The Bosporan Kingdom, also known as the Kingdom of the Cimmerian Bosporus (Greek:Βασίλειον του Κιμμερικού ΒοσπόρουBasileion tou Kimmerikou Bosporou), was an ancient state located in eastern Crimea and the Taman Peninsula on the shores of the Cimmerian Bosporus, the present-day Strait of Kerch. (It was not named after the more famous Bosphorus beside Istanbul at the other end of the Black Sea.) The Bosporan Kingdom was the longest surviving Roman client kingdom. The 1st and 2nd centuries BC saw a period of renewed golden age of the Bosporan state. It was a Roman province from 63 to 68 AD, under Emperor Nero. At the end of the 2nd century AD, King Sauromates II inflicted a critical defeat on the Scythians and included all the territories of the Crimea in the structure of his state.
The prosperity of the Bosporan Kingdom was based on the export of wheat, fish and slaves. The profit of the trade supported a class whose conspicuous wealth is still visible from newly discovered archaeological finds, excavated, often illegally, from numerous burial barrows known as kurgans. The once-thriving cities of the Bosporus left extensive architectural and sculptural remains, while the kurgans continue to yield spectacular Greco-Sarmatian objects, the best examples of which are now preserved in the Hermitage in St. Petersburg. These include gold work, vases imported from Athens, coarse terracottas, textile fragments and specimens of carpentry and marquetry.

053:The Bosporan Kingdom - Greeks of the Crimea
Straddling the Strait of Kerch in the Northern Black Sea, the Bosporan Kingdom provides an unusual case study within the Hellenistic period. Originally settled by Greeks during the 6th century BC, the Cimmerian Bosporus would become host to a powerful kingdom backed up economically by its massive grain exports to the Mediterranean. For most of its history the kingdom would be headed by the Spartocid Dynasty, a group of Hellenized Thracians who ruled as tyrants and kings until the early 1st century BC, and had close ties with the nomadic Scythian and Sarmatian tribes of the steppe as both enemies and trading partners.

How a Greek Kingdom Arose in the Crimea
The Bosporan Kingdom was a Greco-Scythian hybrid domain centred around what is now eastern Crimea. Situated at the edge of the known world and surrounded by powerful barbarian tribes, living in this region was far from easy.
Yet, despite these considerable challenges, persistence and perseverance ensured this kingdom transformed from a small collection of dependent colonies into one of the most remarkable kingdoms in antiquity: the Jewel of the Black Sea.

The Bosporan kingdom grew out of the Greek colonies of the northern Black Sea region. It was a tiny state compared to its neighbours. Although seemed highly vulnerable, this state turned out to be surprisingly tenacious and lasted more than 800 years, surviving both the Roman Empire and the Migration period.
