James Samuel "Jimmy Jam" Harris III (born June 6, 1959) and Terry Steven Lewis (born November 24, 1956) are an American R&B songwriting and record production team. They have enjoyed great success since the 1980s with various artists, most notably Janet Jackson. They have written 31 top ten hits in the UK and 41 in the US.
History
Jimmy Jam is the son of Cornbread Harris, a Minneapolis blues and jazz musician. Jimmy Jam met Lewis while in high school in Minneapolis. They did not meet in class, however, but while attending a TRIO Upward Bound program on the University of Minnesota campus. They formed a band called Flyte Tyme, which evolved into The Time. In 1981, they were joined by Morris Day and toured with Prince as his opening act. As members of The Time, they recorded three of the group's four albums (The Time, What Time Is It? and Pandemonium). The first two albums are said to have shaped early 1980s R&B music (featuring "Cool," "Get It Up," "The Walk," "777-9311," and "Gigolos Get Lonely Too").
A lewis (sometimes called a lewisson) is one of a category of lifting devices used by stonemasons to lift large stones into place with a crane, chain block, or winch. It is inserted into a specially prepared hole, or seating, in the top of a stone, directly above its centre of mass. It works by applying principles of the lever and utilises the weight of the stone to act on the long lever-arms which in turn results in a very high reaction force and friction where the short lever-arms make contact with the stone inside the hole and thereby prevents slipping.
Etymology
The name lewis may come from the Latinlevo -avi, -atum meaning to levitate or lift, but the Oxford English Dictionary Online states, "the formation and the phonology are not easily explained on this hypothesis", preferring "origin obscure", and speculating that the term may derive from a personal name. The Romans used the lewis. The specially shaped hole that is shaped to fit the device is known as a lewis hole. Lewis holes in the uppermost masonry coursings are neatly repaired with matching indented plugs after the stone has been set in place.
Lewis is a crater on the far side of the Moon. It lies along the western edge of the Montes Cordillera mountains that surround the Mare Orientale impact basin. This crater has been heavily disrupted by the formation of the basin, and it is covered by ejecta from the impact leaving only an uneven depression in the surface. The outer rim is roughly circular, and the interior is uneven.

Minneapolis duo Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis recalled their formative years, working with Prince and Janet Jackson and revealed some of the secrets behind making hit records and staying relevant.
Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis are one of the greatest songwriting and producing duo in music history. Meeting on the same ’70s Minneapolis music scene that produced Prince, the pair formed the band Flyte Time, an outfit that would morph into the original line up of one of the most storied funk groups of the era, the Time.
By 1983 the duo had begun more actively pursuing songwriting and producing, commencing a series of essential R&B singles for the likes of the S.O.S Band, Cherrelle, Cheryl Lynn, Alexander O’Neal and others. In 1986 they began their now legendary association with Janet Jackson, producing the Grammy Award winning LP _Control_, the first of many career defining efforts over the next three decades. In addition, they have crafted classics for the likes of Force M.D.’s, Sounds of Blackness, New Edition, Human League, George Michael, Usher, and Mary J. Blige.

All of those songs are produced by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. The mix features Alexander O’Neal, he’s my favorite. Yes, I do know that many other wonderful songs are missed here but Jimmy and Terry have been produced tons of great songs, so I picked up them prioritizing the overall flow. Please enjoy anyway!

In this clip, Morris Day discussed Prince staking his claim as a pop
artist with the release of the album '1999' which dropped in 1982. He also talked about what led to Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis leaving the band.
The first two albums are said to have shaped early 1980s R&B music (featuring "Cool," "Get It Up," "The Walk," "777-9311," and "Gigolos Get Lonely Too").
... for Jackson’s “Off the Wall” LP, Jones drew on Temperton’s talents again for this perky disco-soul jam by the jazz guitarist turned adult-contemporary hitmaker ... Reid and Jimmy Jam and TerryLewis.
The final straw, they said, came when a song that none of the members liked appeared on the album instead of a song they worked on together with their longtime producers, Jimmy Jam and TerryLewis.
Janet Jackson has a cold ... At 19, Jackson finally wrested power away from her father, and decamped to Minneapolis with Prince’s old band members, Jimmy Jam and TerryLewis, to record what many fans consider her true first record, aptly titled Control ... .
The former Prince collaborator, known for being part of the Jimmy Jam and TerryLewis duo, asked Swensson for help in getting in touch with his father while he was in town for a recording session at Paisley Park.
... propelling local artists to new heights – is on the right path to repeat the success of Prince, Jimmy Jam and TerryLewis, The Jayhawks, and other Minneapolitans who gained global recognition.
