct contact with each other. The term remains useful for its convenience but it does disguise the complex relations between different western and central European tribes, the overlapping of some cultural features in time and space, and the isolation and uniqueness of other such features. The European Iron Age was certainly a vibrant period of cultural interaction, trade relations, warfare, and migrations.

Did the old, native societies completely collapse, were they militarily subjugated, or were diplomacy and assimilation the main components? To what degree did the ethnicity of communities change?
Unlike the preceding Hallstatt chiefdoms that built their centers of power on hills, the Celts preferred to settle on flat plains and valleys - a ground more suitable for farming. But while some Hallstatt hillforts were abandoned, life in many of them continued. Celts often didn’t migrate in numbers needed to completely overthrow all previous inhabitants of a region. Instead, smaller groups and individuals like mercenaries, traveling artisans, merchants and brides married off to other communities, all did their part in the spread of La Tene culture, sometimes even without settling a region on a large scale.
Their buildings and furnishing remained similar, while incorporating some new Celtic technological and cultural novelties, like potter wheel. The Celts also improved metallurgy, iron production and agriculture.
Some of the bigger changes were the burial methods of flat cemeteries with cremation graves, religious worship, and jewelry. Celts also produced coins inspired by Mediterranean civilizations, which replaced ancient treasure hoards of semi-finished objects.

The most notable characteristic of Celtic graves are ritualistically destroyed and deformed weapons. The same is true for most metal objects and even some in graves of women. This was probably done with the belief that a person’s, especially warrior’s, equipment lost its power and purpose with the death of its owner.
