The annexation and incorporation of Taiwan into the Japanese Empire can be viewed as first steps in implementing their "Southern Expansion Doctrine" of the late 19th century. As Taiwan was Japan's first overseas colony, Japanese intentions were to turn the island into a showpiece "model colony". As a result, much effort was made to improve the island's economy, industry, public works and to change its culture for much of the necessities of the war machine of Japanese military aggression in the Asia-Pacific until the surrender of Japan.
Taiwan (historically called Formosa, from Portuguese: Ilha Formosa, "Beautiful Island", Portuguese pronunciation:[ˌiʎɐ fuɾˈmɔzɐ]) is an island in East Asia; it is located some 180 kilometres (112 miles) off the southeastern coast of mainland China across the Taiwan Strait. It has an area of 35,883km2 (13,855sqmi) and spans the Tropic of Cancer. The East China Sea lies to the north, the Philippine Sea to the east, the Luzon Strait directly to the south and the South China Sea to the southwest. Taiwan proper makes up 99% of the territory of the Free Area of Republic of China, after the ROC lost its mainland China territory in the Chinese Civil War and fled to the island in 1949, and the country itself is commonly referred to as simply "Taiwan".
Taiwan is a tilted fault block, characterized by the contrast between the eastern two-thirds, consisting mostly of five rugged mountain ranges parallel to the east coast, and the flat to gently rolling plains of the western third, where most of Taiwan's population reside. There are several peaks over 3,500m, the highest being Yu Shan at 3,952 metres (12,966ft), making Taiwan the world's fourth-highest island. The tectonic boundary that formed these ranges is still active, and the island experiences many earthquakes, a few of them highly destructive. There are also many active submarine volcanoes in the Taiwan Straits.

What Colonialism Did For Taiwan (& Japan)
In 1895, Japan acquired Taiwan island from the Qing Empire as their first colony. For the next fifty years, Japan occupied Taiwan - infusing it with their traditions, culture, and expertise.
The colonial legacy of the Japanese occupation period was deep and long lasting for both colonized and colonizer. In this video, we are going to talk about what happened during those fifty years. And what it did for both the Taiwanese and Japanese people.

Memorial Unveiled for Young Taiwanese Who Volunteered for Japan's War Effort | TaiwanPlus News
A new memorial in Kaohsiung, southern Taiwan, has been unveiled to remember the thousands of Taiwanese youths who volunteered to help the Japanese war effort during World War II. As a colony of Japan, Taiwan ended up on the losing side of the conflict and in the Republic of China era, their stories were largely forgotten. Only now is that beginning to change.

How Japan Nurtured Taiwan's Colonial Economy
Long time ago I was asked about the Japanese colonization of Taiwan. It's as with everything a complex topic but I found myself fascinated in the island's economic development and how the Japanese built up the government and economy. I focused today's video specifically on this - and I definitely acknowledge the history of racial suppression, brutal authoritarian rule and anti-insurgency.

By taking articles discussing Taiwanese experience in China and Japan during the war, as well as, adding a personal story of a Taiwanese who lived in Taiwan under Japanese occupation during this time, the book, Taiwan: Israel of the East explores the effects and changes that the war had on the Taiwanese, socially and politically. In China, the Taiwanese community and political organizations sought to unite under a more centralized front, known as the Alliance of Taiwanese Revolutionary Organization to help the Chinese combat the Japanese, as well as to influence the Nationalist Government on how to assist Taiwan and correctly govern the nation once the Chinese liberate it from Japanese control. The Alliance was not only a political movement, but also a military and intelligence movement. Each organization had its own espionage and guerilla tactics against the Japanese, as well as involvement in spreading propaganda to support their cause. The organizations were the Taiwanese Revolutionary League, Taiwan Volunteers, and Taiwan Party Headquarters.

Traveling far away creates distance—which is useful for critical philosophical thinking. Travelers are in a unique position to review the past, revise their outlook on life, and choose a direction for the future. Yin Hai-guang wrote his travelogues as a visiting scholar to the United States of America in 1955. They not only have a meaning as life reconstructions but they also implicitly criticize Taiwan under martial law. From the travel narratives that Yin published in different media, among them Free China自由中國and “Motherland Weekly” 祖國周刊, we find the use of space/travel as metaphor in the reconstruction of his life as a self-narrative—the shore of Lake Washington in Seattle, USA, for example, becomes a metaphor of longing for freedom. Reading Yin Hai-guang’s travel narratives, readers can learn about some of the rather existentialist questions posing themselves to the Taiwanese in this very special era of the Cold War.

Chinese missiles are dangerously flying over Taiwan, and China’s armed forces are conducting military exercises near the island. An exercise that could turn into a full-scale invasion by the army of communist China and result in a third world war for all mankind.
What was the history of China’s relations with Taiwan, and why did such tensions arise between the two countries?

The tension between China and Taiwan is at its highest. In China's eyes, Taiwan is a breakaway province that they need to reconquer. However, Taiwan sees itself as its own independent state from China. To prepare for a possible war, Taiwan is asking for help from his partners, including Australia.

