Being Frank & Honest About Climate Change with Climate Scientist Kevin Anderson
In our third interview with climate scientist Kevin Anderson, we will cover why climate scientists need to be more frank and honest about emissions scenarios, why the rich cutting their emissions is key to staying below 2ºC of warming, the need for solar geo-engineering, COP29, and other subjects.
Kevin Anderson holds the Zennström professorship at Uppsala University and is chair of energy and climate change at the School of Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil Engineering (MACE) at the University of Manchester. He has been Deputy and Interim Director of the Tyndall Centre. He is a non-executive director of Greenstone Carbon Management. Welcome to ClimateGenn. I recorded this interview with Professor Kevin Anderson via Zoom from Baku in the last days of COP29. Kevin provides some critical insights into how the headlines we often see reported breakdown from a numerical standpoint.

Climate scientist Kevin Anderson warns: Only 4 years left to stay below 1.5°C without urgent action
Professor Kevin Anderson, a renowned climate scientist, offers an unfiltered look at the harsh reality of our climate crisis. According to him, at current emission rates:
🌎 For 1.5°C of warming, we have just 4 years before we exhaust the carbon budget.
🌎 For 2.0°C of warming, we have 14 years.
To stay within these limits, global emissions would need to be reduced drastically:
🌏 To achieve 1.5°C, we'd need to cut emissions by 19% annually.
🌏 To achieve 2.0°C, the reduction would need to be 7% annually.
These figures represent the global average, but in the context of climate justice, developed nations like those with historical, high emissions should act more swiftly than developing nations.

Welcome to ClimateGenn. I recorded this interview with Professor Kevin Anderson via Zoom from Baku in the last days of COP29. Kevin provides some critical insights into how the headlines we often see reported breakdown from a numerical standpoint.
Although the COPs remain an important component of our overall global diplomatic approach to this complex existential problem, there are no signals that the promise of the Paris Agreement will be kept by the nations who repeatedly pledge to hold to it.
So what do we do? Here Kevin offers a range of his insights. With the clock ticking, and human greed still in charge of the agenda, our collective agency and actions matter much more than we can ever imagine.

However, Anderson points out that this remains "wishful thinking" as long as we prioritize economic growth, expand airports, invest in carbon capture, and ignore the problems with gas power. Without true climate leadership, the window for meaningful change continues to shrink.
