Jerash, the Gerasa of Antiquity (Ancient Greek: Γέρασα, Hebrew: גַ'רַש), is the capital and largest city of Jerash Governorate (محافظة جرش), which is situated in the north of Jordan, 48 kilometres (30mi) north of the capital Amman towards Syria. Jerash Governorate's geographical features vary from cold mountains to fertile valleys from 250 to 300 metres (820 to 980ft) above sea level, suitable for growing a wide variety of crops.
In the latter Ottoman period, the city of Jerash's name was abandoned and changed to Sakib, yet this was not a permanent development, as the name "Jerash" reappears in Ottoman tax registers by the end of 16th century.
A strong earthquake in 749 AD destroyed large parts of Jerash, while subsequent earthquakes along with the wars and turmoil contributed to additional destruction. Its destruction and ruins remained buried in the soil for hundreds of years until they were discovered by German OrientalistUlrich Jasper Seetzen in 1806. He began excavation and a return to life of the current Jerash by inhabitants of older villages. 70 years later, this was followed by the Muslim community, Circassians, who emigrated to Jordan from the Caucasus in 1878 after the Ottoman-Russian war. Subsequently a large community of people from Syria came to the area at the beginning of the 20th century.

Jerash, Jordan 🇯🇴 : Best Preserved Roman Ruins in the ENTIRE World!
Located an hour outside of Jordan's Capital of Amman lies the city of Jerash - home to the best preserved Roman Ruins outside of Italy! Today I am here to explore and learn about the history of this UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The site is home to beautiful temples, a victory arch, and a street lined with columns and homes which provides insight into what life was like many years ago. Much of what you see, however, is a reconstruction as the city was hit with a devastating earthquake which toppled most of the structures to the ground.
Even today, this place evokes so much emotion. Jerash shows us how advanced the Romans were and teaches us the history of that era. Join me today as I take you to explore the many temples, amphitheaters and more!

We spent the last 2 days on a road trip through Jordan exploring some of the most fascinating historical sites this country is home to. We had no idea the amount of incredible sites we would see on this trip, including: the ancient city of Jarash (most well-preserved city outside of Italy), Jesus's baptism site on the Jordan river (where we were about 20 feet away from Israel), Mt. Nebo (where God showed Moses the Promised Land), and SO MUCH MORE. Of course lots of delicious Jordanian food was involved. We ended the day at the Dead Sea where we will float tomorrow. :)

I took a 3 hour guided tour of Jerash which is located just north of Amman. It takes about 25 minutes by car to get there. I did not take a group tour but those options are available.
The city itself is much larger than you first imagine. The history is rich between the transfer of power from for example Greek to Roman, though the history extends before those influences.
The entrance fee was worth it and the guided tour cost me about 50 JD paid directly to the guide upon the end of the tour.
The guide was great! His name is Nader, educated in Canada and well spoken, knowledgeable and a pleasant person to be around. His phone number 00962797795656. Please check the time in Jordan before calling him.
Prepare to do a lot of walking, you can easily do 4-5 miles in the entire complex or just visit the hippodrome, the Roman center and the temple. It's up to you.
The weather in December was about 70F all day in the sun. Bring water and sunblock, sunglasses and hat.
You can also visit the ruins of a Templar castle 15 minutes away if you like that is situated on a big hill. More on that in a future video.

Jerash was founded during the Hellenistic period by veterans from Alexander the Great’s army. In 63 B.C., the city felt o Rome and became one of the most important cities in the Roman Empire. A large number of monuments survive.
Director: Jacques Vichet

Jerash is the Roman city you have never heard of. Nicknamed Pompeii of the east, Jerash is the most well preserved Roman city outside of Italy. Located just an hours drive outside of Amman, Jerash is a must while in Jordan.

Originally from Nashville, Tennessee, we got married June 2013 and quickly caught the travel bug! We started “travel hacking” & finally decided we wanted to travel for one year. After 2 years of saving $ and over 2 million miles and points, we sold our cars and apartment and left home January 10, 2016. We started this YouTube channel to share our experiences with friends and family, then decided we really liked vlogging and traveling! So we extended our 1 year trip to now FOUR years :) Now we have a goal of traveling to 100 countries before 2020! We are incredibly thankful to do something we love every day. :)

Many call Jerash, Jordan the most intact Roman ruins outside of Italy. Having seen many of the world’s best ruins, we would argue that it is one of the most amazing ancient ruins in the World. On our Jordan road trip, our first Jordan Travel vlog is on the ancient site of Jerash. This is one of the top destinations in Jordan.
