The biggest mistakes in mapmaking history - Kayla Wolf
Travel through the history of mapmaking and discover what big mistakes cartographers made about the world’s geography.

For thousands of years, people made both functional maps and what are known as cosmographies, illustrating the earth and its position in the cosmos, often including constellations, gods, and mythic locations. These maps were meant to depict the world's geography, but weren't necessarily useful for navigation and contained some glaring mistakes. Kayla Wolf shares mapmaking’s biggest blunders.

What is a Map? Crash Course Geography #2
From navigating a cross-country road trip (or just finding the nearest coffee shop), to analyzing election results, maps play a huge role in how we interpret the world! Today, we're going to talk about the differences between reference maps and thematic maps, take a closer look at how projections play a part in how we perceive maps, and discuss the role of the cartographer (or map maker) in all of this. Maps are incredibly powerful tools and play a crucial role in how we understand the world, but they are also made by people, so it is our job to think critically about how these stories are being presented to us.

Map Charts with Disambiguation, the multiply trick, and two functions by Chris Menard
I'm trying to chart counties in Georgia. The problem is Map Charts can't tell if the county is Georgia or some other state. To fix this you need to use disambiguation.
Also shown in this video is the ISText and the T function. I combined conditional formatting with the IsText function.
I use paste special/multiple to change text to numbers.

Disambiguation or Entity Linking is the assignment of a knowledge base identifier (Wikidata, Wikipedia) to a named entity. Our goal was to improve an MVP model by adding newly created knowledge while maintaining competitive F1 scores.
Taking an entity linking model from MVP into production in a spaCy-native pipeline architecture posed several data science and engineering challenges, such as hyperparameter estimation and knowledge enhancement, which we addressed by taking advantage of the engineering tools Docker and Kubernetes to semi-automate training as a...

Disambiguation of Imprecise Input with One-dimensional Rotational Text Entry
Full Title:
Disambiguation of Imprecise Input with One-dimensional Rotational Text Entry
Authors:
Will Walmsley, W. Xavier Snelgrove, Khai N Truong
Abstract:
We introduce a distinction between disambiguation supporting continuous vs. discrete ambiguous text entry. With continuous ambiguous text entry methods, letter selections are treated as ambiguous due to expected imprecision rather than due to discretized letter groupings. We investigate the simple case of a one-dimensional character layout to demonstrate the potential of techniques designed for imprecise entry. Our rotation-based sight-free technique, Rotext, maps device orientation to a layout optimized for disambiguation, motor efficiency, and learnability. We also present an audio feedback system for efficient selection of d...

ElixirConf 2021 - Vanessa Lee - And Yet Akin: Name Disambiguation in Elixir
Synonymity and homonymity make name disambiguation difficult. To ease this difficulty, I combined two unmaintained Elixir string comparison libraries and added preprocessing and a double metaphone algorithm. The result is a comprehensive map of scores for pattern identification and machine learning. This talk will address the pre-processing, algorithms, and scoring as well as the strengths and limitations. A live demonstration of scoring will allow us to identify patterns. We end with a discussion of how to gain further benefits from the scores.

Meet your Maker Forge Contest: Squad CTF: Disambiguation
This is the first entry into the third installment of the Meet Your Maker forge contest series. This map is a symmetrical 5v5 objective focused map. There are two small islands separated by a small river. A fortified base sits atop each island and the chasm between them is connected by a single-wide bride. Vehicles are a very prominent part of the gameplay of the map and the extensive array of routes between the two bases adds to the replayability.
About Meet Your Maker:
-The series was founded on collaborative principals between communities, where instead of operating independently of each other creating contest overlap, we decided to band together and coordinate our efforts as one, as friends. This also allows us to focus on the competition at hand and not on the competition of parties...

Graph-based word sense disambiguation
An animation of the word sense disambiguation algorithm described in Navigli & Lapata (2010). The algorithm is trying to disambiguate the senses of the words in the sentence "Drink the milk."
The algorithm starts off by creating two graphs: one large graph (not shown) of the entirety of WordNet, where each vertex is a synset and each edge is a semantic relation between synsets; and a "disambiguation" subgraph (depicted here) containing only the vertices for the synsets of "drink" and "milk". Then it does a depth-first search starting from each of these synsets in the original WordNet graph, looking for any of the other synsets. Once it finds them, it adds the path and the intermediate vertices to the disambiguation graph.
Once the search is over, the degree of each vertex is calculate...

