Modernists - Kent Records KENT 505 (Unwrapped)
http://www.acerecords.co.uk/modernists
After two successful CD volumes, Kent’s look at the sort of R&B and club soul that could have been danced to by the original mods – if only they’d had the chance – arrives with a special vinyl edition.
For a group of hip kids who like to be ahead of the crowd, it is interesting to note that the preferred listening medium of today’s mods is still vinyl. Our “Modernists” and “Modernism” CDs were widely acclaimed by those who had heard too many Hot 100 sounds and were ready to dig some rarer grooves. Especially for them, here’s a new vinyl edition, featuring newfound staples from Bessie Banks, Bob & Earl and Mel Williams, the latter of whom likens the aspiring youth of 1966 to a T-Bird. Little Johnny Hamilton’s hip ‘Go’ instrumental was previously only...

Following our recent 2CD overview of Flair’s R&B releases and two double CDs embracing the RPM label’s output, we’re temporarily skipping over the parent Modern label to turn a spotlight on Kent, which replaced the Bihari Brothers’ earlier imprints in 1958 and outlasted them by several years. “Unlock The Lock: The Kent Story, Volume 1” covers the first four years of the label’s life. The Bihari brothers, owners of Los Angeles’ Kent and Modern labels, knew their black music, signing artists of the calibre of Etta James, Jesse Belvin and Jimmy Witherspoon in the 50s. Their travels to New Orleans, Memphis and elsewhere saw them expand their horizons, recording acts in those locales or licensing in material for release. Caravan - 1rd, 3rd album (UK)
Caravan are an English progressive rock band from the Canterbury area, formed in early 1968 from the ashes of the legendary Wilde Flowers. All four original members of Caravan (David Sinclair, Richard Sinclair, Pye Hastings, and Richard Coughlan) were, at one time or another, in that band. "Caravan" was however a big change in terms of musical direction, blending psychedelic rock, jazz, and classical influences to create a distinctive sound. They are considered a key part of the Canterbury scene of progressive rock acts, although they have never achieved the great commercial success that was widely predicted for them at the beginning of their career.
The band were originally based in Whitstable, Kent, near Canterbury, but moved to London when briefly signed t...

Little Johnny Hamilton’s hip ‘Go’ instrumental was previously only available to kids with a few hundred to spill on its northern soul flip, and Troy Dodds’ sublime ‘The Real Thing’ had been hiding under the expensive ‘Try My Love’, while Clarence Daniels & Obie Jessie’s Oscar Brown Jr-influenced ‘Hard Working Girl’ has only just come to light as an incredibly rare vinyl artefact. Similarly, although Philly’s Swan imprint was known to the record collecting cognoscenti of the UK’s 60s scene, Leroy Harris’ mean and moody ‘I’m Gonna Get You’ somehow escaped their attention.
Mod was always an international movement. While British soul fans went off in search of faster beats, their French and Belgian counterparts continued with the cool on the popcorn scene. This is epitomised by Hank Jacobs’ ‘East Side’, a fabulous piano-led instrumental from one of LA’s finest. It was big inLos Angeleson release, inAntwerpin the later 60s, and has since returned home to the low rider scene of recent years.
Unissued in any format until recent years, ultra-hip jazzer Floyd White’s ‘Another Child Lost’, Teddy Reynolds’ mid-60s soul groove ‘Ain’t That Soul’ and R&B vocal group the Corvairs’ ‘A Feeling Deep Inside’ are perfect for mods of any vintage. Enterprising mod DJ Lee Miller picked up on an unissued at the time 1963 recording called ‘Sundown’ by the Merced Blue notes from an Ace CD. He had an acetate made up to play out at gigs, renaming the song and artist to heighten the mystery. Having created a demand, only then did he come clean. These and Chuck Higgins’ take on ‘All Around The World’ are enjoying their first vinyl outings here.

