The single biggest reason why start-ups succeed | Bill Gross | TED
Bill Gross has founded a lot of start-ups, and incubated many others — and he got curious about why some succeeded and others failed. So he gathered data from hundreds of companies, his own and other people's, and ranked each company on five key factors. He found one factor that stands out from the others — and surprised even him.
TEDTalks is a daily video podcast of the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world's leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes (or less). Look for talks on Technology, Entertainment and Design -- plus science, business, global issues, the arts and much more.

1960s Baby Boomers Were Raised Like Robots
I grew up in the 1940s and 1950s. I became a documentary filmmaker when I was just 22 years old so by the time I got a grant from PBS to make a television series on the 1960s titled Making Sense of the Sixties (1990), I had been doing documentary interviews for a very long time. This is a clip from an episode of that series.
When people say that the 1950s were easier than today, the 1950s may have been easier for certain groups of people. For example the economy was strong, unemployment was low, and the middle class was expanding. Also the post-World War II era brought about a sense of stability and prosperity for many Americans.

1960s "GRASS" Gave Boomers Freedom They Say
To see the full clip go here - https://youtu.be/_rTuPEdlhQs
This clip is taken from my 1990 television series, Making Sense of the Sixties where my team and I interviewed hundreds of baby boomers and asked them to tell what happened to them and what they remember from growing up in the 1950s and 1960s. So the comments made in this clip were recorded in 1989 or 1990.
Some of my younger subscribers see the baby boomers as selfish. Indeed in some ways I think they were. I have recently been talking with my baby boomer colleagues, friends and family and as these baby boomers continue to age, there are a variety of concerns that have become more concerning to them. Some are sexual in nature. Those seem to be more male concerns and female concerns. Here are some of their other concerns:

I grew up in the 1940s and 1950s.
Economic prosperity: The 1950s were a time of economic growth and stability in the United States. The post-World War II boom led to low unemployment rates, a rising middle class and a sense of financial security for many Americans.
Simpler lifestyle: Compared to today the 1950s were a simpler time in terms of technology and media. People didn't have smartphones, social media or constant access to news and information. This may have made it easier to disconnect and focus on family, friends and leisure activities.
Social norms: In the 1950s there were more clearly defined gender roles and expectations for behavior. This may have provided a sense of structure and stability for some people.
The 1950s have been described by some of my commentators and by my team in this clip as a socially uptight time period due to the strict social norms and expectations that existed during that era. Here are a few examples:
Gender roles: The 1950s were characterized by rigid gender roles with men expected to be breadwinners and women expected to be homemakers. Women who pursued careers or wanted more independence were often stigmatized and marginalized.
Conformity: The post-World War II era brought about a desire for conformity and a rejection of anything seen as "un-American." This led to a culture of uniformity and homogeneity, with little room for individual expression or diversity.
Sexual repression: The 1950s were a time of sexual conservatism, with premarital sex, homosexuality, and other non-heteronormative behaviors stigmatized and often criminalized. This led to a culture of sexual repression and secrecy, which could be suffocating for many people.
Racism and discrimination: Despite the economic prosperity of the 1950s, many people of color faced discrimination and prejudice on a daily basis. Segregation was still in place in many parts of the country, and the civil rights movement was just beginning to gain traction.
In many ways Americans have more freedom today than they did in the 1950s.
Civil rights: In the 1950s segregation and discrimination were still prevalent, particularly for people of color. Since then, significant progress has been made in advancing civil rights and ensuring equal treatment under the law.
Women's rights: Women in the 1950s were expected to conform to strict gender roles and had limited opportunities for education and career advancement. Today, women have greater access to education, career opportunities, and reproductive rights.
The 1950s were a time of intense stigma and discrimination against gays with homosexuality often criminalized and stigmatized.
Freedom of expression: While the 1950s were characterized by conformity and a rejection of anything seen as "un-American," today's society is generally more accepting of diverse opinions, beliefs, and lifestyles. Social media and the internet have provided greater platforms for free expression and the sharing of ideas.
Prior to my series, there had been a series on PBS called Eyes On The Prize that looked at the civil rights movement during that time. My challenge was to make a series that helped the teenage and early 20s children of those who grew up during these times, the so-called silent generation and the baby boomers, to understand what their parents had gone through. I decided to interview for the most part ordinary Americans and historians - experts - who had spent their time studying this era. The style of my interviews was to let people tell the stories of their lives their ways.
One of the main ways that the "rules" from the 1950s were communicated to kids and teenagers was at school and through educational films like the ones presented. It was here that I found rules stated in obvious and subtle ways that matched what most of the people I interviewed remembered from that time.
Based on what I heard from the interviews and from the historians, my team and I concluded that it was largely the experiences that kids had in the 1950s that created many of the social and some of the political events that took place in the 1960s. Other segments from the series are on my YouTube channel. I do hope you enjoy this and find it thought-provoking.

