Born in Seneca, Ohio, Cook attended common schools as a child, studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1867, commencing practice in Newton, Iowa. He was judge of the sixth judicial district of Iowa in 1878.
In 1880 Cook won the Democratic Party and Greenback Party nominations for the U.S. House seat in Iowa's 6th congressional district. After a very close general election race against Republican Marsena E. Cutts, Iowa's State Board of Canvassers concluded that Cutts had won 106 more votes. This enabled Cutts to be sworn in in 1881 and to initially serve as a congressman, as Cook pursued a contest of the election with the Republican-controlled U.S. House in the 47th United States Congress. A commissioner took evidence regarding the contest in Oskaloosa, Iowa in the Spring of 1882, but the House Committee on Elections had not announced a decision by the date that the seat was again up for election in November 1882 (when Cutts undisputedly won a plurality of votes). It was not until February 1883, in the waning days of Cutts' first term, that the Committee issued its recommendation - an 8-2 vote that Cook, not Cutts, won the 1880 election. The House accepted this recommendation in time for Cook to serve only a single day of the term, on March 3, 1883, and to collect his salary.
John Caldwell Calhoun (March 18, 1782– March 31, 1850) was an American politician and political theorist during the first half of the 19th century. Hailing from South Carolina, Calhoun began his political career as a nationalist, modernizer, and proponent of a strong national government and protective tariffs. After 1830, his views shifted and he became a greater proponent of states' rights, limited government, nullification and free trade, as he saw these means as the only way to preserve the Union. He is known for his intense and original defense of slavery as a positive good, his distrust of majoritarianism, and for leading the South toward secession from the Union.
Calhoun served as a member of the House of Representatives and Senate, as the seventhVice President of the United States, and as secretary of war and state. He usually affiliated with the Democrats, but flirted with the Whig Party. As a "war hawk", he strongly supported the War of 1812 to defend American honor against Britain. As Secretary of War under President James Monroe, he reorganized and modernized the War Department. He ran for president in 1824, but decided to run for vice-president instead early in the election, and won; serving under John Quincy Adams. He also continued his term under Andrew Jackson, who defeated Adams for re-election. However, Calhoun had a difficult relationship with Jackson due to the Nullification Crisis and Peggy Eaton Affair. Calhoun resigned in 1832, and entered the Senate. Calhoun was the first of two vice-presidents to resign, and the second and last vice-president to have served under two presidents, after George Clinton. As John Tyler's Secretary of State, Calhoun sought the Democratic nomination for the presidency in 1844, but lost to surprise nominee James K. Polk.
John Calhoun (April 14, 1808 – February 20, 1859) was an American publisher and politician from New York. Originally a student of carpentry, Calhoun learned the publishing trade in his hometown of Watertown, New York. After hearing about Chicago from a local, he moved there in 1833. Calhoun established the first paper in Chicago, the Chicago Democrat, which was first issued on November 26, 1833. Calhoun held a monopoly on the trade in Chicago until 1835; the next year he sold it to Long John Wentworth. Later in his life, Calhoun served a number of city and county political positions, including a seat on the Chicago City Council.
Biography
John Calhoun was born in Watertown, New York, on April 14, 1808. He apprenticed as a carpenter, his father's profession. When he was sixteen, Calhoun took a job in the printing office of W. Woodward, who had just founded the Watertown Freeman. Over the next five years, Calhoun learned the printing trade. When he was twenty-one, Calhoun left for Albany to work for the Starr & Little type foundry, then left weeks later for Troy, before returning to his position with the Watertown Freeman. In the summer of 1831, Calhoun established his own printing office in partnership with Woodward. Perley Keyes convinced Calhoun to expand the operation, and the Watertown Eagle was founded. However, it provided too much of a financial challenger for Calhoun, and it was sold to Alvin Hunt, who ran it for many years.
The 22-year-old ballplayer made his major league debut on June 27, 1902 and played in his final game on September 18 of that year. In 20 games (64 at-bats), he hit .156 with two doubles, one triple and eight RBI.
His minor league career lasted considerably longer. He spent 12 seasons in the minors, hitting .254 in 1,314 games. Perhaps his best season was in 1904 with the Haverhill Hustlers - that season, he hit .314 in 118 games.
Calhoun also managed in the minor leagues for eight seasons. He first the Jersey City Skeeters in 1909, replacing Gene McCann and being replaced by Jack Ryan. His next managerial assignment was in 1911 with the Elmira Colonels, with whom he managed until 1912. From 1913 to 1916, he headed the Binghamton Bingoes, leading them to league championships in 1913 and 1915. He last managed the Wilkes-Barre Barons in 1917, leading them to a league championship as well.
