By the early 18thcentury, the magnates of Poland and Lithuania controlled the state– or rather, they managed to ensure that no reforms would be carried out that might weaken their privileged status (the "Golden Freedoms"). Through the abuse of the liberum veto rule which enabled any deputy to paralyze the Sejm (Commonwealth's parliament) proceedings, deputies bribed by magnates or foreign powers or those simply content to believe they were living in an unprecedented "Golden Age", paralysed the Commonwealth's government for over a century.
The idea of reforming the Commonwealth gained traction since the mid-17th century; it was however viewed with suspicion not only by its magnates but also by neighboring countries, which had been content with the deterioration of the Commonwealth and abhorred the thought of a resurgent and democratic power on their borders. With the Commonwealth Army reduced to around 16,000, it was easy for its neighbors to intervene directly (The Imperial Russian Army numbered 300,000; The Prussian Army and Imperial Austrian Army, 200,000 each).

The uprising was destined to fail and Kosciuszko went to the U.S. where he heard of Polish soldiers fighting in the Napoleon army.
Having found out Napoleon wasn’t interested in restoring Poland, Kosciuszko went to Switzerland where he died at the age of 71.

Znakomity reżyser Leon Schiller włączył go do własnej inscenizacji Krakowiaków i Górali.
1794 r. – Bitwa pod Racławicami, w której decydującą rolę odegrali krakowscy kosynierzy. Tekst napisał twórca anonimowy w 1794 r. Słowa refrenu i melodię skomponował Kazimierz Hofman. W 1881 r.Ludwik Władysław Anczyc wprowadził tę pieśń do swej sztuki „Kościuszko pod Racławicami”. Pierwotnie śpiewano na inną melodię.

Tadeusz Kościuszko was a Polish-Lithuanian military engineer, statesman, and military leader who became a national hero in Poland, Lithuania, Belarus, and the United States. He fought in the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth's struggles against Russia and Prussia, and on the US side in the American Revolutionary War. As Supreme Commander of the Polish National Armed Forces, he led the 1794 Kościuszko Uprising. The Kościuszko Uprising was an uprising against the Russian Empire and the Kingdom of Prussia led by Tadeusz Kościuszko in the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth and the Prussian partition in 1794. It was a failed attempt to liberate the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth from Russian influence after the Second Partition of Poland (1793) and the creation of the Targowica Confederation. The Battle of Racławice was one of the first battles of the Polish-Lithuanian Kościuszko Uprising against Russia. It was fought on 4 April 1794 near the village of Racławice in Lesser Poland. Polish peasants constituted the majority in army, they used scythes and they won with regular Russian army. They captured 1200 rifles and 12 cannons.

Dozens of Polish Americans and community members gathered in Greenpoint to witness the unveiling of a statue dedicated to American war hero Gen. Thaddeus Kosciuszko.
Tadeusz Kościuszko leaves his native Poland to join the American Revolution. An accomplished military architect, he serves as a Colonel in the Continental Army under Major General Horatio Gates. When General John Burgoyne and his Redcoats force the Americans to abandon Fort Ticonderoga, Tadeusz and his men fell trees, dam streams, and destroy bridges to protect their retreat. Exposed and vulnerable, the Americans need to find a defensible position between the two armies to build fortifications. Kościuszko constructs a robust array of defenses at Bemis Heights, putting the British at a tactical disadvantage during the Second Battle of Saratoga. Surrounded and outnumbered 3-to-1, General John Burgoyne surrenders to Gates. Inspired by this news, France formally recognizes the United States and enters the war, turning the tide of the American Revolution… thanks, in part, to the ingenuity of Tadeusz Kościuszko.
