The Story Of Hong Kong’s Kai Tak Airport
Hong Kong was settled long before aircraft and air travel existed. Nestled comfortably between the South China Sea and the hilly terrain of the Chinese coastline, Hong Kong was already a densely populated area before airports were a foundational aspect of large urban centers. Before its current airport on Chek Lap Kok island, there was Kai Tak. With its runway given the nickname “Kai Tak Heart Attack”, the airport was well known among pilots and passengers for its hair raising approach.

Plane Spotters Kai Tak Hong Kong Airport 1998
A look at Kai Tak Airport and how airplanes must make a breathtaking approach or take-off over Hong Kong's Kowloon City . This report also examines how this unique aspect of Hong Kong's airport has drawn plane spotters from around the world to flock to the famous "Checkerboard Hill". It also catches up with an international airline pilot who says he'll miss the approach and take-off from Kai Tak Airport once it shuts down and moves to Chek Lap Kok on Lantau Island.

(5 Jul 1998) Cant/Eng/Nat
Kai Tak airport in Hong Kong - famous for its roof-skimming approaches - has seen its last planes take off and land after 73 years of operation.
There was an impromptu celebration by thousands of local people who took their children and cameras along for a final nostalgic look at the airport.
Fittingly, the airport's last flights were a departure for Britain - Hong Kong's former colonial ruler - and an arrival from China - the territory's new master.
The airport is being replaced by the larger and more modern 20 (b) billion U-S dollar Chek Lap Kok Airport.
Coming in to land -- the last commercial plane to arrive at Hong Kong's Kai Tak airport.
Appropriately, it came from China - now the ruler of the former British colony.
This Dragon Air flight touched down just before midnight local time on Sunday (1547 GMT).
Passengers aboard the final flight were given bottles of champagne and commemorative medals from China's Civil Aviation Department.
They said there were cheers on board as it landed.
There were mixed feelings about Kai Tak ending more than 70 years as Hong Kong's main airport -- one of the busiest in the world.
Sorrow for the old airport, but optimism and some pride for the massive new airport at Chek Lap Kok.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"Sad about Kai Tak being closed down, happy about a very big airport that's going to be open at Chek Lap Kok, and I'll be proud in this historic moment."
SUPER CAPTION: Milky Wong, Flight Attendant
SOUNDBITE: (French)
"It's quite sad that this is the last flight. I'm sure that the new airport will be just as good, if not better than the old."
SUPER CAPTION: Jean Mitchell, Passenger on last flight into Kai Tak
SOUNDBITE: (Cantonese)
"Very happy and very touched."
SUPER CAPTION: Ms. Kwan, Passenger on last flight into Kai Tak
Although the new and more modern Chek Lap Kok is a welcome change from the small and congested Kai Tak airport, it is much further away.
SOUNDBITE: (Cantonese)
"This airport is very convenient. Before I took a taxi here. It was very fast, taking only 15 minutes, but if you go to Chek Lap Kok, you need to allow about one hour's time to travel."
SUPER CAPTION: Mr. Yeung, Passenger on last flight into Kai Tak
Hours before the final flights, a massive operation was already well underway to move equipment 30 kilometres (22 miles) to the new airport.
And just as there had to be a final arrival, there had to be a final departure.
That historic journey went to this Cathay Pacific jumbo jet - the territory's official carrier.
And, perhaps fittingly, the flight's destination is Britain - Hong Kong's former colonial ruler.
It left for London at two minutes past midnight on Monday (1602GMT Sunday), bringing Kai Tak's history to a close.

And, perhaps fittingly, the flight's destination is Britain - Hong Kong's former colonial ruler.
It left for London at two minutes past midnight on Monday (1602GMT Sunday), bringing Kai Tak's history to a close.
