A review of our accommodations and a tour of Kenmare town, county Kerry, Ireland
We rented a lovely 2 bedroom Air BnB. A residence above a shop on the main street of Kenmare. Kenmare is less touristic than Killarney or Clifton. It has a great and affordable 18 hole golf course. The pubs have more locals and Irish visitors . In general I found this town to be a great home base . There is also ample hiking in the region .

The town of Kenmare is ideally situated on two famous tourist trails – The Ring of Kerry and The Ring of Beara. The Ring of Kerry is known all over the world and follows the spectacular coastline of the Iveragh Peninsula. It's one of the most dramatic scenic drives in Ireland and makes a most enjoyable day tour. Along the 175 kilometre route are picturesque towns and villages, like Sneem, Caherdaniel and Cahirciveen, an abundance of historical landmarks, sandy coves and beautiful beaches.
Just south of Kenmare is the unspoilt and less commercialised Ring of Beara. This is less well-known than The Ring of Kerry but no less impressive. Its rugged beauty is beyond compare, traffic is minimal and there's a wealth of archaeological sites and spectacular views waiting to be discovered.
To the north of Kenmare is the Killarney National Park – 10,000 hectares of woodland, magical mountain scenery and of course the infamous Lakes of Killarney. These, you'll encounter from above, as you travel the Kenmare/Killarney Road and the staggering beauty of it all will take your breath away.
Not only is Kenmare a unique and desirable tourist destination in its own right with its rural beauty, style and service, but it's a perfectly-positioned base from which to experience everything that the south west of Ireland has to offer. Whether it's walking, cruising on the bay, fishing, golfing, touring or just 'chilling' that interests you, come and do all those things and more here in Kenmare.

Welcome, dear wanderers, to a humble corner of the Emerald Isle – Kenmare, in the enchanting County Kerry, Ireland. As the morning sun peeks over the rolling hills of County Kerry, the charming town of Kenmare stirs to life. Known as 'The Jewel on The Ring of Kerry', its beauty is matched only by its vibrant local culture. Here, every Wednesday, a vibrant spectacle bursts into life - Market Day in Kenmare, a tradition that dates back to 1670.
Market Day is a weekly tradition that defines the rhythm of Kenmare. As dawn breaks, the serene town square starts buzzing with the anticipation of the spectacle about to unfold. As the morning air fills with the inviting smell of fresh bread and brewed coffee, the stalls start to take shape.
Vendors set up their stalls, carefully displaying fresh produce, locally sourced, artisanal food products, and an array of handmade crafts. Marvel at the creative spirit of Kenmare in the myriad handicrafts - unique jewelry, woolen knits, hand-woven baskets – each carrying the artisan's unique touch.
From homemade jams and cheeses, to hand-knit woolen items, the spirit of local craftsmanship is alive and thriving in every corner. From home-baked goods, freshly-caught fish to hand-crafted gifts, every stall has a tale to tell, a slice of the Kenmare community brought to life.
Then, the magic truly begins. The people of Kenmare, and visitors from far and wide, arrive - drawn by the heady mix of colors, scents and sounds. Market Day is more than a shopping trip; it's a social event, a place where friends meet, where news is exchanged, where the community bonds. As the day unfolds, lively chatter fills the air. Friendships are rekindled, deals are struck, laughter echoes, and the air brims with camaraderie.
Feast your senses on the bounty of the region, fresh bread still warm from the oven, ripe fruits, and handmade chocolates, each a testament to the love and care of the makers. Feel the pride of the local farmers as they present their organic harvest. Taste the freshness of the Kenmare soil in every bite of apple, every cherry tomato. Savour the gastronomic delights - from farmhouse cheeses to traditional Irish stews, each stall tempts your taste buds, a culinary journey through Kenmare's rich food heritage.
And what's a market day without a bit of music? The vibrant notes of traditional Irish tunes fill the air, setting feet tapping and hearts fluttering. Feel the rhythm of Kenmare, as buskers fill the air with music, their melodies a soundtrack to this vibrant spectacle.
Look around and you’ll see the true beauty of Kenmare. It's not just the stunning landscapes, but the infectious warmth and cheer of its people. In Kenmare, every Market Day is not just a day - it's an experience, a way of life. It's the spirit of community... the spirit of Ireland.
As the sun sets, the echoes of laughter and lively banter linger. The market packs up, only to return next week, carrying forward a centuries-old tradition. So next time you find yourself in the heart of County Kerry, remember, Wednesdays in Kenmare hold a special charm. Experience the vibrant tapestry of life at Market Day.