Renowned romance novelist Chiung Yao has passed away at the age of 86. The author was found dead in her Tamsui residence on Tuesday afternoon, where she had taken her own life. Over the course of her decades-long career, the writer touched the lives of countless readers in the Chinese-speaking world, as well as dozens of actors that starred in the TV adaptations of her works. Fans and friends have taken to social media to share their memories with Chiung Yao and bid her farewell.

This is my final decision. My time has come and life will not get better than it is.
Smiling at the cameras, famed author Chiung Yao records her final public message. On Dec. 4, the writer was found dead in her residence in New Taipei’s Tamsui District, where she had taken her life. Her passing came as a shock to many.

Chiung Yao was the creator of the first dramas that Taiwan co-produced with China, “Four Loves” and “Three Flowers.” I have been very lucky to have worked with her and her husband, I’m thankful for the opportunities they gave me and I hope they are both happy together on the other side.
Many artists have mourned Chiung Yao’s death on social media, including Chinese actor Zhao Wei and Taiwanese actors Ruby Lin and Alec Su, all of whom who rose to fame after starring in “My Fair Princess.” Taiwanese actor Brigitte Lin says she will always remember her as a strong woman.

The news of her passing came at 1:22 p.m. Her husband’s lucky number was 22, so I think it’s a sign of the loving connection they had.
Police responded to Chiung Yao’s suicide at 1:22 in the afternoon, a number that author Chang Man-chuan says is symbolic for its ties to Chiung Yao’s late husband Ping Hsin-tao. Through their lives, the husband-and-wife duo established Crown Culture Corporation, a publishing house that worked with renowned writers such as Eileen Chang, Sanmao and Amy Cheung. Many of their works were adapted to television, starring more than 100 famous actors. In addition, Chiung Yao owned three film and television companies, with a value of some NT$3 billion.
Chiung Yao’s body has been taken to the Second Funeral Parlor in Taipei, and is due to be incinerated on Friday. She decided to not hold a public farewell ceremony, making for a quiet and tranquil end for the literary icon.

A look at the complex political situation on the island of Taiwan. The island of Taiwan is administered by the Republic of China, which lost the Chinese Civil War to the Communists which control the mainland to this day, proclaiming the People's Republic of China in 1949.
Both the ROC and the PRC claim to be the legitimate government of China. Taiwan is a de facto independent country but is not a member of the United Nations since being replaced in 1971 by the PRC.
The current situation is stuck in a stalemate with the two ways of resolving the dispute (unification and independence) both seeming very unlikely to happen any time soon.

Newest version of China’s Apple Maps shows ‘Taiwan Province’ over island of Taiwan|Taiwan News
An updated version of Apple Maps didn’t get much fanfare than usual in Taiwan, but across the Strait, Weibo’s top search result: Taiwan Province, became a hot topic. A peek inside China’s new version of Apple Maps shows what the commotion is all about: the words Taiwan Province are written over the island of Taiwan. And member of the public on both sides of the Strait were more than happy to share their views on this contentious issue.
On February 27, Weibo’s top search rankings had over three million results for a familiar yet controversial name: Taiwan Province. This contentious name’s rise to number one on the charts caught Taiwanese off-guard. A look inside the iPhone’s recently updated Apple Maps for China’s market shows what the fuss is all about: “Taiwan Province” is written over ...

Shark Fishery Images from Taiwan, Province of China Underline Global Threat | Pew
New images from a fishing port in Taiwan, Province of China underline the threat to sharks around the world. Fishermen kill up to 73 million sharks annually in order to satisfy the demand for shark fin soup. While the scale of the trade in Taiwan, Province of China is massive, globally it is just the fourth largest fisher of sharks, after Indonesia, India and Spain.

John Cena apologises for saying Taiwan is a country amid backlash
The Fast & Furious star and wrestler John Cena has apologised for calling Taiwan ‘a country’ in an interview he gave to a Taiwanese broadcaster this month.

‘I made a mistake. I love and respect Chinese people,’ Cena said to his 600,000 fans on his Chinese Weibo account. The controversy began when he told the Taiwanese broadcaster TVBS in Mandarin ‘Taiwan is the first country that can watch’ his latest film, Fast & Furious 9. China sees Taiwan as a part of its own territory, and rejects any reference to the self-governed island as an independent state.

Taiwan Province
Taiwan Province is one of the two administrative divisions of the Republic of China that are officially referred to as "provinces". The province covers approximately 69% of the actual-controlled territory of the ROC, with around 31% of the total population.
Geographically it covers the majority of the island of Taiwan as well as almost all of its surrounding islands, the largest of which are the Penghu archipelago, Green Island, Xiaoliuqiu Island and Orchid Island. Taiwan Province does not cover territories of the special municipalities of Kaohsiung, New Taipei, Taichung, Tainan, Taipei, and Taoyuan, all of which are located geographically within the main island of Taiwan. It also does not include the counties of Kinmen and Lienchiang, which are located alongside the southeast coast of mai...