Disambiguation or Entity Linking is the assignment of a knowledge base identifier (Wikidata, Wikipedia) to a named entity. Our goal was to improve an MVP model by adding newly created knowledge while maintaining competitive F1 scores.
Taking an entity linking model from MVP into production in a spaCy-native pipeline architecture posed several data science and engineering challenges, such as hyperparameter estimation and knowledge enhancement, which we addressed by taking advantage of the engineering tools Docker and Kubernetes to semi-automate training as an on-demand job.
We also discuss some of our learnings and process improvements that were needed to strike a balance between data science goals and engineering constraints and present our current work on improving performance through BERT-embedding based contextual similarity.

We also present an audio feedback system for efficient selection of disambiguated word candidates, and explore the role that time spent acknowledging word-level feedback plays in text entry performance. Through a user study, we show that despite missing on average by 2.46--2.92 character positions, with the aid of a maximum a posteriori (MAP) disambiguation algorithm, users can average sight-free entry speed of 12.6 wpm with 98.9% accuracy within 13 sessions (4.3 hours). In a second study, expert users are found to reach 21 wpm with 99.6% accuracy after session 20 (6.7 hours) and continue to grow in performance, with individual phrases entered at up to 37 wpm. A final study revisits the learnability of the optimized layout. Our modelling of ultimate performance indicates maximum overall sight-free entry speeds of 29.0 wpm with audio feedback, or 40.7 wpm if an expert user could operate without relying on audio feedback.

ABSTRACT
Synonymity and homonymity make name disambiguation difficult. To ease this difficulty, I combined two unmaintained Elixir string comparison libraries and added preprocessing and a double metaphone algorithm. The result is a comprehensive map of scores for pattern identification and machine learning. This talk will address the pre-processing, algorithms, and scoring as well as the strengths and limitations. A live demonstration of scoring will allow us to identify patterns. We end with a discussion of how to gain further benefits from the scores.
OBJECTIVES:
To introduce the problem of name disambiguation and string comparison by looking at two existing string comparison libraries before addressing the process of combining them into a single repository. I hope attendees will leave understanding the problem as well as the strengths, limitations, and possibilities of the new library and how it can be used to address the challenges of name disambiguation.
AUDIENCE:
Beginner to intermediate programmers.

This also allows us to focus on the competition at hand and not on the competition of parties involved. With that said we have a lot of motivational candy to enrage your rabid sense of competition.
Judge Panel:
-FlyingShoe - HaloCustoms
-PsychoDuck - THFE
-Warholic - ForgeHub
Prizes:
-1st Place: Halo Edition Astro A50 Wireless Headset
-2nd Place: Elgato HD60 Capture Device
-3rd Place: 1 Year Xbox Live Gold Subscription
-In addition to the prizes listed above, each winner will have an announcement video commentated by PsychoDuck from the Halo Forge Epidemic to showcase your amazing creation!
Settings and Modes
-Squad CTF is a 5v5 capture the flag based game mode allowing both 'one flag' and 'neutral flag' to the traditional setup. This will give designers the freedom to create for a variety of game modes eliminating any preconceptions of favoritism to symmetrical vs asymmetrical design philosophies.
Maps should be designed for one or more of the following modes:
-Squad Multi Flag CTF
-Squad One Flag CTF
-Squad Neutral Flag CTF
Squad settings can be downloaded from the ForgeHub LIVE file share and include the following settings:
-110% movement speed
-50% damage resistance
-75% damage modifier
-Carbine primary
-Magnum secondary
-Radar
-5 second flag recovery
-30 second flag reset
-Flag at home to score (multi flag only)
Deadlines and Details
-Maps must have been created on or after Thursday, May 7 2015
-Maps must be submitted by Saturday, August 15 2015 by 11:59 pm EST
-Maps must be posted in either the HaloCustoms or the ForgeHub map database and submitted to the respective site's submission thread
-Co-forging is allowed, but collaborators will need to select one person to receive the prize
-Multiple submissions per person are allowed
-Maps submitted early may be edited and re-submitted prior to the submission deadline
-Maps created by members of the staff of TheHaloForgeEpidemic, HaloCustoms, or ForgeHub who are not taking part in judging the contest are not eligible to place in the top three but may still achieve runner-up status
Judging Criteria and Process
-Maps will be judged by the panel consisting of @WARHOLIC, @Flying Shoe ILR, and @Psychoduck
-The judges will host and participate in testing lobbies throughout the event and provide feedback for map authors
-Maps will be tested with squad settings at the 5v5 player count
-Maps will be judged on how well they play for their primary gametype at the 5v5 player count
-Criteria include originality, replayability, performance, level of depth and enjoyment of gameplay experience, and level of interaction between infantry and vehicles
-Maps do not need to support more than one gametype
-The judging panel reserves the right to make tweaks to a map's spawn, objective, or weapon setup

Once the search is over, the degree of each vertex is calculated. The synsets for "drink" and "milk" with the highest degree are selected as the correct ones.