The first four years of the Bihari brothers’ last major imprint. 30 of the tracks or takes make their CD debut.
The story is told, wherever possible, by previously unreissued material and previously unreleased alternate takes of familiar repertoire. Considerably more than half of what’s here falls into those categories.
Of the generous helping of B.B. King tracks included, most of them adds to his discography by means of alternate takes and mono single mixes that have not yet found their way onto an Ace CD. B.B. was the mainstay of the release schedule, from its incorporation through to the early 70s, but he was by no means all there was to Kent. There’s a wide variety on offer here – everything from doo wop and rockabilly to straight ahead R&B and proto soul.
Although B.B. left Kent in late 1961 (save for the contractual obligation session in 1964 that brought him back to cut ‘Rock Me Baby’) the Biharis filled his position as their flagship artist with successful 45s by his peer Lowell Fulson and upcoming blues-tinged Texan soul man Arzell “Z.Z.” Hill. Hear them and many others in the not too distant future on “The Kent Records Story, Volume 2”.

In the soul era the Other Brothers fromTexas, Jeanette Jones and Wally Cox from the Bay Area, and the Memphis-recorded Earl Wright fit that pattern.
Wally Cox’s group ballad ‘I Need A Love’ was scheduled to be issued in 1971 but didn’t make it to wax. Other group vocals include a hard-to-find update of Marvin & Johnny’s ‘Cherry Pie’ by Lord Charles & the Prophets, the Other Brothers’ ‘It’s Been A Long Time Baby’ and the exquisite harmonies of the Windjammers’ ‘All That Shines Is Not Gold’. Johnny Copeland’s ‘I Was Born To Love You’ is a mid-paced dancer omitted from his Kent CD, while Jeanette Jones gives a raunchy treatment to Ruby Winters’ ‘I Want Action’, which like the southern soul-influenced ‘Tear My Love Down’ by Wayne Boykin was never issued.
The Pace-Setters’ ‘Push On Jesse Jackson’, a combination of politics and harmony vocals over a psychofunk rhythm, is here in the full five minutes-plus vocal take for the first time. ‘You Saved Me From Destruction’ by Difosco (aka Dee Ervin/Big Dee Irwin) is another “out there” cut. Also from that late 60s experimental era for black music, the Robert Ramsey and Larry Sanders tracks are spacey numbers, both on CD for the first time. Willie Gauff’s ‘I Know She’s Gonna Leave’ on the other hand is so crazed and intense it’s taken 30 years to pluck up the courage to release it.
Other unissueds include a take on Mary Love’s ‘Move A Little Closer’ by jazz singer Millie Foster and Felice Taylor’s version of the Glories’ ‘Sing Me A Love Song’, which is all Diana Ross-inspired sensuality with a lush production. We end with ‘Your Gonna Miss Your Chance’, a rare gospel 45 from a Compton Baptist church. Maurine Williams’ haunting vocals produced goosebumps on this hard-bitten compiler.

A vinyl-only release drawn from the Modern and Kent labels of Los Angeles.
Black music collectors have revered the output of the Modern and Kent labels since the early days of B.B. King, the Ikettes and Ike & Tina Turner. Much of the soul was crossed with R&B – witness the tracks here by Z.Z. Hill, Vernon Garrett and Johnny Copeland. Garrett’s ‘Shine It On’ has become much in-demand in recent years, as has Z.Z. Mel Williams’ storming ‘Can It Be Me’ is also on the tough side – it has been a dancefloor filler since its discovery in the early 70s, and like Jimmy Bee’s manic ‘Wanting You’ it is taken from recently found master tapes for even better clarity.
Access to the tapes revealed male duo Gene & Gary’s version of the classic Danny Monday dancer ‘Baby Without You’, and ‘Get To Steppin’’, a Jackie Day track recorded in a very similar vein to ‘Naughty Boy’, her Phelectron rarity. Johnny Copeland made a great version of ‘No Puppy Love’ (as released by Jackie Paine on Jetstream), while the totally unknown Peggy Woods contributed a classic soul-girl stomper on ‘Love Is Gonna Get You’. The originally unreleased version of Wally Cox’s ‘This Man Wants You’ was recorded before his 1970 Wand release, although it sounds earlier.
Group soul comes from Brilliant Korners’ rare and collectable ‘Three Lonely Guys’, while the Other Brothers from Texas left ‘Nobody But Me’, their best recording, on the tape shelf – it has grown continuously in popularity since its 1995 debut. There’s a Mary Love classic and a great Arthur Wright instrumental version of her ‘Lay This Burden Down’ to round off a compelling compilation.