The 1960s was a decade that saw a tremendous amount of societal, cultural, political, and technological changes transpire – especially during the latter half of the decade. The first chunk of the 60s weren't that much unlike the late 1950s, but as we all know, the counterculture movement that gave us iconic things such as Woodstock and the Beatles changed all of that.
It was a particularly groundbreaking time for the world of television especially. During this era, social factors played a role in the decline of more traditional family-friendly programming that viewers were used to in the previous decade, but that wasn't necessarily as reflected in the ratings as it would be in the 70s.
The swinging 60s were an era that embraced a willful departure from orthodoxy. At the same time, some viewers still clung to the sensibilities and values that were held dear in the 1950s. As such, what you got in the 60s, was a bit of a mixed bag of old-school ideals combined with fresh new material that challenged the status quo – albeit a bit more subtly than the following decade
Westerns dominated the ratings during the early years of the 60s, while sitcoms and variety shows would prove to be quite popular in the second half of the decade. By the final year of the 60s, however, one sketch comedy show would burst on to the scene that would lay the groundwork for the future of shows in this category. If you're interested in learning what that show was, be sure to watch this video in full.

Other segments from the series are on my YouTube channel. I do hope you enjoy this and find it thought-provoking.

To support my efforts to create more clips please donate to me at www.patreon.com/allinaday. This is a clip from the television series I made for PBS called Making Sense of the Sixties. I had the chance to spend a year examining my youth and how and why kids like me became active members of the 60s generation. If you are from that generation or a child of the 60s, I think you would find the entire series of value. To see my other work visit www.theHoffmancollection.com

Healthcare and medical expenses: Baby boomers are more likely to develop chronic conditions and require more medical attention. They are concerned about access to quality healthcare, managing medical expenses and finding adequate insurance coverage.
Financial security and retirement: Baby boomers are now retired or nearing retirement age. They are concerned about having enough savings, income, and investments to maintain their desired standard of living throughout their retirement years.
Long-term care and living arrangements: Baby boomers are considering the possibility of needing long-term care such as assisted living or nursing home facilities due to age-related health issues. Some are looking into downsizing their homes or exploring alternative living arrangements such as RV traveling, age-restricted communities or co-housing.
Social Security and Medicare: The sustainability and future of these programs is a major concern for baby boomers as they rely on them for financial support and healthcare coverage during retirement.
Isolation and loneliness: As baby boomers age they may lose spouses, friends or family members, increasing the risk of social isolation and loneliness.
Staying active and healthy: Baby boomers are focused on staying physically and mentally active to maintain their independence (critical to them) and overall health. They try to engage in regular exercise, take up hobbies and focus on preventive health measures such as a balanced diet.
Estate planning and legacy: Some boomers although not all are concerned about estate planning, ensuring their assets are distributed according to their wishes and creating a lasting legacy for their children and grandchildren.
You can find many clips from my series by searching the words "making sense of" on my YouTube channel. The 6 hour series was controversial when it ran on PBS back in 1991. Some felt that it wasn't "political enough". Others felt that it was just perfect because it looked at the social movements and behaviors of that time, at the way people lived and how they felt, not about the politics of the 1950s and 1960s. I felt that the political issues were historically important but in my view, not the most important part for younger generations, the children and grandchildren of baby boomers, to understand the lives of boomers and how and why they did what they did.
I did not realize until I began to post clips from the series just how hostile some were to baby boomers – blaming the current behavioral and economic ills in America on the boomers, their sense of entitlement and their lack of concern for the generations that would come after them.
The series and this clip was not designed to defend boomers behavior but merely to present how those who lived it saw it when they looked back on it in 1990. I do hope that it gives Genx and Millenials a more three-dimensional understanding of this time in America. If you search to see more clips, you will find clips on many subjects. Hippies. Rebellions. Anti and pro Vietnam war feelings. 1950s high school. 1950s family Life. Rules for dress. Rules for behavior. Marijuana and the early drug culture. Dropouts. Runaways and more.
