Kahun Medical Papyrus I Ancient Egyptian Medicine
The Kahun Medical Papyrus also known as the Gynaecological Papyrus, is the oldest medical text recorded. Dates to 1700-1850 BCE. OLDER than the Bible, this text shows how Hippocrates was not the first to take a scientific approach to healthcare. There is mention of human organs, blood pressure, surgical assistance, and how to care for women during pregnancy.

Ancient Egyptian Medicine - The Mind | History Documentary
Egyptian medicine was famous throughout the ancient world and in this history documentary I explore 4000 year old medical papyri to find out what the Egyptians themselves believed and wrote about mental illness and how to treat it.
Some modern psychiatrists have suggested there are clear descriptions of depression, schizophrenia and dementia in the Book of the Heart. I evaluate these claims by examining all of the available translations.
I also discuss The dialogue between a man and his ba or soul - a powerful story of despair in a time of change and The Kahun Papyrus which is said to include early descriptions of hysteria.
This is a companion to my other documentary - Ancient Egyptian Medicine - in which I explore the rich ...

History of Medicine
• The ancient Egyptians had an elaborate medical system that was initially built on magical traditions, but later became more scientific. The Edwin Smith Papyrus (3000 B.C.) and the Kahun Gynecological Papyrus (1800 B.C.) are two of the oldest known medical books. Peseshet was the first known woman doctor. She oversaw a school for women midwives in addition to her duties as a doctor.

• The Greeks also had an advanced medical system. Doctors today still agree to follow the Hippocratic Oath, developed by Hippocrates, a doctor in ancient Greece. The Hippocratic Oath says that a doctor will first do no harm to a patient.
• In Babylonia, early doctors were also skilled at diagnosing illness and providing treatments, usually in the forms of herbal medicines. The Babylonians used logical rules and reasoning in their observations of the human body.
• Ayurveda, meaning “the complete knowledge for a long life” began in ancient India. Doctors there believed that the human body contains all the elements — fire, water, earth, and air. When these elements became imbalanced, ill health followed.
• Modern Chinese medicine, which still relies on acupuncture and herbal remedies, developed thousands of years ago.
• During the Middle Ages, medicine in Europe was rather primitive. Doctors believed illness was caused by foul air or bad blood. Doctors placed leeches on people to remove some of their blood. Unfortunately, this treatment, which continued for several hundred years, often caused more harm than good.
• The Renaissance marked a time of increased learning. Medical schools in Italy trained doctors and nurses. Catholic hospitals treated the poor.
• From the 1600s to the early 1800s, medical care progressed slowly. In Britain, few trained doctors existed. Instead, amateurs who understood how to use herbs provided care. There were also charlatans, people who pretended to be doctors to get money.
• During the 1800s, several doctors introduced the idea of germ theory.Microscopes allowed them to study bacteria like never before. Doctors began to understand that illness is often caused by germs, not from a lack of balance or from bad air. This advancement changed everything.
• Today, modern medicine combines previous knowledge with new learning. Doctors consider herbal treatments, when appropriate, but can also use cutting edge equipment and medicine to heal patients. Thanks for watching!! Please LIKE, COMMENT, and SHARE. :)

In honour of my cousin becoming pregnant, here are some ways that ancient people used to avoid bringing new life into this world while still doing the no pants dance whenever they liked! (Don't get me wrong, I love children and am very happy for my cousin!!) Let's talk about ancient birth control for Valentine's Day, shall we?!

○ Ancient Toilet Paper - https://youtu.be/5sC7FSVm0Vg
○ Was King Tut's Curse Real? https://youtu.be/K9fvv8ekvBc
Starting off with Ancient Egypt, we’ve got some interesting options. Amazingly, we have two separate papyri that talk about contraceptives and such from this era. The most famous one is the Kahun Gynecological Papyrus dating from 1850 BCE. There’s another medical papyrus called the Ebers Papyrus dating from around 1550 BCE and both this and the Kahun Papyrus mention making a pessary out of a mix of acacia fruit, honey and sometimes ground up dates. We have a lot of written evidence for contraceptives from ancient Rome all thanks to a guy named Soranus. Born just before the second century CE, he could be considered antiquity’s foremost scholar on gynecology! Five of his suppository contraceptive recipes include pomegranate peel or rind… WHICH has been proven by modern science to affect fertility.
What seems to be a quite popular method is the use of Silphium. Silphium was a fennel-type plant that was native to north Africa that only grew on a small strip of land near Cyrene in modern day Libya. Silphium was used mostly for cooking and eating and such, and the documentation for contraception isn’t as well documented in comparison, but the effectiveness was probably exaggerated. But it may indeed have been used as an oral contraceptive in ancient Greece, Rome, Egypt and the ancient Near East and the hype for this plant was so sought after that it was worth more than its weight in silver by the first century AD and by late antiquity it was fully extinct.