Hill’s cover of Bettye Swann’s ‘Make Me Yours’. Larry Davis’ name was largely unknown until his ‘I’ve Been Hurt So Many Times’ got Northern Soul plays in the 80s and onwards.

The band were originally based in Whitstable, Kent, near Canterbury, but moved to London when briefly signed to Verve Records. After being dropped by Verve, the band signed to Decca Records, where they released their most critically acclaimed album, "In the Land of Grey and Pink", in 1971. Dave Sinclair left after the album's release and was replaced on keyboards, but the group split up the following year. Hastings and Coughlan however, recruited new members, notably viola player Geoffrey Richardson, and continued touring and recording albums regularly despite more line-up changes that even saw original members David Sinclair and Richard Sinclair coming back and leaving again. They split in 1982 after a series of albums in pop vein, which left listeners wondering if this was still the same band who had released the landmark early-1970's albums...
The band was inactive for most of the 1980s, apart from three sporadic live appearances in 1983 and 1984. But in 1990 Caravan was asked to play a one-off reunion concert under its original form (plus Jimmy Hastings), for a TV show screened by Central TV (“Bedrock” special). This was the start of the resumed activity of the band, who continued touring and recording in the 1990s, with again, the core trio of Hastings, Coughlan and Richardson, and other more or less regular members.
The band stopped and reformed several times in the following decades, and Caravan still remain active as a live band in the 21st century, despite Coughlan's death in December 2013.

RELEASE DETAILS
Bobby Martin - Tightrope (Instrumental)
Appears on: Kent CD Album - Dancing 'Til Dawn (Various Artists)
Catalogue ID: CDKEND 106 - Track No: 21
Released: February 1994
Country: UK
Genre: Northern Soul
Label: Kent
Format: CD
COMMENTS & FURTHER INFORMATION
Instrumental version of Tightrope by Inez and Charlie Foxx on Dynamo Records. Recorded by Bobby Martin on 19th July 1968 at Groove Sound Studios, reportedly. (See Ace/Kent Records information below). Unissued as a 45rpm. It is featured on the Kent Records CD album 'Dancing 'Til Dawn'
Compiled by Ady Croasdell (Harboro Horace), Dancing Til Dawn is a 25 track selection mixing old Northern Soul favourites from the Scepter-Wand catalogue with current hits and one unreleased gem. Slowies like Eartha Kitt's There Comes A Time rub shoulders with Mel Wynn's '60s fuzzbox guitar work on the growling Stop Sign and there is Tommy Hunt's 1962 version of the Adderley classic Work Song as well as the incredibly rare instrumental by The Camps of Ashford & Simpsons's Marching (a massive disc at Wigan when instrumentals were all the thing). The album is not afraid to have an opinion about the Northern scene and ranges across the changing tastes over the years There are tracks from the days of dancing in a circle (the Esquires' Get On Up) and even some records that fell out of favour (through not being rare enough), among them Nella Dodds Come Back Baby and The Charts 1966 remake of their earlier doowop classic Desiree. As an added bonus, the Jack Montgomery track is taken from a master tape rather than a disc dub (something of a first).
NOTE: The Kent 'Dancing 'Til Dawn' album was originally released on a 16 track mono vinyl album (ref Kent Records - KENT 026) in 1984, but did not include the Bobby Martin track 'Tightrope' (instrumental) track. The 1994 CD release contained 25 tracks, and included the instrumental track featured here. (TRACK 21)
