John Cohen (born September 21, 1966) is the head baseball coach of Mississippi State. He played college baseball at Mississippi State (1988-1990) after spending a single season at Birmingham Southern College in Alabama (1986). He also played on the 1990 College World Series team his senior year at Mississippi State. He then spent two years in the Minnesota Twins farm system (1990-1991). He served as an assistant coach at the University of Missouri from 1992-97 before moving to Northwestern State University from 1998–2001, where he won two conference championships. He moved onto the University of Florida for two seasons (2002-2003) as an assistant before accepting the head coaching job at the University of Kentucky. On June 6, 2008, Cohen was announced as the head coach of his alma mater, Mississippi State. Originally from Tuscaloosa, Alabama, Cohen is one of a handful of Jewish college baseball coaches in the country.
John Cohen (born August 2, 1932, in Queens, New York) is a founding member of the New Lost City Ramblers as well as a musicologist, photographer and filmmaker of note. Some of his best known images document the Abstract Expressionist scene centered on New York's Cedar Bar; gallery happenings by early performance artists; young Bob Dylan's arrival in New York; Beat Generation writers during the filming of Robert Frank and Alfred Leslie's film Pull My Daisy; and the "old time" musicians of Appalachia. (The title of Cohen's 1962 film, High Lonesome Sound, has become synonymous with that music.) He has been one of the most important "discoverers" of traditional musicians and singers, finding and recording Dillard Chandler, Roscoe Holcomb, and many banjo players, most notably on the album High Atmosphere.
Beyond the United States, Cohen traveled extensively to Peru, driven by a fascination for the weaving and lifestyle of the native Andean population. His field recording of a Peruvian wedding song is included on the Voyager Golden Record, attached to the Voyager spacecraft.
John Jacob Cohen (20 December 1859 – 25 March 1939) was an Australian politician.
He was born in Grafton to storekeepr Samuel Cohen and Rosetta Manser. He attended Ullamarra Public School and Grafton Grammar School and then Calder House in Redfern. He received a Bachelor of Arts with first-class honours in mathematics from the University of Sydney in 1879 and a Master of Arts in 1881. Having also studied architecture at night school, he moved to Mackay in Queensland in 1882 as a consulting engineer and architect, subsequently moving to Brisbane in 1884. He married Bertie Hollander on 12 March 1889; they would have two sons. Cohen returned to Sydney in 1892 and was called to the bar in 1894. In 1898 he was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly as the National Federal member for Petersham, but by 1901 he was re-elected as a Liberal. A backbencher for most of his career, he was elected Speaker in 1917. In 1919, he resigned from parliament to become a District Court judge, allegedly as part of a deal between William Holman and the Liberals that had led to the Nationalist government in 1917. Cohen remained on the District Court until 1929. He died in Woollahra in 1939.