Taiwan forces Qatar to remove Chinese province reference on FIFA World Cup identification card
Taiwan objected strongly to Qatar's move after it listed as a 'province of China' in an online application form ahead of this year's FIFA World Cup and forced it rectify the 'error'. This after the dropdown menu on the website to apply for Hayya card had showed 'Taiwan, Province of China'. The listing had angered Taiwanese officials who then requested organisers to change the name to 'Taiwan' following which Qatar rectified the 'error'. Watch this video to know more.

A look inside the iPhone’s recently updated Apple Maps for China’s market shows what the fuss is all about: “Taiwan Province” is written over the island of Taiwan.

I think this is just them getting excited over nothing. In the real world, it’s a simple matter that we don’t belong to them.
Member of public
Over there they have their own political reasons, so we can’t be too demanding because we don’t have any control over what they do.
Compared to flabbergasted Taiwanese, many Chinese internet users were so excited about the change that they posted comments online. One said the name should’ve been like this all along while another was happy to announce that the maps of AutoNavi Software and Baidu were updated to show Taiwan Province as well. But then some Chinese netizens took a self-mocking approach. One user pointed out that Apple is surely clever enough to have two different names for Taiwan: one within the Great Firewall and one outside of it. And another user reminded readers that in the virtual world he used to falsely claim that an entertainment star he had a crush on was his girlfriend. So, he believes Chinese are essentially lying to themselves.
Hong Kong citizen
At the end of the day China’s market is quite big, with many people having their investments there and people are doing business in China. So, sometimes you have no choice but to do what they want to do.
The data for Apple Maps is primarily provided by Dutch location technology company TomTom. But China’s government policy has put restrictions into place, which has resulted in Apple Maps having two data suppliers in the Chinese market: China’s own AutoNavi Software and Hong Kong’s MapKing. But in other countries Apple Maps still shows Taiwan, without the word “Province” alongside it. It seems that even in map software, there seems to be “one Taiwan with respective interpretations.”

It also does not include the counties of Kinmen and Lienchiang, which are located alongside the southeast coast of mainland China and administered as a separate Fujian Province.

This after the dropdown menu on the website to apply for Hayya card had showed 'Taiwan, Province of China'. The listing had angered Taiwanese officials who then requested organisers to change the name to 'Taiwan' following which Qatar rectified the 'error'. Watch this video to know more.

Taiwanese had faced the Second World War from many different angles, as Taiwan had been under Japanese occupation for around four decades when the Second Sino-Japanese War was starting up, which influenced the Taiwanese to be more supportive of Japanese cause.

Another angle represented were Taiwanese who supported the Chinese as many Taiwanese were living in China at the time after escaping the Japanese invasion and displayed heavy anti-Japanese sentiments.

Taiwan has been colonized multiple times, by the Dutch, the Chinese and the Japanese. Some colonizers, such as the Japanese, are remembered more fondly than others. Bing Wang looks at why.

Description: Taiwan Lecture Series Lecture 4: Reconstructing Survival Mechanisms— Travel Narrations of Yin Hai-guang (1919-1969) and Wu Zhuo-liu (1900-1976) during the Martial Law Period
Speaker: LIN Shu-hui 林淑慧
21.5.2024
Taiwan isn’t just a small island in East Asia; it’s the potential flashpoint for World War III. In this video, we dive into why Taiwan has become the epicenter of a dangerous power struggle between the U.S. and China. From its history of colonization and conflict to its strategic importance in modern geopolitics, we’ll explore why both superpowers view Taiwan as non-negotiable. Is it about geography, honor, or global dominance?

Chiung Yao
Novelist
This is my final decision. My time has come and life will not get better than it is.
Smiling at the cameras, famed author Chiung Yao records her final public message. On Dec. 4, the writer was found dead in her residence in New Taipei’s Tamsui District, where she had taken her life. Her passing came as a shock to many.
Kao Chin Su-mei
Lawmaker (Independent)
Chang Man-chuan
Author

🥒 *ABOUT BEFRS:*
Hey, I’m Sonny! I’m from the US but I’ve been living in Asia for 10 years and started making food and travel videos to document my experiences. I travel to different parts of the world, hunting down and documenting the most unique food each country has to offer.
If you see any factual food errors in my videos, please feel free to politely let me know in the comments. I'm a huge fan of trying different, interesting foods in each country. My show is from a Western point of view, but more importantly, MY point of view. It is not meant to offend any person or culture.

A look inside the iPhone’s recently updated Apple Maps for China’s market shows what the fuss is all about: “Taiwan Province” is written over the island of Taiwan.
Member of public

New images from a fishing port in Taiwan, Province of China underline the threat to sharks around the world. Fishermen kill up to 73 million sharks annually in order to satisfy the demand for shark fin soup. While the scale of the trade in Taiwan, Province of China is massive, globally it is just the fourth largest fisher of sharks, after Indonesia, India and Spain.

It also does not include the counties of Kinmen and Lienchiang, which are located alongside the southeast coast of mainland China and administered as a separate Fujian Province.
