The Great Lakes Storm of 1913, historically referred to as the "Big Blow," the "Freshwater Fury," or the "White Hurricane," was a blizzard with hurricane-force winds that devastated the Great Lakes Basin in the Midwestern United States and the Canadian province of Ontario from November 7 through November 10, 1913. The storm was most powerful on November 9, battering and overturning ships on four of the five Great Lakes, particularly Lake Huron. Deceptive lulls in the storm and the slow pace of weather reports contributed to the storm's destructiveness.
The deadliest and most destructive natural disaster ever to hit the lakes, the Great Lakes Storm killed more than 250people, destroyed 19 ships, and stranded 19 others. The financial loss in vessels alone was nearly US $5million (or about $119,714,000 in today's dollars). This included about $1million at current value in lost cargo totalling about 68,300tons, such as coal, iron ore, and grain.
The storm, an extratropical cyclone, originated as the convergence of two major storm fronts, fueled by the lakes' relatively warm waters—a seasonal process called a "November gale". It produced 90mph (145km/h) wind gusts, waves over 35feet (11m) high, and whiteoutsnowsqualls. Analysis of the storm and its impact on humans, engineering structures, and the landscape led to better forecasting and faster responses to storm warnings, stronger construction (especially of marine vessels), and improved preparedness.
The White Hurricane: The Great Lakes Storm of 1913
The White Hurricane left a trail of death and destruction in its path, claiming the lives of some 250 sailors. To this day, it remains the deadliest natural disaster to ever occur on the Great Lakes.

The Great Lakes Storm of 1913, also known as the White Hurricane sank 12 freighters. The worst of the storm hit Lake Huron and generated winds that exceeded 90 miles per hour and waves of over 35 feet. These conditions made survival almost impossible for even the largest vessels and many of those that didn't sink grounded in the storm, ironically saving them in most cases. SS Henry B. Hawgood and SS Howard M. Hanna Jr. were two of the lucky ones who narrowly survived the storm of the century.

The Great Lakes Hurricane of 1913 was one of the worst November storms to hit the area on record. Over the course of the blizzard, 12 ships were lost with all hands, and dozens more were stranded. The stories of the SS Charles S. Price launched in 1910, and the SS Regina, launched in 1907, two victims of the hurricane, somehow became entwined in a mystery that baffled the area at the time and still leaves unanswered questions today.

I've created this video to share my observations so others can enjoy and contemplate.
