The Chocolate Kiddies w. Johnny Dunn and Jake Green - Holland 1933
Alto saxophonist Lex van Spall and drummer Bobby 't Sas led a band called "The Chocolate Kiddies" in Holland in the early 1930's. For this film they had guest artists Johnny Dunn, the famous American trumpeter who also recorded with his own band and with Jelly Roll Morton in the 20's, and trombonist Jake Green who also recorded with Bessie Smith. The tenorsaxophonist is Jascha Trabsky who later had a famous record shop in The Hague where we jazz-lovers used to meet on Saturday mornings and look through the piles of 78's.

"I Promised Not To Holler, But Hey! Hey!" - FoxTrot
Written by: Johnny Dunn
Recorded October 30th, 1923
Columbia Phonograph Company Studios
1819 Broadway (Columbus Circle)
New York, New York
Record No. 13004-D
Matrix 81322
Here is a great tune written and performed by the king of pre-Armstrong jazz trumpet, Johnny Dunn. Originally from Memphis, Dunn cut his chops playing in the Salvation Army band, and then with W.C.Handy's Orchestra until finally ending up in New York in the late 10s. He made a name for himself after he recorded with Mamie Smith, and signed an exclusive contract with Columbia Records, backing singer Edith Wilson, and taking his Jazz Hounds with him. They cut several fantastic examples of early syncopated jazz, often cited as part of the "rag-a-jazz" school of playing. Dunn's playing, while clipped and very precise, is still very hot and at times even swings a little. His breaks on "I Promised Not To Holler" are a prime example of this, though one can also see the limitations of his approach.
After 1924, Dunn made it over to England to be part of the "Black Birds Review" of 1926, taking the 2nd trumpet chair of the Pike Davies Orchestra (Davies is famous for his contribution to Ellington's recording of "I'm Gonna Hang Around My Sugar"), and cutting a few sides with that band, again for Columbia, under the pseudonym 'The Plantation Orchestra', which are great in and of themselves.
In 1927 he returned to the States and cut a few sides with Jelly Roll Morton and James P. Johnson (once AGAIN for Columbia), but decided he would find better work in back Europe and was there once again by the end of the decade. He joined the fantastic Chocolate Dandies review (a hold over from the Sam Wooding troupe of the same name), and played throughout the continent for the rest of the decade before passing away in Paris in 1937 due to Tuberculosis, alone and nearly forgotten.
Dunn, and a lot of other pre-Armstrong Harlem trumpet players are often overlooked today because their playing is seen as stiff, but its important not to forget their huge contribution to Jazz. They helped set New York as a center for black entertainment, and without that prestige, its unlikely that Armstrong would've chosen it as a stomping ground in 1924-25. Also musicians like Dunn and Thomas Morris were fantastic in their own right and it is my belief at least that they should be checked out for their own contributions to early jazz.
Please enjoy this fantastic Pre-Armstrong New York Black Jazz!
